“What’s going on?” Bai Yu wanted to step closer, but he was a bit afraid of the dog that was eyeing him like a tiger, so he could only stand about a meter away.
Song Yunfei withdrew her gaze and wasn’t in the mood to talk to him. “Nothing.”
“Did Chu Jinhan bully you?”
Bai Yu persisted. He cautiously took a step forward, and Quanquan immediately jumped up. He silently stepped back again.
“No.”
After thinking for a moment, Bai Yu said, “Then… are you worried he’ll recover his memory?”
Song Yunfei remained silent—the answer was obvious.
What she was worried about wasn’t just that.
“Move your dog farther away.”
Song Yunfei glanced at him. “You deserved it. Who told you to take it to get neutered?”
Having been exposed, Bai Yu felt a bit embarrassed. He coughed lightly. “I was doing it for its own good, to prevent it from going out and causing trouble for other dogs.”
“I think you just wanted revenge!”
“Haha, am I that kind of person? Alright, move it farther away. I have something serious to discuss with you.”
Song Yunfei studied him suspiciously for a moment, then tied the leash to the chair and stood up, walking over to him.
“What do you want to say?”
Bai Yu sighed. “Of course it’s about Chu Jinhan. What else could it be?”
Song Yunfei fell silent.
“Someone will be coming for him soon. Do you have any plans?”
Song Yunfei was surprised. “How do you know that?”
Bai Yu smiled. “Don’t worry about how I know. First tell me what you’re thinking.”
Song Yunfei lowered her head. Her mind was a mess, unable to sort out any clear thoughts.
“I just feel… like he’s remembered something, but also like he hasn’t. And like you said, someone doesn’t want him to go back. If I leave, what about my parents?”
Bai Yu clicked his tongue, a hint of heaviness appearing on his face. “It’s troublesome… but not extremely so.”
“You have a way?”
“I do. Though I don’t really want to use it… but for you, I’ll have to.”
From his tone, Song Yunfei could roughly guess what he meant—he was probably referring to using his family’s connections.
She felt somewhat touched, but she didn’t want to owe him such a big favor.
“Bai Yu, thank you. But it’s not necessary. If it really comes to it… I’ll just turn myself in.”
Bai Yu froze for a moment—then surprisingly agreed. “I think that’s not a bad idea.”
Song Yunfei forced a wry smile, not knowing what to say.
Bai Yu laughed. “Alright, don’t be so pessimistic. When the people looking for him arrive, it won’t concern you anymore. What you should be thinking about now is when you plan to leave.”
Song Yunfei’s mood grew even heavier.
Seeing this, Bai Yu sighed softly, almost as if lamenting, “Looks like you’ve really fallen for him. You… why won’t you listen to advice?”
“When will the people looking for him arrive?”
“That’s hard to say. Maybe tomorrow, maybe the day after, maybe next month.”
“I understand.”
“And then?”
Song Yunfei fell silent again. Her silence made Bai Yu a little irritated.
But seeing her sorrowful expression, it eventually turned into a helpless sigh. “You… really are…”
He raised his hand and picked a fallen leaf off her shoulder. “Forget it. Let me know when you’ve made your decision.”
Bai Yu didn’t say anything more. Matters of the heart couldn’t be persuaded by outsiders.
Wasn’t he the same?
Knowing it was fake, yet still willingly deceiving himself.
He turned and got into the car by the roadside. Moments later, the black car disappeared from view.
Song Yunfei took Quanquan and returned home.
It was already getting dark. She pushed open the bedroom door, and the room was dimly lit.
Still, she could see the man leaning against the headboard. She didn’t turn on the light and quietly walked inside.
Reaching the bedside, she raised her hand and touched Chu Jinhan’s forehead.
The temperature was still high, though not as hot as it had been in the afternoon.
Before she could withdraw her hand, it was grasped by another warm hand.
Song Yunfei paused. “You weren’t asleep?”
“I couldn’t sleep.”
“What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”
The room fell silent for a few seconds before his slightly hoarse voice was heard.
“Yes.”
Song Yunfei sat down and asked softly, “Where does it hurt?”
“I don’t know.”
She frowned. What did he mean, he didn’t know?
“You don’t even know where it hurts?”
“I don’t know.”
Song Yunfei sighed. “Then let’s go to the hospital. I’ll drive you.”
Just as she was about to stand up, her wrist was suddenly tightened, and she was pulled forward by a strong force.
Her entire body fell into his chest.
The room grew even dimmer, to the point where their outlines were barely distinguishable.
His body temperature was very high. Through the thin fabric of his sleepwear, it burned against her cheek.
The sound of his heartbeat clearly reached her ears.
His large hand held hers, guiding her palm to press against the place where his heartbeat could be felt.
“Here.”
Song Yunfei couldn’t quite hear his voice clearly; what she felt more was the vibration from his chest.
Her palm resting against his chest, she paused. “It’s hurting here?”
“Then… you’re burning too badly. Could it be pneumonia? We should really go to the hospital!”
“…”
Chu Jinhan pulled her hand away, then wrapped his arms around her, resting his head on her shoulder.
His hot breath brushed against the hollow of her neck, making her shiver.
“Song Yunfei, can you distinguish between guilt and love?”
Her heart skipped a beat again. In his burning embrace, she instead felt a chill.
“Y-you… are you delirious from the fever? Why are you suddenly asking that?”
“Maybe.”
Song Yunfei became flustered. “Lie down and rest properly. I’ll go make something to eat—you haven’t had lunch yet.”
“Tell me another story.”
“What story?”
“A story about a little rabbit that likes to eat carrots.”
“…”
Song Yunfei finally confirmed it—he really was delirious from the fever.
This couldn’t be delayed any longer. She forcefully tried to pull his hand away. “Stop talking nonsense. I’m taking you to the hospital.”
He held her tightly. “I’m not going.”
“No, you must go. If you don’t, I’ll never talk to you again.”
“Can you tell the difference between a carrot and a white radish?”
“…Even a fool can tell the difference… I’m begging you, please go to the hospital. If you want to eat radish, I’ll go buy some and cook it for you, alright?”
Song Yunfei tried to reach out and turn on the light, but he grabbed her hand again.
She was truly helpless.
After a long while, Song Yunfei spoke again. “Alright, since you won’t go to the hospital, then lie down. I’ll help you wipe your body.”
Chu Jinhan seemed not to hear her and continued on his own, “Actually, you can tell just by taking a bite.”
“…You don’t even need to taste it to know.”
“Which means you can’t tell the difference.”
Song Yunfei sighed. “Fine, fine, I can’t tell the difference. Can you please let go of me first?”
She was genuinely a little frightened by him—his fever seemed far too severe.
But he still refused to move.
Song Yunfei reached out and gently stroked his face, speaking softly, “Can you let me go?”
