The Strong Wife from Peasant Family7 min read437 of 466

Li Qingling kept shouting, “Slow down! Slow down!” She hurried forward, lifting Xiaoxiao out of the stroller and carrying her to the gate, while reminding Diandian not to push too fast, careful not to let her fall.

Diandian nodded and let out an excited “Awooo!” as it pushed Xiaoxiao along.

Once outside the courtyard, Xiaoxiao lifted her little finger, pointing toward the backyard, babbling happily.

“Awooo awooo…” Diandian asked, “Xiaoxiao, you want to go to the backyard?”

Xiaoxiao understood and enthusiastically patted the stroller.

Diandian spun around in a cool circle and began pushing Xiaoxiao toward the backyard.

The servants in the mansion were used to this scene by now.

At first, they were astonished. Diandian was impressive—not only could it hunt, but it could also take care of children.

Now, seeing this every day, they barely batted an eye.

“Diandian, where are you pushing Xiaoxiao?” Li Qingning happened to run into the pair halfway and quickly called out.

Diandian turned its head to glance at her and let out a playful “Awooo!”

“Giggling…” Xiaoxiao patted the stroller and stretched her little hands, asking Li Qingning to pick her up.

Li Qingning stepped forward, lifted the little girl, and kissed her cheek. “Tell Auntie, Xiaoxiao, where do you want to go play?” If she hadn’t met her here, she would have missed her again.

Ever since Xiaoxiao was born, she made it a habit to check on her every day. If she missed even one day, she felt empty inside.

Xiaoxiao giggled and smothered Li Qingning’s face with drool, but Li Qingning didn’t mind, still smiling as she asked again where Xiaoxiao wanted to go.

The little girl pointed toward the backyard and babbled twice.

Though she couldn’t speak yet, her gestures were precise.

Li Qingning understood—it was the backyard Xiaoxiao wanted to play in.

“Shall Auntie carry you there?”

Xiaoxiao babbled twice more, clutching Li Qingning’s neck tightly with her tiny hands.

Li Qingning’s heart melted. She slowly walked to the backyard, holding the child, with Diandian pushing the stroller behind them.

As soon as they reached the backyard, Ah Huang and Ah Bai ran out from the house. Seeing them, Xiaoxiao abandoned Li Qingning and climbed onto Ah Huang’s back to play.

Li Qingning gently patted her little bottom. “Little rascal,” she murmured, carefully placing her onto Ah Huang’s back.

Thankfully, Ah Huang was strong, or it wouldn’t have been able to carry both of them.

Ah Huang shot Diandian a proud glance and leisurely walked in circles around the backyard with Li Qingning and Xiaoxiao on its back.

Diandian felt a pang of jealousy. It was strong enough to carry them too, so why didn’t they choose it?

If Diandian knew that Li Qingling thought it was still too small and didn’t let them ride it, would it feel even more frustrated?

Xiaoxiao bounced happily on Ah Huang’s back, babbling constantly.

Once she grew tired of this, she expected Diandian to push her to other places to play.

Diandian slowly pushed her to the front gate, its eyes darting as it asked Xiaoxiao if she wanted to go shopping, teasing her that there were many fun and tasty things outside.

Xiaoxiao patted the stroller excitedly, pointing outside the gate.

“No, you can’t go out to play,” Li Qingning, who had been following Xiaoxiao, objected.

“Awooo awooo…” I’ll protect you.

“Ahhh…”

“Awooo awooo…” Xiaoxiao wants to go out.

“Ahhh…”

Li Qingning was at her wit’s end with the two of them. She furrowed her brow but reluctantly nodded. “Alright, alright, just go out for a bit, then come back. Don’t stay out too long, okay?” She had no choice but to give in to them.

If she refused, they would surely drive her crazy.

Diandian nodded, brimming with pride, pushing the stroller to the gate. It let out two sharp “Awooo”s at the guard and gestured for him to open the gate.

The servant looked at Diandian, then at Li Qingning, hesitating. “Are you really letting Diandian take Miss out? Is that okay?”

Li Qingning nodded. “Open the gate. They’ll only be gone for a little while.”

The servant hurriedly opened the gate and even helped carry the stroller outside.

Diandian grinned, bouncing on its legs, and pushed Xiaoxiao quickly onto the street.

“Hey, Diandian, slow down!” Li Qingning ran after them, worried that the speed might make Xiaoxiao fall.

Hearing her, Diandian slowed to a steady pace.

People on the street stared in disbelief. That… that’s Lord Dian? And… who’s that little girl in the strange carriage?

