“Lord Li? You!” Silver Wolf’s face changed drastically. He looked at the people in front of him, then at Lady Li behind him. A cold light erupted in his eyes. Did they send people to capture them? They hadn’t done anything wrong—why were these guards coming after them?
Luo Mingyu patted Silver Wolf on the shoulder and shook his head. “He thinks we’re monsters.”
“Monsters? So what if I’m a monster? Lord Li, I’m a monster, but they’re human. We came here on business; we wouldn’t hurt you. You…”
The words “I am a monster” echoed through the courtyard. Lady Li’s necklace suddenly fell to the ground. She stared in shock at the four people in front of her and stumbled backward in fear.
So what if they were monsters? Couldn’t monsters appear here?
“Since they’re monsters, there’s nothing more to discuss. Take them down!” the man said with a deep, commanding voice. Sharp light flashed in his eyes as he drew his sword, pointing at Luo Mingyu and Ling Ruoxi. “I’ll capture these monsters and report back to the capital!”
Ling Ruoxi, resting her chin on her hand, smiled faintly. “I find it strange. If we are really monsters able to disguise ourselves as humans, can your strength even compare to ours?” She raised her brows slightly and laughed. “Besides, in Duanyun Kingdom, there’s no law forbidding monsters from entering the city.”
“You—!” The man’s expression changed. Indeed, monsters that could transform into humans had already evolved into divine beasts. With their current strength, they were no match for the people in front of him. But hearing her words, he refused to yield and shouted angrily: “The emperor just issued a decree: all cities ban monsters from roaming freely to ensure everyone’s safety. All monsters must return to their pet spaces unless you leave Duanyun Kingdom, otherwise—hmph!”
“Damn it, Nangong Mo! This is totally personal. Just because I left without saying goodbye, he’s holding a grudge. Next time I go back, I’ll make that crazy girl Qian Yi beat him up properly!” Silver Wolf jumped up in anger, glaring forward, wishing he could rush to the capital and confront him immediately. He had never heard that monsters weren’t allowed in cities. If monsters can’t enter the city, it means they can’t be sold either—they’d have to stay in the suburbs.
The man standing in front of them turned red with anger. “How dare you speak the names of the emperor and empress directly! You’ve gone too far!”
“Stop!” Soldiers rushed forward, splitting the crowd. The man on horseback vaulted up, sweat covering his forehead. The person standing at the gate immediately cupped his hands and said, “City Lord, these four—”
“Silence! Get aside!” the city lord roared. He looked at the four in front of him, tore open his robe, and suddenly knelt, cupping his hands. “I am Ye Ming, here to—”
“That’s enough. No need for formalities. This is your explanation to handle. Let’s go. Oh, and remember to tell that old man Murong Ming—we’ve found the first one.” Ling Ruoxi frowned and hooked her arm around Luo Mingyu.
The man clearly understood her intention. With a wave of his right hand, purple Dou Qi enveloped all four of them. In the blink of an eye, they vanished from everyone’s sight. The color of the Dou Qi slammed into the hearts of the onlookers like a heavy hammer. Such a young man, and he was a Purple Sovereign Dou Qi master!
Ye Ming lifted his head, sweat dripping from his forehead. He glared at Li Yi. “You! You’ve angered me! I treated you like brothers and gave you such a chance—and look at what you’ve done!”
“Brother Ye, what’s going on?” Li Yi trembled. He realized the gravity of the situation. Weren’t these four supposed to be monsters? Why were they treated with such importance?
Rubbing his temples, Ye Ming said coldly, “Li Yi, Li Yi… clever yet foolish! How could they be monsters? They are sworn brothers of the current emperor. During the rebellion in the capital, they alone turned the tide, saving the citizens and defeating Liyun’s monster army. They stopped the million-strong army from attacking the capital and helped the emperor ascend the throne. Even the current empress holds them in high regard. Not long ago, the emperor issued a public announcement demanding they be brought back!”
