Those strikingly familiar words immediately pulled Tang Zhen’s memory back to the last time Ren Yanjing had gotten drunk.
She sat obediently, speaking softly, “Actually, you said the same thing last time.”
But every time she heard it, it felt different.
Tang Zhen couldn’t quite pinpoint what was different, but there was a sense of freshness, as if hearing it over and over still felt new.
Ren Yanjing leaned in slightly, a smile in his eyes. “Is that so? Looks like I repeated myself.”
Tang Zhen tilted her head back slightly. “Actually… it’s not completely the same.”
Ren Yanjing played along. “Then what did I say that day?”
Tang Zhen didn’t even need to think carefully to recall what had happened that day.
Every Cantonese word had been so profound that it was hard to forget.
She hesitated for a moment and said, “You asked if we could get back together.”
Ren Yanjing froze mid-movement, and even Tang Zhen and 111 noticed the shock, sadness, disbelief, and other complex emotions flashing across his face.
Tang Zhen couldn’t distinguish the other emotions.
In that brief moment, what had he been thinking?
“We… why did we…” break up. Just saying the word “break up” twice, Ren Yanjing tried to speak it but couldn’t say it easily.
Tang Zhen clasped her hands together nervously. “Are you very sad right now?”
Ren Yanjing admitted it plainly, “Yes.”
Even though he didn’t remember much, the thought that they had parted ways still made him sad.
Why did they have to separate?
Tang Zhen asked 111, “Santiao, after he sobers up, will Ren Yanjing remember this?”
111 replied, 【Zhen, probably not. Even if he does, it’ll only be a confused memory.】
Even without blacking out completely, one’s memory after being drunk can’t be as clear as when sober—it would definitely be hazy.
Taking advantage of the fact that Ren Yanjing was drunk and would likely have no memory of this later, Tang Zhen sat cross-legged on the bed, ready to have a proper conversation with him.
Her relationship with him had started because of a mission issued by 111.
Even their first meeting had been intentional.
Every initial encounter had been planned. As the supporting female lead, she needed to meet the male lead, interact with him, and follow the predetermined plot… entirely different from how the main male and female leads met.
The main leads were high school classmates, then university classmates; their meeting had been natural and inevitable.
Tang Zhen explained, “The surface reason was that I didn’t want to delay your exchange program abroad.”
“And the real reason?”
“The real reason is… you only belonged to me temporarily.”
Ren Yanjing asked, “Why do you say that?”
Tang Zhen placed her hands on her knees and spoke slowly, “Because you’re too outstanding. Top students should be with top students.”
“But I don’t like top students,” Ren Yanjing said, looking deeply at her. “I only like you.”
Tang Zhen bit her lip. “You don’t even remember me!” How could he still say he only liked her?
“Because my heartbeat doesn’t lie.”
He wasn’t someone who got easily moved, but every second after seeing her, his heart had been stirred.
Tang Zhen confessed outright, “I’m super calculating.”
“Our first meeting was intentional on my part.”
That day, reminded by 111, she waited along the male lead’s usual path. When she saw his back, she deliberately rode a shared bike past him. At that exact second, the wheels wobbled violently as if she were about to fall.
He reached out in time to help her.
And that was how they met.
Ren Yanjing sincerely praised her, “Baby, you’re amazing.”
If not for her scheming, their first encounter would never have happened.
She had been super calculating… and yet he praised her.
Tang Zhen was at a loss.
111 comforted her, 【Zhen, you already knew, the male lead likes calculating types.】
Tang Zhen pursed her lips. “I thought he wouldn’t like calculating types when drunk.”
111 said gravely, 【Seems the info was wrong. The male lead actually has always liked calculating types.】
Had she known, why even bother crafting a scheming persona for the supporting female lead?
No wonder the plot almost collapsed!
Ren Yanjing took Tang Zhen’s hand. “Baby, I guess we got back together later.”
And indeed, they did.
Tang Zhen asked curiously, “How do you know?”
Even drunk, he could no longer remember her clearly, yet he guessed so many things correctly—he really was clever.
Ren Yanjing’s memory was confused after drinking, but he knew himself well.
If it was her… he wouldn’t let go.
Tang Zhen glanced at the time. It was really late now, and she urged Ren Yanjing to sleep.
Shen Quanli had already removed Ren Yanjing’s suit jacket. He still wore his shirt, and whether or not there was a vest underneath, Tang Zhen couldn’t tell.
