A total of twenty contracts were laid out on the table. Li Miao didn’t even bother to look—she simply picked up a pen and swiftly signed her name.
Zhang Tao stood nearby. Each time Li Miao signed one, his excitement grew by a notch. He tried desperately to suppress the corners of his mouth, but they kept rising higher and higher.
Even as a manager, he had never sold so many units in a single deal.
Quarterly bonus, year-end bonus—this was now secured.
After signing the contracts, Li Miao took out a bank card from her bag and handed it to Zhang Tao.
She wasn’t paying in full; it was installment-based, but Zhang Tao would handle all of that.
After swiping the card, Zhang Tao told Song Yunfei to keep Li Miao company while he personally took the contracts to handle the formalities.
Song Yunfei looked at Li Miao with gratitude. “Miss Li, thank you.”
Li Miao smiled lightly. “Why are you thanking me? I buy houses, you sell houses—we’re just taking what we need. You don’t need to overthink it.”
Li Miao assumed Chu Jinhan had hidden his identity to flirt with a girl, and that Song Yunfei didn’t know who he really was.
That’s why she took this opportunity to build a connection with Song Yunfei. Rather than trying to curry favor with Chu Jinhan himself, it was more practical to maintain a good relationship with Song Yunfei.
Although Li Zhe was the deputy general manager of Huayue, he was still only a deputy. Among the shareholders, his stake was near the bottom, with very little decision-making power.
It was only in Qingcheng that their Li family had some standing.
Without this opportunity, they would normally not even have the chance to meet Chu Jinhan, let alone build any connection with him.
Moreover, Jinlong Real Estate itself was a Li family asset. Buying properties here was essentially moving money from one pocket to another, with minimal loss.
Otherwise, for over eight million yuan, Li Miao wouldn’t have spent it so casually without blinking—no matter how wealthy she was, she wouldn’t play around like that.
Even though Li Miao said this, Song Yunfei still felt very grateful. She had saved her from poverty.
“Miss Li, are you free tonight? Let me treat you to a meal.”
After a moment of hesitation, Li Miao politely declined. “Let’s do it another day. I really have something today. I’ll invite you when I’m free.”
Song Yunfei could tell she genuinely had something to do, so she didn’t insist. “Alright, then just let me know whenever you’re free.”
“Okay.” Li Miao’s eyes turned slightly as she casually asked, as if making small talk, “I noticed you and your boyfriend seem to have a good relationship. How long have you been together?”
Song Yunfei immediately became alert.
She carefully weighed her words in her mind while maintaining a calm smile on her face. “Not that long—about half a year.”
She definitely couldn’t use the childhood sweetheart story about Chu Jinhan. Since Li Miao knew his identity, she would likely have ways to find out about his disappearance.
If she said they had been childhood sweethearts and together for many years, wouldn’t that expose her immediately?
Li Miao let out a thoughtful “oh.” “I see. I really envy your relationship.”
She had only seen them once—how could she know their relationship was good?
Song Yunfei smiled. “I’m the one who should be envying you, Miss Li—you’re beautiful and so wealthy.”
Li Miao was amused by her words. The two chatted casually back and forth, like old friends who had known each other for years.
Soon, Zhang Tao finished handling all the formalities.
Li Miao also stood up to leave.
“I’ll see you out.”
Song Yunfei stood as well and personally escorted Li Miao out of the sales office.
After sending Li Miao off, Zhang Tao somehow appeared sneaking up beside her.
“Xiao Song.”
Song Yunfei was startled. She turned around and saw Zhang Tao’s ingratiating smile, instinctively taking a couple of steps back.
“Manager Zhang, what are you doing?”
Zhang Tao smiled and said, “Nothing, I just wanted to say you’ve worked hard. I’ll give you three days off—no, one week. Go rest well and don’t overwork yourself.”
Song Yunfei responded with an “oh.”
