Cheng Qiao nodded, swiping her dagger to quickly remove the bears’ innards. All but the gallbladders went to Haidong Qing and its three cubs.
Hantong helped clean up. Soon, they loaded the skinned bears onto the vehicle, along with a little newcomer—the wolf cub from the back mountains near Beijing.
The wolf cub, seeing the bloody pile in the truck, sniffed, then backed off. It was bear meat, but it had grown used to cooked food and no longer liked raw meat.
Hantong hadn’t seen the wolf cub in a long time, almost forgetting it. Seeing a majestic black male wolf in the truck, she immediately drew her dagger.
The wolf cub rolled its eyes. Hantong recalled its origin, sheepishly putting the dagger away and reaching to pat its head—but it dodged.
Hantong felt disgusted. All the animals Cheng Qiao raised were unfriendly toward her. She hadn’t done anything, just a bit cautious—why so petty?
Cheng Li and Cheng Liguo stood at the entrance of Deng’s small restaurant, accompanied by two girls: one, Wu Xiaoling, the biological granddaughter of Wu Hongxin, and the other, Mai Sui, Hantong’s adopted daughter.
Seeing Cheng Qiao and Hantong return, the two girls immediately ran toward them—one toward Cheng Qiao, the other toward Hantong.
Before she could even speak, Wu Xiaolin exclaimed in surprise. It turned out the little wolf was sticking closely behind Cheng Qiao, never leaving her side.
“Dog… how can there be such a big dog?”
“A wolf… how can there be a wolf here?”
Wu Xiaolin didn’t recognize that the small black creature in front of her was actually a wolf, but Mai Sui immediately recognized it. When her mother was alive, she used to take her hunting deep in the mountains and forests, so she had seen many wolf packs.
“Don’t be afraid. I raised it. I plan to keep it at the family farm to guard the place.”
Wu Xiaolin’s eyes widened. A wolf as a guard? Truly, Aunt Cheng Qiao, whom even her grandfather trusted, was exceptional—everything she did was extraordinary.
“Does it have a name?”
“Yes, it’s called Wang Zai. Wang Zai, this is Wu Xiaolin, and this is Mai Sui. Remember their scent. Don’t scare them, understand?”
Wang Zai immediately walked over and sniffed at them. Wu Xiaolin felt afraid, but she gritted her teeth and stayed firm. To everyone’s surprise, Mai Sui even reached out her hand.
Cheng Qiao felt slightly concerned. Wang Zai wasn’t as gentle as it appeared on the surface. She was about to speak when the scene before her stunned her.
Hantong straightened his back, but his eyes carried an indescribable emotion—part regret, part joy.
“I’m Mai Sui. You’re the wolf king’s cub, right? Will you be my good friend?”
Wang Zai tucked its tail and looked submissive, while its noble wolf head was casually stroked by Mai Sui.
“Hantong…”
Cheng Qiao felt both astonished and doubtful. She remembered Hantong had once told her that this girl’s mother had the ability to tame wild beasts. Wang Zai was the wolf king’s child, naturally possessing a regal aura. Yet here, in front of Mai Sui, it behaved so humbly.
Hantong shook her head helplessly. She had truly hoped Mai Sui would be just an ordinary child—growing up smoothly, marrying, and having children.
But now it seemed that ordinary happiness would slip away from her, replaced by gradually developing her powers, eventually following in her mother’s footsteps.
No… that wouldn’t happen. This child was kind-hearted and surely had a bright future. She wouldn’t die young like her mother. Hantong’s hopeful mood plummeted, and she gently pulled Mai Sui into her arms.
“Mom, did you catch the bear?”
Mai Sui noticed Hantong trembling slightly. Her eyes flickered as she realized her ability had been discovered by Hantong’s mother. She quickly diverted attention.
“Of course. I’ll go get it. You and Wu Xiaolin go inside.”
The little girl nodded and ran toward the small restaurant. She now feared most to see Hantong sad. Having abilities was truly wonderful.
Boss Deng had been anxiously waiting. All the dishes were ready—everything except the bear paws. When he saw Hantong carry in four bear paws with his hands, he nearly fell over.
This young lady was fierce—carrying such heavy items by hand!
“I’ll do it. I’ll put the bear paws on the cart and push them in.”
Bear paws can’t be eaten fresh, but Boss Deng had already thought of a good way. His ancestors were imperial chefs, so he naturally had countless culinary techniques.
After washing her hands, Hantong realized she hadn’t yet introduced her daughter to Cheng Qiao. Though both Cheng Qiao and Mai Sui were aware, formalities still needed to be observed.
“Mai Sui, let me introduce you. This is Cheng Qiao, Cheng Mother Li. Qiao, this is my good friend’s daughter, Mai Sui. Sadly, her mother passed away young, so this little girl is now under my care.”
Cheng Qiao kindly took Mai Sui’s small hand. The little girl was the same age as Wu Xiaolin, but clearly shorter.
It wasn’t that Hantong mistreated her daughter. Most of her monthly salary went to her care. Yet the girl grew slowly and never gained much weight.
“You need to eat more and take supplements to grow healthy.”
“Thank you, Aunt Qiao. I’ll remember.”
Mai Sui looked up at Cheng Qiao, staring unblinkingly at her face. No wonder Cheng Li looked so good-looking—he really took after his mother. Her own mother had been beautiful too, but she would never see her again.
The sadness in Mai Sui’s eyes flashed and disappeared. Today was the grand opening of Aunt Qiao’s family farm—she couldn’t be childish now.
“After dinner, you two will come home with me. I’ve already prepared a room for you.”
“Thank you, Aunt Qiao.”
“Thank you, Aunty.”
The two girls spoke in unison—Wu Xiaolin said “Aunty.” Cheng Qiao smiled warmly, her dimples showing, brows like emerald feathers, skin like snow. The two little girls were instantly enchanted by her smile.
“Xiaolin, Aunt Qiao… she’s really beautiful.”
“Yeah, and you haven’t met Cheng Li’s father yet. He’s handsome too.”
Wu Xiaolin proudly lifted her head. Not only had she met Cheng Li’s father, she had even seen him in action against bad guys.
Mai Sui’s eyes sparkled in anticipation. She knew Cheng Li’s father would definitely come for dinner tonight. If Wu Xiaolin admired him so, he must be impressive.
Li Huan finally arrived, so busy that he barely had time to drink water. But seeing their family farm opening with such success, he was overjoyed.
He carried two boxes, filled with various kinds of alcohol: strong spirits, light rice wine, sweet old wine that could easily get one drunk, and several bottles of red wine with different labels.
But when he saw the black Wang Zai, he almost dropped the bottles. Luckily, he reacted quickly and caught them, avoiding any loss.
