Ling Ruoxi, carried by the sleeve-arrow to the side, sucked in a deep breath. She concentrated her fighting energy in her legs, trying to lighten her weight as much as possible so she wouldn’t sink again.
Fortunately, she had dodged just in time; otherwise, the Earth-Spike Dragon would have squashed her into a pulp! And with the swamp beneath her, she probably would have been stuck there for the rest of her life.
From a distance, the swamp above continued to flow toward the massive pit, while the Earth-Spike Dragon below showed no movement—it seemed completely buried.
“Phew… damn it! Do you even dare chase me now? If I’d known this, I wouldn’t have circled around—I should have just dragged you here straight away!” Ling Ruoxi patted her chest and exhaled.
But…
Before she could wipe the sweat from her forehead, the swamp beneath her suddenly surged. A fierce gust of wind swept past, and the figure trapped underground suddenly shot upward—the massive black shape leapt into the air.
At that moment, Ling Ruoxi felt as if the entire world had lost its color. Her eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. The leaping figure was like the heaviest cloud on the horizon, riding the wind in flight. Its bulky body couldn’t stay airborne for long, but it was enough—the distance was fully sufficient for landing.
“Holy hell!” she wailed. The slender figure practically bounced out of its original spot, rolling violently forward.
“Boom!” Another pit appeared. Dirt and mud flew everywhere, and Ling Ruoxi was thrown dozens of meters back by the recoil, almost vomiting from the impact. The frail figure dashed forward at top speed.
Damn it! How could the Earth-Spike Dragon be this ridiculously overpowered? She hadn’t even had time to react before this beast had knocked her down. No matter how strong she got, there was no way she could even escape the swamp on her own!
So, she kept up a sort of marathon with the Earth-Spike Dragon. Her clothes fluttered, black hair streamed behind her, and no matter how dangerous it got, she could rely on her intelligence to dodge each perilous moment.
Half a year later…
Her light frame moved like a small bird, freely wandering through the mountains. No matter how the Earth-Spike Dragon jumped or chased, she could evade it with ease. The beast’s sensing power had grown stronger than when she first arrived—at the mere thought, she could anticipate where it intended to strike.
Facing the black silhouette on the ground, her tiny body tilted. With a flick of her foot, she had already dodged, while a purple fighting energy dome formed around her, protecting her completely.
Even the fierce gusts of wind couldn’t harm her. The dragon’s thick tail lashed violently, but she leapt gracefully over it, landing on its massive head. Her hand shot out to strike the enormous skull.
“Bang!”
“Ah! My hand!”
The next moment, her expression changed drastically. The fighting energy that had protected her hands had vanished somehow, meaning this punch was all flesh and bone against the beast’s hard head.
Her arm nearly broke, and Ling Ruoxi cried out in pain. Even after so long, her fighting energy couldn’t sustain itself for too long; it could disappear at any moment, unpredictably.
“Roar!” The Earth-Spike Dragon bellowed. Familiar with this move, it stomped the ground with its heavy body and raised its massive head.
“Ah!” Flailing, she tried to grab onto it but was too slow. Its hard body had no suitable point for her to latch onto, and below were sharp dorsal spikes—was she about to die on them?
Just as she was about to fall, a silver figure suddenly appeared in midair, pressing the dragon’s nose down and lifting it effortlessly. The ten-meter-long body shot upward like lightning, and with a “swish,” the imposing man flung it away.
“Bang!”
Landing on her butt, Ling Ruoxi yelled in pain, holding her rear with one hand and glaring at the man above. Damn it! What’s the use of catching her mid-air if he throws her down like this? Her insides almost spilled out!
“You alright?” Luo Mingyu asked, bemused, as he landed and pulled her up. Touching her right hand, his brows knitted slightly—her tiny fist was covered in blood. That sudden strike to the hard head was bound to cause injury.
He tapped lightly on her head, holding some ointment. “When will you stop being so careless? After all this time, you still haven’t mastered fighting energy? Look at yourself—you know now how dangerous it is.”
