On the surface, he said he didn’t object to her looking for a better option and that he could let go at any time without hesitation.

But from everything he had done, it wasn’t hard to see that even though he resisted the original owner in his heart, he was still doing everything he could to keep her.

It wasn’t that he was generous—rather, this was the only way he had.

He didn’t have the confidence to force her to stay, nor any reason to make her bear responsibility for his failed life.

Rather than saying he was trying to hold onto her, it was more accurate to say he was trying to preserve the meaning of his own existence.

Of course, this was all Song Yunfei’s speculation—but it likely wasn’t far off.

Song Yunfei sighed and stood up from the sofa.

She went to the kitchen to finish cooking.

By then, the laundry was almost done. She took out the clothes one by one, shook them out, and hung them on the balcony to dry.

Although she couldn’t tell him the truth for now, at the very least, she could let him see a clean home, smell the aroma of food, and feel a bit of genuine comfort when wearing clean clothes.

At that moment, Chu Jinhan returned.

When he opened the door and stepped inside, he saw a figure hanging clothes on the balcony.

The evening breeze drifted in, carrying the fresh scent of laundry detergent, mixed with the aroma of food from the kitchen, quietly wafting toward him.

The scene before him was completely different from the cluttered, slightly oppressive atmosphere he remembered from this rented room.

Song Yunfei seemed to hear the movement. After hanging up the last piece of clothing, she turned around and smiled at him.

“You’re back? Just in time—you can eat now. Go wash your hands.”

Chu Jinhan paused for a moment, then gave a soft “mm,” took the key out of the door, and walked inside.

His gaze swept across the room before finally settling on the woman in the kitchen.

She wore a loose off-white T-shirt with matching shorts. Her hair was casually tied into a bun on top of her head, with a few stray strands falling beside her neck.

She was busy carrying dishes and food out.

Muttering to herself, she said, “This air conditioner is amazing. It doesn’t even feel hot while cooking.”

“And the washing machine too. I won’t have to wash clothes by hand anymore. I’ll save a lot of time every day.”

Chu Jinhan watched her moving lips silently for a moment, then changed his shoes and went to wash his hands in the bathroom.

The air conditioner was on, and the usual stifling heat was gone.

Cool air mixed with the fragrance of food, creating an indescribable sense of peace.

The two sat at the table, which had two dishes and one soup: egg-stuffed tofu, cucumber stir-fried with ham, and cabbage tofu soup.

Song Yunfei handed him a pair of chopsticks and asked with a smile, “Where did you find so many discounted appliances?”

Chu Jinhan casually made an excuse, “There was a shop behind the factory that went out of business, so everything was on clearance.”

“Oh, I see. How much did you spend?”

“Three thousand. I used an advance on my salary from the boss.”

Song Yunfei didn’t probe further. She even gave him a thumbs-up. “You really know how to manage money. So will we still get your salary this month?”

“Yes. It won’t be paid next month.”

Song Yunfei nodded. “Then after dinner, we should properly plan next month’s expenses.”

Chu Jinhan glanced at her.

In the past, Song Yunfei wasn’t someone who would calculate these things. When she didn’t have enough money, she would borrow online loans herself. When she ran out of those, she would ask Chu Jinhan to take out loans.

She often said, “Spend when you need to spend. What’s there to be afraid of with a bit of debt? We’ll have plenty of money in the future anyway.”

Of course, Chu Jinhan would naturally not take out online loans—otherwise, the appliances would have been arranged long ago.

After dinner, Song Yunfei sat cross-legged on the sofa, holding a pen and notebook, starting to calculate their expenses.

Chu Jinhan sat beside her, helping her with the calculations.

The sound of the TV echoed throughout the room, but it didn’t interfere with their communication.

Song Yunfei asked him, “Are you still getting 3,500 this month?”

Chu Jinhan nodded. “Mm. The delivery job pays two thousand; it should all be in the card.”

“Alright, I’ll withdraw it another day.”

His salary card wasn’t linked to a phone, so whenever he needed to spend money, he had to go to the bank to withdraw it.

“So that makes 5,500 in total. I’ll leave you 1,000.”

Chu Jinhan said, “Five hundred is enough.”

Song Yunfei glanced at him. “Will five hundred be enough for you?”

Chu Jinhan nodded. “Enough.”

“Alright then. That leaves us with 5,000. After deducting 1,500 for rent and utilities, and about 2,000 for air conditioning, 1,000 for groceries, and 500 for occasional transportation and phone bills…”

Song Yunfei smiled. “We still have 1,500 left.”

Chu Jinhan thought for a moment. “Then let’s use that to get you two sets of clothes.”

Song Yunfei paused. “That reminds me—you’re going to start handling business now, right? You should get two suits.”

Chu Jinhan was about to say something, but Song Yunfei cut him off first. “You don’t need to worry about that. I’ll look online for you.”

Song Yunfei didn’t actually need to buy clothes—she already had plenty.

On the other hand, Chu Jinhan only had six sets of clothes in total, including sleepwear—three for summer and two for winter.

He kept rotating through the same few outfits, and his pants were already washed to the point of fading. On rainy winter days, he might not even have a change of clothes for a whole week.

If he weren’t the president of Yanjin Group, just an ordinary person, Song Yunfei would definitely cling to him no matter what.

That’s why they say good men are not in circulation—unless you happen to run into someone blind.

Of course, the same could be said for women.

After finishing the budget, Song Yunfei felt that in a place like this, as long as they didn’t spend recklessly, Chu Jinhan’s salary was more than enough to live on.

She put away her notebook and went to take a shower.

Since she hadn’t bathed the night before due to the burst water pipe, her whole body felt uncomfortable.

Chu Jinhan, meanwhile, picked up the notebook on the table and flipped through it. When he saw the handwriting, his brows furrowed slightly.

Although Song Yunfei didn’t write much, he had seen her handwriting a few times before, and it seemed somewhat different from what was on the page.

But too much time had passed, and he couldn’t immediately pinpoint the difference.

After showering, Song Yunfei came out feeling refreshed. With the air conditioner on, her mood had improved significantly.

At last, she wouldn’t be woken up in the middle of the night by the heat.

But…

“Brother Wang said he’s going to a big city. When is he leaving?”

Song Yunfei asked this at around 1 a.m., shortly after being woken up from a barely begun sleep, sounding utterly lifeless.

The man beside her didn’t respond at first, and she thought he had fallen asleep.

But a few seconds later, his voice came through: “He said next month.”

Song Yunfei reached for her phone, checked the time—it was the 28th. She still had three more days to endure.

She sighed and put her phone down.

A minute later, she sat up again. “Chu Jinhan, do you want to watch TV?”

After a brief pause, Chu Jinhan didn’t speak, but he sat up from the bed and turned on the bedside lamp.

Without exchanging words, the two got out of bed, walked to the sofa, and sat down to turn on the TV.

Song Yunfei held the remote and browsed through the channels—annoyingly, almost everything required a membership.

After searching for a while, she finally found a free cartoon called Big Ear Tutu.

She clicked on it with some frustration and turned up the volume, just enough to drown out the sounds from the other side.

Suddenly, a coat was draped over her shoulders.

Song Yunfei paused and turned to look at Chu Jinhan.

He said casually, “You just recovered from being sick. Don’t catch a chill again.”
