Qin Daqiang, wearing a military coat, stood amid the bustling crowd. The street was lively, all thanks to Cheng Qiao and Li Huan—bringing a university, a clinic, and the family farm.
In a couple of years, there would also be an administrative building, dormitories, an elementary school, a middle school, and even a department store—all part of Cheng Qiao and Li Huan’s plan.
And everything would belong to the garrison stationed in Liangzhou, so the responsibility carried by the brigade commander was no small matter. Though it was stressful, it was also motivating.
“Kid, take photos here. Don’t just focus on the family farm. Haven’t you noticed the street vendors’ business is booming too? That’s the ripple effect.”
Qin Guoqing quickly aimed his camera at the street vendors. Today, the brigade commander—his father—had given him a serious assignment: to turn everything that happened today into written records.
“Are the photos done? Once they’re ready, submit them to the newspaper so everyone knows that our Liangzhou garrison is moving toward prosperity and strength.”
“Dad, taking the photos is fine, but submitting to the paper requires writing an article, and I don’t know how to do that.”
“You don’t know? Then have your wife write it. She’s a college graduate—surely she can write an article.”
“But Lele…”
“Let her write it. A happy mood might even reduce her pregnancy discomfort. Your mother was like this; listen to me, I’m right.”
“All right, I’ll go back. Oh, and tonight there’s an opening banquet at Deng’s Restaurant. Don’t forget.”
Hearing about the banquet, Qin Daqiang’s heart leapt. The last two times, the steamed bear paws that Boss Deng made were delicious. He wondered if there would still be bear paws tonight. Tsk…
Hantong and Cheng Qiao had arrived at the Qilian Mountains the previous night. Haidong Qing sensed Cheng Qiao approaching and quickly flew over, only for Cheng Qiao to toss the three now-grown fledglings toward it.
Startled, Haidong Qing forgot to flap its wings and fell from the air. Luckily, it wasn’t far from the ground, but the fall still hurt.
Hantong suppressed her laughter, careful not to be seen by this grudge-holding bird. If it noticed, it might drop a load of droppings on her head—disgusting!
“Take your kids with you, or if they turn out to be hens and roosters, don’t blame me for stewing them.”
Haidong Qing looked longingly at the three little Haidong Qings now soaring freely in the sky. How could it have forgotten about its own kids? Freedom was over.
“Have there been any brown bears around lately? We need to catch one.”
Haidong Qing’s eyes lit up. “I’ll help you catch a bear, as long as you help me take care of the kids.”
“Dream on. Even if you won’t help, there’s still Little Redhead.”
Little Redhead… Haidong Qing felt pressure. This was a weirdo. It would rather wander the Qilian Mountains than return to the space because it couldn’t handle this guy.
“Some time ago, a family of four black bears came to the mountains. Several people have already died under their paws. Such a pity for those people.”
“What? When did this happen? Why didn’t anyone intervene?”
“Those people deserved it. The heavy snow sealed the mountains, and villagers weren’t allowed to go up. They didn’t listen. What could be done? They were asking for trouble, except for you…”
Haidong Qing’s gaze shifted to Hantong. Hantong’s back tensed, ready to flee. If it weren’t for this dead bird belonging to Cheng Qiao, she would have acted already.
This time, Haidong Qing’s look was friendly, probably forgot about the past. Well, it was just an eagle. Hantong finally relaxed.
“Hantong, let’s go up the mountain. Haidong Qing knows where the family of four black bears is. Two of those bears have already killed people. Today, we must deal with all of them.”
“Four black bears…”
Hantong frowned. They couldn’t underestimate these giants—they were incredibly strong. Handling two at a time with Cheng Qiao would be manageable, but four? That could be risky.
The two moved quickly. Before long, they reached mid-mountain, where a sharp, pungent stench wafted through the air. Haidong Qing refused to get closer—it liked cleanliness and hated unhygienic bears.
Cheng Qiao closed her eyes and felt her energy, sensing a heat in her eyes. She looked toward the cave ahead. She could see through human bodies—maybe she could see through the mountain?
Unfortunately, the mountain was too thick. All she saw was a shallow, dark layer—the surface rock inside the mountain.
“Let’s go. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”
“Cheng Qiao, wait here. I’m faster; I’ll scout ahead.”
No sooner had Hantong spoken than she ran off. Ten minutes later, she returned with two small black bear cubs in her hands.
Cheng Qiao smiled upon seeing the cubs. Ah, they were just young bears. Easy enough. She tossed them into the space and then drew a sharp dagger, eyes coldly fixed on the big black bear pursuing Hantong. Hantong was too fast; if not for the plan to take all the bears at once, the big black bear wouldn’t have been able to catch her.
The big black bear chased Hantong tightly, suddenly feeling a mysterious pressure that drained its anger.
It immediately tried to brake, forgetting that a mother bear and two cubs were following. Those two cubs were its hard-earned offspring—no way a two-legged creature could take them.
It intended to eat the two-legged creature. Though the taste wasn’t great, the internal organs could feed its cubs. The mother bear, chasing, had already divided the meat in her mind.
But she didn’t notice the big black bear ahead suddenly brake, colliding heavily, and both black bears tumbled directly in front of Cheng Qiao and Hantong.
Quick-eyed, Cheng Qiao plunged her dagger into the heart of the big black bear—the fatal point. Once injured here, the bear was essentially done.
Hantong was shocked at Cheng Qiao’s speed and drew her own dagger. But the mother bear, sensing the blood, glared at Hantong with hostility.
Hantong shook her head helplessly. “Wrong target. I didn’t kill your mate. But anyway, I’m going to kill you, too—eat humans, get hunted.”
The mother bear and Hantong fought fiercely. The frenzied mother bear was tough, but Hantong was nimble, circling a towering tree. The bear could only follow in loops.
After spinning herself dizzy, Hantong flicked her dagger, stabbing the bear’s crescent-shaped area. That was the end of it.
Haidong Qing, perched on a rock, adjusted its wings, now looking at Hantong with changed eyes. Its desire to mess with her vanished; it didn’t want to die like the mother bear.
“Let’s go, or we’ll miss the opening banquet.”
