Silver Wolf was holding a small monster in his hands. He hooked the creature’s head with his fingers, frowning slightly. “Are you sure you want the core inside? That thing’s useless.”
“Dig it out—I need it,” the one in the green robe said impatiently, counting the crystal cores in hand.
Silver Wolf frowned. His slender fingers pierced through the monster’s head. With a clever twist, he extracted the core, and as he opened his right hand, the monster’s corpse instantly vanished.
Li Yi trembled violently at the sight, stepping back. “No! You—you must go notify the authorities immediately. Have them send guards! You must stop them!”
“Yes!” Li Lei nodded and ran off without hesitation.
Meanwhile, the one in green robe looked at the people in the hall and smiled. “Lord Li, you’re still here?”
Li Yi’s voice shook as he replied, “Yes… you two… are back?”
The green-robed one nodded. “Right, just returned. Oh, by the way, I have something to give you in a moment. Come on, Xiao Bai.”
Watching them leave, Li Yi wiped the sweat from his forehead. Something… give something? He was sweating nervously. Even if it was an order from the city lord, he wouldn’t follow blindly—this concerned their very lives!
He quickly picked up some paper and wrote down the situation: these four were monsters with motives, they couldn’t be left behind, and guards had been arranged to capture them all.
Ling Ruoxi, finishing packing her things into her storage ring, frowned. “Don’t you think Lord Li is acting a bit strange?”
Luo Mingyu smiled faintly. “What do you think? His son saw us with monsters and fought in the Bamboo Sea over the Purple Bamboo. Do you think he’d tell anyone about that?”
“So what if he did? Does Lord Li forbid us from taking the Purple Bamboo?” Ling Ruoxi rolled her eyes and started walking.
Luo Mingyu chuckled and followed her. “No, what I mean is that boy might exaggerate things and look for a chance to oppose us. But now that Green Robe and Silver Wolf are back, we can leave soon.”
“Hey, wait. Before we leave, I need to give this to Lady Li.” The green-robed one appeared behind, placing a hand on Ling Ruoxi’s shoulder and opening the right hand—a necklace made from a demon core.
It had been polished and carved with Dou Qi, a massive undertaking to perfectly shape it. But Ling Ruoxi was even more surprised—the necklace had also been soaked in medicinal herbs. Wearing it would repel low-level monsters, sharpen the mind, and make the wearer resistant to poisons. How could someone go to such lengths to craft such a gift?
Sensing her curiosity, the green-robed one raised an eyebrow and smiled. “Of course. We’ve been here a few days, and Lady Li was very kind, chatting with us and giving us lots of treats. Her health isn’t great, and she often suffers from insomnia, so I made this. Plus, all the music these past days was annoying—so I took a walk and brought this back.”
“What? I caught the monster and dug out the core, you did nothing!” Silver Wolf complained, but then sighed and reminisced, “Though Lady Li’s pastries were really delicious—memorable indeed.”
“Did nothing? I soaked the necklace in hundreds of herbs and polished it to perfection. You think I didn’t work? Still, leaving makes me a bit reluctant,” Green Robe chuckled, holding the necklace.
Ling Ruoxi twitched at the corners of her mouth. In such a short time, these two boys were already like family to someone else. And Lady Li seemed to enjoy sending treats to her servants.
A young maid approached, bowing. “Young masters, Lady Li invites you to the garden.”
Green Robe and Silver Wolf shook their heads but went along—they could at least see her one last time.
In the garden, servants stood ready. Pastries were on the stone table with cups of tea. Lady Li’s face was pale, and Li Yi clenched his hands, looking even paler.
“Lady Li, we’ve arrived! What delicious pastries are for us today? My favorite—osmanthus cake!” Silver Wolf ran over, hugging Lady Li before sitting down and stuffing the cake into his mouth.
Lady Li frowned but nodded. “Eat, eat. You must be hungry. Where did you go today?”
“Went to the nearby mountains, caught a few monsters. Oh, Green Robe has a gift for you too.” Silver Wolf smiled, glancing at Li Yi. “Why is your face so pale?”
“Ah… just caught a chill earlier, that’s all…” Li Yi’s face darkened, avoiding Silver Wolf’s gaze.
Green Robe stepped forward, concerned. “Lady Li, are you unwell? The wind was strong these past nights—you might have caught a chill. Your health is weak, be careful.”
“I… I know. You… sit and have some cake too,” Lady Li said awkwardly, hands clasped.
Ling Ruoxi and Luo Mingyu sat, noticing the two’s pale faces. Clearly, Li Yi had told Lady Li about the monsters—otherwise, she wouldn’t behave this strangely.
“The taste is wonderful, but Lady Li, we must leave today. Once we depart, we don’t know when we’ll meet again. This is a small token from Xiao Bai and me; please accept it.” Green Robe held out the polished, smooth demon-core necklace, glowing faintly with a milky light.
Lady Li was stunned, taking it instinctively. “What… what is this made of? Looks special… it must be expensive. I can’t take it.”
“Nonsense. This was made by Green Robe and me. Lady Li, you’ve taken care of us—please accept it.” Silver Wolf smiled with his mouth full of cake.
Lady Li’s heart trembled. These four didn’t seem like monsters. Silver Wolf, with his silver hair, was like a carefree child, innocent and naive.
“You two worked hard. How long did this take?” Lady Li asked, holding the necklace, feeling a refreshing aura and faint fragrance.
“Not much time,” Green Robe said with a smile.
“Yes, just a flick of the hand, a bit of mental energy,” Silver Wolf added, casually revealing part of the truth while eating cake.
Lady Li’s face darkened, speechless.
Ling Ruoxi gave Silver Wolf a sharp kick with her foot, smiling faintly. “Lord and Lady Li, thank you for your hospitality. We must depart—Xiao Bai, let’s go.”
“Oh, Lady Li, I’m leaving—you must think of me!” Silver Wolf jumped up, stretching.
Li Yi glanced around nervously, sweat dripping. “Uh, four of you, it’s getting late… perhaps leave tomorrow? It’s already past noon, not suitable for travel.”
Silver Wolf looked confused. “Late? But the sun just came out! Do we wait until evening?”
“Of course not. But the midday sun is strong—traveling now risks heatstroke. Best to wait,” Li Yi said awkwardly, forcing a smile.
“Heatstroke? Hah!” Green Robe laughed. “Lord Li, I know you’re reluctant for us to leave, but it’s really fine. Spring sun in March–April—no risk of heatstroke.”
Boom!
The Li family gate shook violently. Guards poured in, rushing the hall.
Silver Wolf raised his brow, stepping forward angrily. “Who dares trespass into Lord Li’s mansion? Get out!”
“Is it you?”
A man approached, frowning. He looked at the four inside, masked, with silver hair, and a scholarly-looking man among them. Could this group really be monsters in disguise?
Silver Wolf looked at them, puzzled. “We are what? Who are you?”
Li Yi jumped forward quickly, pointing frantically. “Yes! It’s them! Please save us! We don’t know their purpose—if it’s to kill, we’re doomed!”