Ren Yanjing placed his hands on his shirt buttons and began unbuttoning slowly.
At first, Tang Zhen didn’t react… until 111 started screaming wildly in her head.
111: 【Zhen, this is the first time we’re seeing this perk!】
【The male lead is only wearing a shirt! Just a shirt! No vest! Ahhhh!】
Tang Zhen wanted 111 to stop repeating it, because she had already seen it.
Once she realized, her first instinct was to flail and stop Ren Yanjing.
Ren Yanjing’s hand was still on the third button of his shirt. He lifted his eyes to look at her. “Baby, what’s wrong?”
Tang Zhen turned her head away and said softly, “Ren Yanjing, you should sleep with your shirt on.”
“Why?” he asked, explaining, “Sleeping with a shirt on isn’t comfortable.”
Tang Zhen stammered, “Because… because we’re in a pure-love relationship.”
Even during the time they had lived together, Ren Yanjing had always been properly dressed in front of her, wearing just short sleeves.
But now… did he actually want to take off his shirt?
Ren Yanjing paused, slightly stunned.
He stopped moving and propped his hands on either side of her. “Baby, you lied to me.”
Tang Zhen: “???”
She looked at him blankly. “I lied to you about what?”
“You lied when you said we’re in a pure-love relationship.”
111: 【Zhen, what does the male lead mean by this? What does it mean?!】
【He seems… regretful?】
【Could it be… no way… actually…】
【Zhen, we haven’t been guessing wrong this whole time, have we?!】
Hadn’t it previously called the male lead a “pure-love war god”?
Turns out it was wishful thinking?!
Tang Zhen, embarrassed and annoyed, threw the blanket over Ren Yanjing. “Just sleep already!”
Ren Yanjing stretched his arms and pulled Tang Zhen into his embrace. “Baby, I’ll sleep holding you.”
Tang Zhen only hoped he would go to sleep quickly and not think about taking off his shirt, so she didn’t resist.
Sleep, sleep, just go to sleep.
Actually, Tang Zhen didn’t want to sleep herself. Shen Quanli and the others were guarding the door; they probably wouldn’t sleep tonight anyway, so she felt awkward going to bed.
But once Ren Yanjing held her in his arms, she fell asleep not long after.
The next morning, Tang Zhen woke up around nine o’clock. She had just opened her eyes when Ren Yanjing’s lips met hers.
“Good morning, wife.”
The familiar words instantly brought her back to the time when they were still living together.
Even after being apart for so long, Ren Yanjing had never forgotten this ritual.
Tang Zhen blinked and studied him. “You’re sober now?”
“Yes, sober.”
Tang Zhen continued, “And your memory isn’t confused anymore?”
Ren Yanjing answered every question seriously. “No, my memory isn’t confused.”
Satisfied that he was truly sober, Tang Zhen bit her lip and asked, “So… how much do you remember from last night?”
Ren Yanjing reached out to gently stroke her face. “I remember everything.”
Everything?
Everything!
Tang Zhen panicked. “Santiao!”
111 hurriedly said, 【Zhen, I didn’t expect this either!】
It didn’t know why the male lead remembered everything!
Tang Zhen realized that normal rules didn’t apply to him. Luckily, not much had actually happened last night.
She didn’t pursue the topic further, instead casually bringing up Zhang Mian and the others outside.
“Ren Yanjing, Zhang Mian and the others are still at the door…”
“I already told them to go rest in their rooms.” They should all be asleep by now.
“Ah? Oh.” Tang Zhen didn’t know what to say.
She thought carefully for a moment.
Luckily, she hadn’t said much last night in front of Ren Yanjing, so she probably hadn’t said anything wrong.
Thinking that way, she felt a little more justified and confident.
When she got up to go to the bathroom, Ren Yanjing called after her.
“Tang Zhen.”
Here we go again.
He called her by her full name.
Tang Zhen thought, “Whether I go or not, it’s the same,” and sat back down on the bed, asking in a soft voice, “What is it?”
Ren Yanjing looked at her and said slowly, “You said something wrong before.”
Something wrong?
She had said a lot while he was drunk—what was he referring to?
“You said before that I would only belong to you temporarily.”
Tang Zhen froze slightly.
Last night… she had indeed said that.
At the time, she hadn’t thought much about it; she had just expressed her truest feelings.
“That sentence is wrong.”
Ren Yanjing corrected her. “The correct sentence should be—Ren Yanjing will always belong to Tang Zhen.”
“So—I will always belong to you.”