“What? Bring them back? Their background…” Li Yi was stunned, frozen in place. Could it be… those names on the earlier announcement? And their faces… they really looked alike. Could these people really be…
Ye Ming nodded, sighing. “Exactly. They come from Qiongyu Immortal Island—the holy sons and daughters, along with their monster companions and the medicinal master—top-tier people. I intended to befriend them for personal gain, but…”
In the end, it was all in vain.
Ling Ruoxi and Luo Mingyu hadn’t expected this. These people had merely tried to curry favor for private gain, unaware that the four would only be in the area briefly.
As for old man Murong Ming, he had spent years deciphering the compass and searching for Purple Bamboo with no results. Yet in just one month of travel, they had already found one. And they even had someone capable of reading the compass with them.
But their current challenge wasn’t the compass or the bamboo—it was…
“I think, judging by the shapes on the map, the next country is Donglin Yunshui, known for its scenic beauty. It’s obvious there’s Purple Bamboo there,” Silver Wolf said confidently, stroking his chin.
Green Robe smirked disdainfully, holding a parchment scroll. “You think everyone’s as naïve as you, assuming a place is good just because it looks nice? Do you remember last time you couldn’t even tell north from south, yet claimed you could find bamboo? Look—the map shows lines heading west. Once we leave Duanyun Kingdom and find this place, heading west takes us toward the ink region.”
“Though west, we leave from Duanyun Kingdom via the southeast border. To get there, we must detour around the ink region and proceed forward. The map only has the country names—it’s vague. Many locations share the same features; we can’t check each one sequentially,” Luo Mingyu said, knocking on a tree. An hour had already passed, yet the two ahead hadn’t decided on a path.
Ling Ruoxi was even more frustrated. She was unfamiliar with the continent. Even with perfect insight abilities, it was only useful for survival, not map navigation. A task that even troubled Luo Mingyu was far more frustrating for her.
“Let’s follow my advice—head toward Yunshui Country. Trust my instincts,” Silver Wolf said.
“Exactly because you rely on your instincts, you’re wrong. Nobody would follow you blindly. We need to go around the water, toward the ink region. That path leads to—”
“Not necessarily. The map is just a visual guide. If it’s drawn reversed, we’d go the completely wrong way…”
The noisy bickering reached Ling Ruoxi’s ears. She covered her head with her hands, eyes blurry, crouching low and crawling forward.
“What’s this—acting like a turtle now?” Luo Mingyu dashed out, grinning. His tall figure was fully exposed. With a sharp whoosh, a precise sound rang out, locking onto him almost instantly.
Uh…
His smile froze. Luo Mingyu’s eyes flickered coldly as he looked at the two armies in the valley.
Armored soldiers stood with bows drawn, aimed at the hill. The two armies remained, but their target seemed misdirected. The red-clad man on horseback looked up, eyes flashing with anger. “Who are you?”
“I… I’m just a passerby,” Luo Mingyu said stiffly. How could he know the plain below was a battlefield? He hadn’t expected Ling Ruoxi to act this way to hide their identities and observe the situation.
Of course, being noticed was inevitable.
His words made Ling Ruoxi struggle to hold back laughter. Her crescent-shaped eyes watched Luo Mingyu. The unlucky fools deserved it—who would really be “just passing by” in a battlefield?
The armored man’s expression changed drastically. “Nonsense! No passerby would be here. You’re a spy from another country, aren’t you!”
“I don’t know this man; he’s not from our country!” A woman in military attire shouted, drawing her bow, aiming at Luo Mingyu. Her eyes glinted, locking onto him.
Luo Mingyu waved his hands helplessly. “I really am just passing by! You don’t believe me…”
Whoosh! A lightning-fast arrow shot forward, cutting through the air, aimed directly at Luo Mingyu.
His expression stiffened. He dodged and grabbed the arrow mid-flight, turning to look at the woman below. Frowning, he said, “I told you, I’m just passing by. Believe it or not. Ruoxi, let’s go.” With a lift of his hand, the crouching Ling Ruoxi was instantly revealed.
