RMM – Chapter 96 In the Hospital Room

Rebirth: A Military Marriage 9 min read 98 of 365 18

She hadn’t expected it would happen so quickly, so suddenly—she was actually pregnant…

It wasn’t that she had never thought about children before. Sometimes she had even quietly looked forward to it. But now that it came out of the blue, Su Ruo found herself at a loss.

Once the initial shock and confusion faded, she calmed down. Gently resting her hand on her still-flat belly, an indescribable feeling welled up inside her. She had a child now, growing here within her…

A child that belonged to her and Xi Yuechen.

At this thought, a wave of joy began to spread in her heart. Her pale face finally showed a hint of a smile, glowing faintly with a gentle radiance.

When Zhang Huaqing hurried to the hospital, Shen Liang was guarding the door. She quickly caught hold of Zhang Huaqing, who was about to rush inside, pointed toward the hospital room with its door pulled shut, hushed her, and led her aside.

“What’s going on?” Zhang Huaqing asked in a hushed voice, unable to stop grinning from ear to ear.

“She just found out. She’s not quite adjusted yet. Let her have some quiet.” Shen Liang replied softly, her eyes crinkled with an ever-present smile.

“We’ve been waiting for this day for who knows how long. Finally she’s pregnant, and yet she’s upset.” Zhang Huaqing scolded lightly, though the joy in her heart couldn’t be hidden. “So how is she now? In a really bad mood?”

“Oh, young people are all like this, aren’t they? It’s not that she’s in a bad mood—it’s just the news came too suddenly, she wasn’t prepared.”

The two of them sat down together on chairs in the corridor, speaking in hushed tones.

When Shen Liang had called, Zhang Huaqing had just been about to leave with Su Feng for an army event. Families of officers could attend, and as the military district commander, Su Feng usually took Zhang Huaqing with him to such things.

But they had barely stepped outside the courtyard when Zhang Huaqing’s phone rang.

“What? Really?!”

Her sudden exclamation made Su Feng frown. Was it necessary to be so shocked?

But the next second, Su Feng froze as well, looking no less stunned than Zhang Huaqing.

“Ruo Ruo’s pregnant? Which hospital are you at?”

Zhang Huaqing hastily hung up and rushed off without sparing a glance for Su Feng behind her.

“Come back!” Su Feng barked, his face dark with displeasure.

Only then did Zhang Huaqing remember him. She turned back and said hurriedly, “Oh, didn’t you hear? Ruo Ruo’s pregnant! You go to the army event yourself—I’m going to the hospital to see my daughter.”

Su Feng’s anger wasn’t really about that. He snorted coldly: “So your daughter isn’t my daughter too? And why is she at the hospital? Did something happen?”

How could he not be delighted that his daughter was pregnant? He had been longing for this grandchild for so long. Once Ruo Ruo gave birth, he could finally show off. With the conditions his daughter and son-in-law had, wouldn’t their child be one in a million? It would make those old men who bragged in front of him all the time die of envy. Hmph.

But why was she in the hospital? Didn’t Zhengjia Hospital even provide home visits? Hopefully nothing bad had happened.

“How else would they know she’s pregnant without going to the hospital? You hurry along now—don’t delay me from seeing my daughter.” Knowing Su Feng couldn’t skip the military event, Zhang Huaqing didn’t insist on taking him along. She muttered joyfully to herself, “At last, we’ll have a grandchild.”

Seeing her so elated left Su Feng unhappy. Of course he wanted to go see his daughter too, but today’s event really needed his presence. Without Zhang Huaqing it was manageable, but he himself couldn’t just skip. With no choice, he could only watch as she rushed happily off to the hospital while he sullenly climbed into his car for the army base. He resolved to leave as soon as the event wrapped up—seeing his daughter was the real priority.

After sitting with Shen Liang for a while, Zhang Huaqing grew restless. “It should be fine by now, right? Let’s go in and take a look. My heart’s just scratching like a cat’s paw, I can’t stand it anymore.”

Shen Liang couldn’t help but chuckle. Understanding her feelings, she nodded. “It’s been a while already. Let’s go in—better not to leave her alone too long.”

Just as they reached the door, Zhang Huaqing suddenly thought of something and asked, “By the way, has this been told to Yuechen yet?”

“I tried calling, but his phone was off. I’ll try again tonight.” Shen Liang’s joy dimmed slightly, and she let out a long sigh.

Now that Ruo Ruo was pregnant, if only Yuechen were home, it would truly be a complete and happy reunion. But as it was, not only could he not come back, even his phone was unreachable. Transferred to Province D—it wasn’t like he’d been sent abroad on peacekeeping duty. Why did he have to keep his phone off all the time?