“Stop nagging! I’ve been hurt before, who cares? Failure is the mother of success! If I didn’t fail a few times, how could I succeed? Ow—lightly!” Ling Ruoxi groaned, knowing he was punishing her. Looking at her bandaged arm, she realized she couldn’t continue training for the next few days.
But… her lips twitched, panicking. “Hey, Luo Mingyu! You just threw the Earth-Spike Dragon away! How am I supposed to train tomorrow?”
“No need to train anymore. Your level is already enough,” Luo Mingyu said, hiding the cold glint in his eyes as he pressed her tiny head gently.
No training? How could that be? She could now dodge the dragon, but killing it was a whole different matter—she still wasn’t strong enough.
“Based on your current strength, killing an Earth-Spike Dragon is like a baby trying to slay a tiger—you’re far from strong enough. On Death Island, the slowest creatures are the Earth-Spike Dragons. Considering your strength, that’s why it was chosen,” Luo Mingyu explained with a faint smile.
“…Is he insulting me?” Ling Ruoxi pinched the flesh around his waist, raising an eyebrow. “You’re underestimating me? No matter how terrifying Death Island is, my speed just now should have been fast enough!”
“Fast enough? Then show me. If you can have dinner ready before sunset, then I’ll consider you fast enough,” Luo Mingyu said, half amused, extending his hand as the outer array trembled.
A wild rabbit darted in, and even fish leaped from the water, forming a rainbow from the splashing droplets.
These animals… Ling Ruoxi paused. She realized that during all her months of training, except for the Earth-Spike Dragon, she hadn’t seen other creatures. The man had been using the array to block them all outside.
“Good. You can move now. I’ve kept the larger demonic beasts outside. I hope you’ll prepare something for dinner!” Luo Mingyu tapped her forehead and sat cross-legged in meditation.
Her lungs nearly exploded—she knew he was provoking her, trying to prevent her from making dinner. Fine! She’d show him!
Rolling up her sleeves, the bandaged right hand didn’t hinder her. Locking eyes on the rabbit ahead, she wiped her nose. Rabbit meat was tender—roasting would be perfect. Her mouth watered just thinking of it.
With a surge of energy, she pounced like a tiger, lungs filled with power, targeting the rabbit. Tonight’s dinner was within reach!
“Bang!” She collided with a tree, stars spinning in her vision. Shaking her head, she came out of the dizziness.
Impossible! The rabbit had been only a centimeter away! But just as her hands were about to grab it, the rabbit vanished.
Yes—instant teleportation! Glowering at the rabbit a meter away, Ling Ruoxi couldn’t believe it. Her strength here wasn’t even enough to catch a tiny rabbit?
“Stop right there!” She dashed through the forest, pouncing, rolling, tiptoeing like a cat—but she still couldn’t catch the rabbit five meters ahead.
Watching this, Luo Mingyu stifled a laugh. If it were that simple, it would be too easy. Any creature living on Death Island must remain extremely vigilant. Comfort breeds no talent, and even these basic beasts here possess abilities unseen outside.
Outside, even the strongest beasts would be nothing here.
Smiling faintly, Luo Mingyu half-closed his eyes, watching her leap and dash about. He almost couldn’t hold back his laughter.
“You!” Seeing him trying not to laugh, Ling Ruoxi, ignoring the dust on her face, glared fiercely at him. But the shameless man closed his eyes, pretending not to see her.
Fine. Dinner—if not rabbit, then fish!
She focused on the flowing river, watching fish leap. Surely their speed wouldn’t be too fast? Tonight, it would be fish!
As a plump fish jumped, she lunged to grab it—but it sensed danger and vanished mid-air.
“Splash!” More fish jumped, like dancing in a plaza. Flailing, she tried to catch them—but they were too elusive. Not a single one could she catch!
“Damn it, you’re forcing me!” she roared, nearly going berserk. She unleashed her sleeve-arrow, twenty meters of steel wire unfurling. Her life-saving sleeve-arrow became a fish-catching tool!
Luo Mingyu nearly spat out his saliva. That’s how she intended to catch fish?
But even this didn’t work. The long steel wire twisted and looped, forming a massive net. The jumping fish couldn’t fall—trapped in the tangled steel web.
