After saying that, the room fell silent again.

No one knew how long had passed—Song Yunfei even thought he had fallen asleep—but unexpectedly, he spoke again.

“Let go. Where are you going?”

Song Yunfei paused slightly and said in a low voice, “I’m going to get your medicine, fetch some water, and get a towel. I’ll be back quickly.”

After another ten or so seconds, she finally felt the strength holding her gradually loosen.

Song Yunfei supported him as he lay down. “Just lie down first. I’ll be right back.”

She turned on the bedside night light, and the dim yellow glow instantly illuminated the room.

Chu Jinhan seemed momentarily dazzled by the sudden light and raised a hand to shield his eyes.

Song Yunfei glanced at him, picked up the cup of water from the table, and stood up to leave.

There were still lunch dishes on the table, but after what he had done, Song Yunfei had lost all appetite.

She quickly fetched some water, grabbed a towel, and returned with the cup.

However, this guy had already sat up again.

Song Yunfei simply took out a thermometer, preparing to check his temperature first.

This time, before she could act, Chu Jinhan took the thermometer himself and placed it under his arm without hesitation.

“Take the medicine first.” Song Yunfei handed him the pills.

After he swallowed them, she handed him the water.

A few minutes later, Chu Jinhan took out the thermometer and looked at it himself first.

Song Yunfei leaned over to look. “No wonder you were talking nonsense—it’s gone up again.”

It was 39.8°C in the afternoon; now it was 39.9°C.

“Why don’t we—”

“No.”

“You… then I’ll call an ambulance?”

Chu Jinhan looked at her quietly. “I’ve already taken the medicine.”

Song Yunfei sighed helplessly. “But the fever hasn’t gone down.”

“It’ll go down soon.”

Song Yunfei took another deep breath, silently reminding herself: he’s sick, he’s sick.

She forced a smile. “Then let’s wait one more hour. If the fever still doesn’t go down, we’ll go to the hospital, okay?”

Chu Jinhan hesitated for a moment, staring at her concerned gaze, and eventually nodded.

Seeing that he had finally relented, Song Yunfei felt a wave of relief.

She took out her phone and set an alarm, then bent down, wrung out the towel from the basin, took his hand, and wiped it.

Then she unbuttoned his shirt and wiped his chest.

Chu Jinhan leaned against the headboard, quietly watching her.

She kept her eyes lowered, focused on what she was doing. The warm light cast across her profile, half of her face hidden in shadow.

It was as if two different versions of her were split apart.

She spent the most time wiping his chest—of course, because she was looking at his abs.

Living abs. Breathing abs.

Most of the time before, the lights were off, or she was busy with other things and had no time to look. There had never been an opportunity to observe so closely.

“Since we’ve already reached the middle of the mountain, we might as well go all the way to the top.”

Song Yunfei, who had been absorbed in admiring his abs, paused her movements upon hearing this.

She instinctively looked up at his eyes, and her entire face was suddenly fully exposed under the light.

“What?”

Chu Jinhan lowered his gaze, his eyes clearer than before.

“You asked that before.”

Song Yunfei froze for a moment before remembering—she had once asked him: if someone suddenly realizes they are halfway up a mountain, should they continue climbing or go back down?

Back then, his answer was only hypothetical.

But this time, it was firm and unquestionable.

Her breathing caught, and her heartbeat quickened along with it.

This didn’t sound like nonsense. At a time like this, suddenly bringing up such a question made it hard for Song Yunfei not to feel nervous.

“Why are you suddenly asking this? Did you—”

She wanted to ask if he had remembered something. But if she asked and he hadn’t actually remembered anything, wouldn’t she be exposing herself?

Chu Jinhan seemed to see through her hesitation and said slowly, “I’ve remembered a little.”

Song Yunfei’s voice trembled slightly. “A little… how much is ‘a little’?”

“I remember that I’ve seen you before.”

“W-where?”

“Seems like it was by the roadside… or maybe at a hospital. I can’t quite tell.”

Song Yunfei’s tense heart relaxed just a little. “I… is that so?”

If he said he hadn’t remembered anything at all, she would have been suspicious. After all, although what he said sounded like fragments of nonsense, every sentence made her heart skip a beat.

After a pause, Song Yunfei asked, “Do you have something you want to ask me?”

“Mm.”

She steeled herself again. “What is it?”

“Will you go up the mountain with me?”

“…”

She hadn’t prepared herself enough for that.

“Because only when you reach the top of the mountain can you clearly see the path you came from—and also know where you should go.”

Song Yunfei’s fingers, holding the towel, tightened bit by bit.

His words sent ripples through her heart.

Although she didn’t want to admit it, during this time she had many ways to leave—troublesome, but possible.

Yet she found herself making seemingly reasonable excuses to stay. Wasn’t it because she couldn’t bear to leave? Couldn’t bear to give up this stolen warmth during this limited time.

And she couldn’t bear to see his lonely expression, couldn’t bear for him to feel sad.

She had once believed that something like love was illusory and unreal—something that only existed online and would never happen to her.

Because she had never experienced it, she had indulged in it without restraint.

Song Yunfei lifted her head and smiled slightly. “Alright.”

The two looked at each other in silence. It was as if the invisible barrier between them had disappeared, and even the light in the room seemed brighter.

Chu Jinhan took her hand from his chest and pulled her closer.

His gaze slowly moved from her eyes, down past the tip of her delicate nose, and finally settled on her lips.

Before she realized it, the distance between them had become extremely close.

But just as they were about to touch, Chu Jinhan pulled back slightly and simply held her in his arms.

“I have a cold. I don’t want to infect you.”

Song Yunfei rested her cheek against his chest, which felt hotter than usual, listening to his heartbeat as she wrapped her arms around his waist.

They simply held each other quietly, yet time seemed to pass quickly.

The one-hour alarm she had set went off. Song Yunfei straightened up and picked up the thermometer.

She handed it to him, signaling him to take it himself.

Chu Jinhan took it and, as before, placed it under his arm without hesitation.

After five minutes, he took it out and checked it.

Song Yunfei also froze, looking at him in surprise—she even suspected for a moment that he might be faking it.

In one hour, the temperature had dropped to 38.5°C.

However, judging from his condition, he didn’t seem to be pretending.

Fortunately, the fever had gone down, so she no longer needed to worry. She stood up and said, “Since the fever’s gone, you should rest for a while. I’ll go heat up the food—you haven’t had lunch yet.”

“Mm.”

This person was truly strange—hungry one moment, and full the next.

Watching her leave, Chu Jinhan’s expression returned to its usual calm.

When a person is tangled in thoughts and cannot figure things out, the simplest solution is not to think at all—do whatever makes oneself feel better.

As for the future… when even the present is hard to manage, what is there to think about regarding the future?

It was like a starving beggar holding only a single bun—should he eat it now, or wait until he is dying to eat it?

Any beggar would choose the former.
