“What are you standing there for? Get out of the car,” Manager He urged, as if suddenly remembering something. “Don’t worry, I won’t tell your girlfriend.”
Chu Jinhan brushed his hand away. In the end, he didn’t give Manager He the courtesy he expected. “You go by yourself.”
“Tch, you kid—are you really that proper? Tell me, do you have something in your girlfriend’s hands holding you back? We’re just going for a foot bath, not hiring a prostitute! Is it really that serious?”
Chu Jinhan said, “I just don’t want to go.”
“You—” Manager He was about to say something when his phone suddenly rang.
He gave up on continuing the conversation with Chu Jinhan and took out his phone to answer the call.
After hearing what the person on the other end said, Manager He’s expression turned serious. “He’s looking for me?”
After a while, Manager He hung up and glanced at Chu Jinhan. “Forget it, no one’s going to bathe. Liu Maocai has come to the factory.”
Chu Jinhan said nothing and backed the car out.
The two returned to the factory and went straight to the conference room.
Through the glass door, they could see Liu Maocai slumped on the sofa like a giant melted ice cream.
His face looked unpleasant, as if he were ready to kill someone.
Manager He originally thought he had come to cause trouble. But the moment he pushed open the door, Liu Maocai’s expression magically changed into a broad smile.
He sat casually without standing up and said with a grin, “If I’d known you two had already gotten off work, I would’ve come tomorrow instead.”
Manager He and Chu Jinhan exchanged a glance, both unsure what Liu Maocai was up to.
Manager He laughed and said, “Mr. Liu, why didn’t you give us a heads-up? Sorry to have kept you waiting.”
“What brings you here today, Mr. Liu?” Manager He sat down on the sofa and began brewing tea.
Liu Maocai let out a long sigh. “Ah, there was a bit of a misunderstanding between me and your colleague Chu here. I came to smooth things over.”
Manager He paused and subconsciously looked at Chu Jinhan, his gaze seemingly asking what he had done to make Liu Maocai suddenly come to reconcile.
Chu Jinhan also glanced at Liu Maocai.
Coming back to his senses, Manager He smiled and said, “Mr. Liu, you’re too kind. Since it’s a misunderstanding, it’s good to clear things up.”
“Brother,” Liu Maocai continued leisurely, “about what I said earlier—that I wouldn’t rent out factory space to you guys—don’t take it seriously. That was just anger talking. The unit upstairs is still available; you can rent it as planned, and the price is negotiable.”
Alarm bells rang in Manager He’s mind. Is this guy up to something?
But on the surface, he could only keep smiling. “Mr. Liu, you’re really… too generous. With your word, I feel reassured. Come, come, have some tea!”
Liu Maocai also laughed and accepted the tea cup, the two of them appearing to get along harmoniously.
“We didn’t know each other before, but now we do. From here on, we’re friends. Tonight, it’s on me—I’ll treat you to drinks at Jinzun and consider this matter settled. How about it?”
“Ah, Mr. Liu, you’re too kind!” Manager He chuckled, his mind racing. “How could we let you spend the money? And today’s really not convenient—I’ve already arranged to meet a client with Xiao Chu tonight. How about next time? Next time it’s my treat, Mr. Liu.”
Liu Maocai didn’t insist. He chuckled twice and said, “Alright then, we’ll drink next time. I won’t disturb you from meeting your client.”
With that, he struggled to get up from the sofa, his body wobbling as he walked out.
Manager He quickly followed and escorted Liu Maocai to the elevator before returning.
He immediately called the property owner he had previously contacted to confirm. Unexpectedly, what Liu Maocai had said was true—the other party had indeed changed their mind and agreed to sign the contract again.
After hanging up, Manager He looked puzzled. “What exactly is that guy up to?”
Chu Jinhan pondered for a moment. “It should be someone above him who gave the order.”
Manager He was surprised. “Did you call Mr. Feng?”
“Not yet.” Chu Jinhan shook his head. “Maybe Mr. Feng heard something and wanted to protect his reputation. Or maybe there’s another reason—but aside from him, no one else can make Liu Maocai lower his head.”
Manager He let out an “oh,” and the weight in his heart eased slightly. “That’s good. It seems Mr. Feng is a reasonable man. Now we can relax.”
Chu Jinhan glanced at him. “Still, it’s better to stay cautious. His reconciliation on the surface might just be for show.”
“In the future, if anything happens at the factory, they can just say it has nothing to do with him.”
Seeing Manager He’s constipated expression, Chu Jinhan added, “Don’t overthink it. At least the factory space issue has been resolved. For the short term, he won’t dare make any big moves openly.”
Manager He sighed. “Sigh… it feels like there’s a knife hanging over my head. I don’t even feel like going for a foot bath anymore.”
Chu Jinhan’s gaze drifted toward the direction where Liu Maocai had disappeared, a hint of coldness flashing in his eyes.
“He won’t be arrogant for much longer.”
It was unclear whether he was speaking to himself or to Manager He.
Manager He noticed the intangible aura surrounding him and felt a slight unease in his heart.
——
Since they didn’t go to the dinner gathering, Chu Jinhan returned home relatively early that day.
It wasn’t even seven o’clock yet when he arrived.
He took out his key, opened the door, and as soon as he pushed it open, a slightly off-key, almost wailing singing voice came from inside.
“Among the vast sea of people, who has swallowed the poison of love~”
“When I loved you, you were penniless and studying hard in a cold window, when I left you…”
Song Yunfei stood on the sofa, wearing a pale yellow nightgown, holding a rolled-up paper tube like a megaphone, singing and swaying as she performed.
But before she could finish the song, her eyes met the man at the door.
Her face still carried an overly immersive, sorrowful expression, her waist curved into an S-shape, frozen in place.
The little dog at her feet also froze along with her, as if the world had hit pause.
With a soft “thud,” the paper tube in her hand fell to the ground. She quickly climbed down from the sofa, but in her panic, she ended up sitting back down on it.
“You… weren’t you at a dinner gathering? Why are you back so early?”
She had originally planned to watch TV, but the square dancing outside was so loud that even turning the TV volume to maximum couldn’t drown it out.
So, unable to beat it, she chose to join it—using the TV as a karaoke screen instead.
She had only sung two songs when Chu Jinhan came back!!!
After a brief silence, the corner of Chu Jinhan’s mouth twitched slightly, suppressing a faint smile.
“It was canceled.” He said calmly as he closed the door and bent down to change his shoes.
Song Yunfei’s lips moved slightly as she looked off to the side in utter despair. She hugged her knees with both hands, feeling completely at a loss, wishing she could find a hole to hide in.
Chu Jinhan walked over, bent down to pick up the paper tube she had dropped, and placed it on the table. “Continue.”
Then he turned and walked toward the kitchen, presumably to get some water.
!!!
This was the first time since transmigrating that Song Yunfei had ever disliked him!
This person was just too evil.
She would never enjoy singing again in her life.
Grabbing the remote control, she turned off the TV—but somehow that only made things even more awkward.
Chu Jinhan walked out of the kitchen and asked her, “Have you eaten?”
Song Yunfei’s eyes darted around, looking very busy. “No… it’s still early, I’m not really hungry.”
Chu Jinhan said, “Then should I cook?”
“Anything is fine…”
“You said before that you’d help me check things. Today’s a good opportunity—help me see which steps I might be doing wrong.”
