Song Yunfei’s body trembled.
At this moment, the phrase “caught between a rock and a hard place” was fully embodied in her.
She instinctively tried to pull back, but there was no way to get down.
Her strength was also rapidly draining away. Her entire body went limp as she hung onto Chu Jinhan. If he hadn’t been holding her, she would have already slid to the floor.
Song Yunfei’s mind was in chaos—shame, panic, helplessness, and a hint of something she herself refused to acknowledge: immersion.
At moments like this, images of her own fate would uncontrollably surface in her mind.
She didn’t want to follow the original owner’s path. She didn’t want to become her. Her thoughts were in constant conflict.
She could only blame this damn man—he was too seductive!
Through the misty, watery blur of her vision, Chu Jinhan suddenly opened his eyes and met her dazed, uncertain gaze.
He gradually stopped the kiss, and after a moment, their lips simply rested quietly against each other.
After a long while, Chu Jinhan finally pulled away.
Song Yunfei’s back suddenly made contact with the sofa, and at the same time, a blanket was slipped between the two of them.
Only then did Chu Jinhan release her.
“The rat ran off. I’ll go check the drain,” he said in a slightly hoarse voice before turning and walking toward the bathroom.
Song Yunfei, her cheeks flushed red, leaned against the sofa, clutching the blanket as she watched his back disappear into the bathroom doorway.
It wasn’t until the dog Quanquan, whose fur was half-dry, jumped onto her lap that Song Yunfei snapped back to her senses. She pushed the dog aside, wrapped herself in the blanket, and went to the cabinet to get clothes.
She glanced again toward the bathroom.
From this angle, she could just see Chu Jinhan crouching on the floor, his hands fiddling with something inside the drain.
Song Yunfei’s mind was in turmoil, yet completely blank at the same time. She didn’t know what to do.
By instinct, she went to dry the dog’s fur. After drying it, she took a mop and cleaned the water off the floor.
Inside the bathroom, Chu Jinhan had already closed the door, and the sound of rushing water echoed within.
After a while, he came out wrapped in a bath towel.
Song Yunfei froze. She actually saw his upper body!?
In her memory, every time he finished showering, he would always be wearing pajamas.
This was the first time she had seen him come out wrapped only in a bath towel.
His hair tips were still dripping with water. Droplets trailed down his collarbone, slid across his chest and firm abdominal muscles, and finally disappeared into the edge of the white towel.
He casually dried his hair with a towel as he walked out.
When he looked up, he saw Song Yunfei standing there holding a mop, staring blankly at him.
Song Yunfei met his gaze for a moment, then quickly looked away again, pretending to be busy as she awkwardly mopped the entire room from top to bottom.
Chu Jinhan watched her for quite a while, then calmly continued drying his hair, as if it was no big deal.
After he finished blow-drying his hair and looked back, Song Yunfei was still pretending to mop the floor.
“Still not done?” he asked.
Song Yunfei jumped in surprise and looked up suddenly, only then realizing his hair was already dry.
She let out an awkward laugh. “It’s… it’s done. I just saw Quanquan shedding again, so I went over it a couple more times…”
She placed the mop back on the balcony and quickly ran back to the bed, preparing to sleep.
After a while, Chu Jinhan also came to the bedside.
Then he pulled her out of the blanket. “Your hair isn’t dry. Get up and dry it before sleeping.”
“……”
Song Yunfei grabbed the blanket back and wrapped herself up again. “It’s already dry!”
Chu Jinhan pinched a strand of her hair and gently rubbed it. “It’s not dry.”
Song Yunfei’s forehead twitched. She suddenly threw off the blanket and glared at him angrily. “You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?!”
She now seriously suspected that this man simply wanted to see her make a fool of herself.
Chu Jinhan showed no expression. He lowered his gaze and looked at her puffed-up cheeks, like an agitated squirrel.
He said calmly, “You got water on the bed.”
Song Yunfei’s lips twitched. For a moment, she was unable to refute him.
She had thought he was concerned about her, but it turned out he was worried about the bed getting wet.
After a moment of silence, Song Yunfei dejectedly sat up from the bed. Since she had already been embarrassed, she might as well not care anymore.
She wanted to reach for the hairdryer, but Chu Jinhan had already turned it on and was holding a section of her hair, beginning to blow-dry it for her.
Song Yunfei stiffened, not daring to move at all. She didn’t know where to look, so she lowered her gaze, staring at his clearly defined abdominal muscles.
“Move a little closer,” the man’s voice came from above her head.
Song Yunfei responded with an “oh” and scooted closer to him.
The sound of the hairdryer echoed through the room. Song Yunfei fidgeted with her fingers, her heart beating rapidly.
This was the first time someone had ever blown-dried her hair for her. The feeling was… somewhat indescribably strange.
After a while, she suddenly had a brain lapse and asked, “Why did you kiss me just now?”
The previous two times could be explained as Chu Jinhan thinking she was upset about them not sleeping together, so he took the initiative to comfort her.
But just now, she hadn’t said anything at all—he had initiated it himself.
After asking, Song Yunfei immediately bit her lip, feeling even more embarrassed.
The sound of the hairdryer stopped.
The room fell quiet, and Song Yunfei could almost hear her own heartbeat.
After a moment, the man’s calm voice came from above her head: “I’m a man.”
Song Yunfei instinctively looked up and met his steady, emotionless gaze. He seemed to be stating something completely normal.
It was an answer she should have expected, but after hearing it, her previously restless heart suddenly calmed down.
She couldn’t describe how she felt at that moment—she simply couldn’t put it into words.
“So, just because I’m a woman—if it were anyone else just now… you would have done the same?”
Chu Jinhan fell silent for a few seconds. As he watched the faint spark in her eyes extinguish, a hint of confusion flashed across his face as well.
He shook his head slightly. “No.”
“Because you are my girlfriend,” he said in his usual low, steady voice. “Why are you asking such a question?”
Hearing that, the tangled knots in Song Yunfei’s mind seemed to smooth out. She briefly froze, and what followed was embarrassment.
…She had almost forgotten that she was his girlfriend.
Between couples, what had just happened—kissing—seemed perfectly normal.
He was simply acting according to what a boyfriend should do, nothing inappropriate about it.
She tried to salvage a bit of her embarrassment. “Th-then why did you…”
Halfway through her sentence, Song Yunfei stopped herself.
Because she realized continuing this topic would be dangerous.
Chu Jinhan naturally understood the implication behind her unfinished words.
He casually unplugged the hairdryer and placed it on the bedside table before sitting down on the bed.
Looking at Song Yunfei, he said, “You’re not ready yet.”
Song Yunfei’s heart tightened. He had seen through that?
Chu Jinhan paused for a moment, then reached out to sweep her long hair behind her back. “Besides, our relationship isn’t stable yet. There’s no need to rush.”
Song Yunfei scratched her head, thinking to herself that not only was it unstable—this relationship of theirs was essentially a fragile building built on lies, with a bottomless abyss beneath it.
It would collapse sooner or later; it was only a matter of time.
The higher one climbed, the deeper one sank—and the harder the fall would be.