“Miss Qingning, you’re out shopping? And who’s the little girl Lord Dian is pushing?” someone asked, curious as they followed Li Qingning.

They had never seen such a cute little girl.

Li Qingning didn’t blink at Xiaoxiao, answering the crowd, “She’s my niece, Xiaoxiao.”

Xiaoxiao?

Isn’t she the county magistrate’s daughter?

“So it’s the young lady! No wonder she’s so pretty.”

“Ah, so the rumors are true! Lord Dian can hunt and also take care of children—amazing!”

“Lord Dian is smart and can even push the young lady around for fun.”

The townspeople whispered excitedly as they followed behind.

Li Qingning glanced back, seeing the crowd following, and massaged her forehead. She knew this would happen.

She looked ahead at the one person and one tiger eagerly exploring everything, and sighed helplessly. The two of them, so clueless, didn’t realize the commotion they were causing.

Xiaoxiao was truly happy, turning her little head curiously and looking around.

Diandian paid no attention to the crowd behind; all its focus was on Xiaoxiao, constantly asking, “Are you happy?”

If Xiaoxiao was happy, it would take her out more often to let her see the world.

It wished Xiaoxiao were a little older so she could ride on its back directly, without needing a stroller.

“Ahhh…” Passing by a sugar-skewer vendor, Xiaoxiao craned her neck, drooling.

Diandian glanced, bit the stroller, and backed up. It looked at the vendor and softly went “Awooo.”

The vendor, used to seeing Diandian around, wasn’t afraid. He smiled and handed a skewer to Xiaoxiao. “Here, young lady, take it!”

Xiaoxiao gave him a cheeky smile, melting the vendor’s heart, and he handed her another skewer.

Holding two red skewers, Xiaoxiao giggled, looking for Li Qingning.

Li Qingning frowned. “Xiaoxiao, did you pay for these? Hm? My sister said you can’t just take things from townsfolk.”

Sensing Li Qingning’s displeasure, Xiaoxiao stopped smiling and extended the skewer toward her, offering it to her.

This tiny gesture softened Li Qingning’s stern heart. She tapped Xiaoxiao’s nose. “You sure know how to sweet-talk people.” She took the skewer and handed six coins to the vendor.

The vendor waved them off, insisting it was a gift.

Li Qingning shook her head firmly. “No, my sister says the common people work hard. We can’t take their things.” She glanced at the ever-smiling Xiaoxiao. “Sir, you must take this; otherwise, my sister will be angry.” She pressed the coins into his hand.

The vendor, touched, handed Xiaoxiao another skewer and ran off before Li Qingning could react.

Li Qingning: “…”

Xiaoxiao looked at the extra skewer in her hand in confusion and babbled to Li Qingning, as if asking, Why do I have another one?

“The uncle gave it to you, little foodie.”

Xiaoxiao giggled, twisted her small body, and shoved a skewer into Diandian’s mouth.

Diandian happily twirled and quickly finished the skewer with a crunch.

“….”

Li Qingning was speechless. She didn’t even know if Diandian had tasted it properly.

Xiaoxiao’s eyes widened, and she poked Diandian’s mouth with her tiny finger.

Diandian cooperated, opening its mouth. Seeing nothing inside, Xiaoxiao frowned, puzzled at how the skewer had disappeared.

The townspeople laughed at her confusion, thinking Xiaoxiao was both clever and adorable.

“Little silly, don’t look—Diandian ate it.” Xiaoxiao gently pinched her nose. “You don’t have teeth yet; you can’t eat it. Just look.”

Xiaoxiao blinked, plucked one candy off the skewer in her hand, and held it out to Diandian, babbling twice.

Diandian was deeply touched. Xiaoxiao was so kind; it would be even better to her.

It flicked out its tongue, curling it around the candy, and snatched it away.

Seeing Diandian eat it, Xiaoxiao was satisfied and even licked the candy with her tiny tongue, savoring the sweet taste.

She squinted, clutching the skewer tightly and licking it nonstop.

Li Qingning worried she might overeat and tried to take it, but Xiaoxiao refused, babbling angrily.

Reluctantly, Li Qingning let her be.

“Awooo awooo…” Diandian asked, “Xiaoxiao, do you want to see your daddy?”

Xiaoxiao responded with a happy babble.

Diandian interpreted her response as agreement and excitedly pushed her toward the magistrate’s office.

“Hey, stinky Diandian! Where are you taking Xiaoxiao now? If you don’t come back soon, my sister will scold you!”

Diandian pretended not to hear Li Qingning, pushing Xiaoxiao at full speed.
