After that case, Team 2 became almost idle.

On the weekend of February 14th, Zhou Hai was still fast asleep when the mattress suddenly sank and something slapped his face hard. He jolted awake, pulled out his earplugs, and kicked whatever was causing trouble on top of him off the bed.

Because of that movement, he lost his balance as well and rolled off the bed with the blanket. Half-awake, Zhou Hai squinted in the dim room, reached out, and put on his glasses.

A domineering voice rang out.

“I told you to get up, and you kicked me!”

By then, Zhou Hai already knew who it was. Barefoot, he got up from the floor and turned on the bedroom light, only to see a little girl in a bunny onesie standing there with her hands on her hips, clearly annoyed.

“Sorry…? But how did you get in?”

The little girl shook a key in her hand. “I found it on the spare key hook.”

Zhou Hai’s expression darkened. “It’s my day off today. Can’t I sleep a little longer if I’m not working?”

“A little longer? My God! It’s already nine o’clock! Do you even know what day it is?”

Zhou Hai paused. “What day? Weekend?”

The little girl sighed dramatically, walked up to him, pulled out her phone, switched it to the calendar, and held it in front of his eyes.

“Look. Today is February 14th—Valentine’s Day. In your mind, is Valentine’s Day for sleeping in?
Did you forget you have a girlfriend you just started dating?”

After being bombarded, Zhou Hai’s mind gradually cleared. He did remember that he and Lu Xi had just confirmed their relationship. Although it felt a bit like being married and dating again at the same time, Valentine’s Day really shouldn’t be wasted.

But why was this kid so invested?

“Lu Xi isn’t at home?”

The little girl replied impatiently, then pulled open all the curtains.

“Right. She got a call this morning and went out. I couldn’t understand what they were saying—it was some kind of southern dialect Chinese, and the tone was weird. And the caller was a man!”

Seeing how serious she looked, Zhou Hai couldn’t help but laugh. “Why are you so nervous?”

“How can I not be nervous? That guy seemed very familiar with Lu Xi, and she even laughed!” the girl said anxiously. “She didn’t know I was awake and quietly left the room. And you’re not even worried at all?”

Just then, the door was gently opened.

The little girl immediately rushed out—and sure enough, it was Lu Xi returning. The girl instantly pounced onto her.

Lu Xi, caught off guard, raised the bag in her hand in confusion.

“What’s wrong, Luo Luo?”

The little girl pouted. “When I woke up and didn’t see you, I thought I heard you talking on the phone in my sleep… I thought you left and didn’t want us anymore!”

Lu Xi gently patted her short hair. “A friend sent me some things and had them delivered to my home. I just went to pick them up.”

Only then did Luo Luo notice the bag in her hands. Zhou Hai had already walked over and helped Lu Xi take the two large bags.

“Put them in the room or where?”

“Just put them on the dining table and open them. They’re just candies and snacks. Since no one’s at home there anyway, I brought them here so we can eat them during the New Year.”

As the boxes were opened, Luo Luo began sniffing excitedly.

“What is this?”

Lu Xi pushed the box toward her. Inside were individually wrapped snacks divided into four large bags.

“My friend is from Inner Mongolia. Every year she sends my family some specialties—spiced beef jerky, handmade cheese snacks, raisin milk beans, milk tofu. Try them all.”

Luo Luo pulled out a chair, sat down in front of the food, opened one milk bean snack, and stuffed it into her mouth. The rich milk aroma mixed with the sweetness of raisins exploded in her mouth, soft and perfect.

“This is so good! China is amazing!”

Lu Xi nodded seriously. “I think so too. I’ve developed a Chinese stomach—I can’t handle Western food every day. It feels like torture for my taste buds.”

Zhou Hai looked at her and gently patted her head.

“Let’s go out and have fun today. I have a few days off during Spring Festival. Why don’t we plan a trip?”

Both Luo Luo and Lu Xi cheered, “Great!”

After a quick cleanup, they headed out.

It was close to Spring Festival, and also Valentine’s Day, so the streets were full of flower stalls. Zhou Hai drove to McKale Mall.

Lu Xi and Luo Luo were confused.

“Aren’t we going out to have fun and eat?” they asked.

“Let’s go buy gifts first.”

They exchanged looks but followed him out of the car. The three of them went straight to the first floor of the mall. Because of Valentine’s Day, many couples were gathered around the jewelry counters. Zhou Hai led them over as well.

He picked a gold pendant shaped like a cartoon dragon with a black leather cord and placed it in front of Luo Luo, asking the clerk to let her try it on.

Luo Luo looked surprised and tugged his sleeve.

“Today is Valentine’s Day, and you’re giving me a gift? Shouldn’t you be taking care of your girlfriend? No wonder you’re still single at your age.”

Zhou Hai pinched her nose, finally stopping her chatter.

“You’re my family.”

“Put it on and try it. Otherwise you’ll get jealous later.”

Luo Luo froze for a moment and stopped resisting. Zhou Hai’s words echoed in her mind. Even though John was her stepfather, he felt more like a friend, but Zhou Hai felt different.

He always seemed indifferent and hard to approach, but once you got to know him, he truly valued the people around him.

Quietly, she let the clerk put the necklace on her. The playful little dragon actually suited her very well.

Zhou Hai seemed satisfied with the nose pinch and even pinched her again, then handed his card to the clerk and paid.

He then took Lu Xi’s hand.

“Alright, now it’s your turn.”

Lu Xi blushed slightly but didn’t pull away, nodding.

“I don’t want it to be just one person’s gift. Since it’s Valentine’s Day, we should both wear something together.”

Zhou Hai thought for a moment but couldn’t think of anything suitable. The clerk then presented a tray of matching rings.

“Sir, these couple rings are perfect for lovers in a relationship. Why not try them?”

Rings… Zhou Hai hadn’t even considered them. They meant too much—lifelong commitment.

Before he could refuse, Lu Xi gently pushed the tray away.

“Thank you, but my boyfriend is a doctor. He can’t wear rings at work anyway. Even if we buy them, he wouldn’t be able to wear them. Let’s choose something else.”

Zhou Hai was slightly surprised. He hadn’t expected her to think about him like that. He said nothing, just tightened his grip on her hand, a faint smile forming at the corner of his lips.

The clerk didn’t insist and instead pointed to another section.

“In that case, you might want to look at jade pendants. We have many couple designs today.”

Just as they were about to turn, a man suddenly crashed toward Lu Xi.

Zhou Hai didn’t even have time to shout. He immediately stepped in front of Lu Xi and Luo Luo.

A loud crash of glass shattered across the entire first floor. Flying shards cut through Zhou Hai’s down jacket, tearing multiple holes as white feathers burst out.

The man who had crashed in was covered in blood, shouting as he turned and pointed in a direction.

“Bitch! Bitch!”