This guy really knew how to do favors on the fly. On the surface, he was giving her a week off, but in reality, he probably wanted to smooth things over with Liu Maocai and pretend he had already fired her.
“Then I’ll be leaving?”
Zhang Tao waved his hand, the smile on his face never fading. “Go on, go on. Be careful on the way.”
Song Yunfei left the sales office, got on a bus, and not long after, received the 4,000 yuan transferred by Zhang Tao.
When the contract was being signed earlier, she hadn’t received the money yet, so she didn’t feel particularly excited.
But this 4,000 yuan was real and tangible—her mood instantly improved.
She quickly called Chu Jinhan. In less than two seconds, he picked up—he really answered quickly.
“Hello.”
“Chu Jinhan, I’ve made some money! Come home early tonight—I’m going to celebrate properly. Is there anything you want to eat?”
From the phone came Chu Jinhan’s calm, emotionless voice. “Anything is fine.”
“Alright then, I’ll just buy whatever. Remember to come home early.”
“Okay.”
Song Yunfei didn’t continue to disturb him while he was at work. She got off at the market stop, where it was less crowded and the goods were more complete.
She bought a fish, two pounds of shrimp, and in a more extravagant mood, a pound of beef brisket and some ribs.
Chu Jinhan had just returned after sending those two clients to the airport.
Although he hadn’t secured a ten-million-yuan order, he had signed a two-million-yuan deal, marking their first cooperation attempt.
If there were no issues later on, more orders would likely follow.
Previously, Manager He had mentioned opening another workshop, and now that the contract was secured, he was also urging him to put that plan on the agenda.
From here on, he would only get busier.
Near the end of the workday, Manager He personally informed everyone that there would be a dinner gathering that evening.
Everyone in the office was happy—rarely was it not a meeting after work.
But at that moment, a cold voice suddenly rang out. “I won’t be going.”
Everyone turned toward that workstation. Chu Jinhan had already packed his things and was ready to leave.
The smile on Manager He’s face faded, and he said somewhat unhappily, “You kid, you skip every gathering. This time it’s a celebration for you—if you still don’t come, it really doesn’t make sense, does it?”
Chu Jinhan remained firm. “I’m not available today.”
Hu Yao glanced at him and said in a half-joking, half-sour tone, “He’s going back to keep his girlfriend company. If Manager He forces him to attend the dinner, aren’t you afraid his girlfriend will come to the company tomorrow?”
Manager He’s mouth twitched.
The others exchanged glances, their expressions subtle and varied.
Many in the office couldn’t understand it—how could someone who seemed so cold be so devoted in a relationship?
The strange part was that his girlfriend didn’t seem all that impressive either. Some even wondered if he had done something wrong and was being watched by his girlfriend.
Manager He sighed. “Then why not just bring her along?”
Chu Jinhan glanced coldly at Hu Yao, then withdrew his gaze and said to Manager He, “It has nothing to do with her. I really have something to attend to tonight.”
Since he had said so, it wasn’t like they could force him to go.
Manager He could only blame himself for not asking him earlier and decided to postpone it to the next day.
“Alright then, we’ll do it tomorrow. You’re not allowed to refuse again tomorrow!”
Chu Jinhan nodded slightly and left on his own.
He rode his electric scooter—with one broken rearview mirror—back to the rented apartment.
Pushing open the door, the aroma of food mixed with the cool air from the air conditioner hit him.
In the kitchen, under the dim warm light, a woman’s lively and busy figure could be seen. The dog Circle was circling around her feet, looking even busier than she was.
Outside the window, the night gradually deepened along with the city’s noise, while inside, there was warm lighting and the fragrance of home-cooked food.
The small rented apartment seemed, in that moment, to become the only place of peace in this unfamiliar world.
Hearing the movement outside, Song Yunfei poked her head out of the kitchen holding a spatula.
Seeing the man standing at the door, a bright smile spread across her face, her eyes curving into crescents. “You’re back quite early—I’m not done cooking yet.”