Zhang Huaqing sighed as well, feeling conflicted. She had already anticipated this when they discussed the marriage, but still couldn’t help feeling regretful. Her daughter was pregnant, yet her husband couldn’t even be home—how hard that must be.

“Speaking of this, our Xi family really owes Ruo Ruo a lot. With Yuechen’s personality, it’s fortunate she’s willing to be so tolerant. Their relationship has been improving, and that comforts us. But now that Yuechen has been transferred again, who knows when he’ll be able to come home. I’d wanted him to dote on her after marriage, but instead she’s even more worn out, pregnant without her husband by her side…”

Shen Liang trailed off with guilt. Ruo Ruo could have had a much easier life. Coming to the Xi family, she seemed to have given up so much.

“Oh, what are you saying?” Zhang Huaqing grasped his hand and said sincerely, “We thought about all this from the start. Besides, it was Ruo Ruo’s own choice. Of course there’s hardship, but that’s life. Yuechen may be busy, but in every other way he’s exceptional. Ruo Ruo is blessed.”

And she meant it. Though her son-in-law was often absent, the Xi family truly treated her daughter well, and Yuechen was reliable, measured, and trustworthy. She had no worries about her daughter being wronged.

So yes, she felt tender pity, but not resentment. Seeing Shen Liang still looking guilty, she frowned and scolded lightly, “Don’t say such things again. What nonsense. Aside from his absence, what part of Ruo Ruo’s life in your family isn’t good? To say you ‘owe her’—nonsense! If anything, it’s her good fortune to marry Yuechen. Now she’s finally pregnant, and you’re still pulling a long face. The older you get, the more unpleasant you become.”

Hearing this, Shen Liang gave a long sigh of relief. She knew her words came from the heart, not mere comfort. Fine then. If her son couldn’t be present, they would just take better care of Ruo Ruo, never letting her suffer.

When they finally entered the ward, they found Su Ruo asleep. One hand lay under the quilt, clearly resting on her belly from the rise of the blanket. Her sleeping face was peaceful, faintly smiling.

Seeing this, the two immediately knew she had accepted the child. They exchanged a knowing smile and quietly sat down in the outer room, not disturbing her.

By the time Su Ruo slowly woke, it was already dusk. The warm golden glow of the sunset filtered softly through the window, bathing the room in calm warmth.

After her nap, she felt much better. Looking around, she didn’t see anyone, but could faintly hear voices outside.

Frowning slightly as she struggled to sit up, she called tentatively, “Mom? Is that you out there?”

In the outer room, Zhang Huaqing and Shen Liang were still chatting. At her voice, they both rose and quickly entered.

Seeing her struggling, Zhang Huaqing rushed forward to support her.

“Why didn’t you call us when you woke? You don’t have the strength right now.” she scolded gently.

“It’s not like I had surgery. You don’t need to be so cautious.” Su Ruo said with a smile once she was settled.

Before Zhang Huaqing could reply, Xi Yuehui entered with a thermal food container.

“I was just about to call you—you came at the perfect time.” Shen Liang said with a smile, taking the container.

“Aunt Zhang,” Yuehui greeted politely before turning to Su Ruo with a teasing grin. “Well, well—our great heroine is awake. I haven’t even congratulated you yet, haha.”

Blushing slightly at his teasing, Su Ruo pretended indifference, but her cheeks reddened all the same. The whole idea of being pregnant still felt surreal to her, and being teased only made her more self-conscious.

The mood in the ward brightened instantly. Shen Liang ladled steaming hot soup into a bowl.

“Here, drink this while it’s hot. The doctor said you’re overworked and undernourished. The pregnancy is still a little unstable, so we’ll need to build you up well.” Her face showed guilt as she added, “It’s my fault, insisting you learn all that etiquette…”

“Mom, don’t say that. Learning those things was for my own good. Who could have expected this? It’s not your fault.” Su Ruo comforted her with a smile. “I know you only want the best for me.”

Hearing this, Zhang Huaqing sighed inwardly. Her daughter had truly grown up, knowing how to comfort others. It warmed her, yet pained her too.

Su Ruo insisted on drinking the soup herself. The warmth spread through her stomach, lifting her spirits.

“By the way, Mom… when did this happen? How far along am I?” She was surprised she hadn’t noticed anything at all.

“The doctor said nearly two months. And you—you didn’t even notice your period was so late, nor paid attention to your body’s changes. What kind of mother will you be like this?”

Su Ruo flushed with embarrassment. To be called “a mother” felt so strange.

“Don’t scold her. Were you so much better when you were pregnant with Ruo Ruo? Have you forgotten?” Shen Liang teased.

Interrupted in the middle of lecturing her daughter, Zhang Huaqing felt embarrassed and snapped back angrily, glaring at her.

Su Ruo and Xi Yuehui couldn’t help laughing helplessly. These two—after all these years, they still bickered at the drop of a hat.
