RMM – Chapter 95 An Unexpected Shock and Joy

Rebirth: A Military Marriage 9 min read 97 of 365 32

As usual, Su Ruo went out with Shen Liang today, but she returned quickly and didn’t stay out for long.

After this period of training, when Su Ruo put on a proper air, she truly did carry a hint of noble grace—but she was still too young, her presence not yet strong enough.

As for things like art exhibitions and concerts, Shen Liang noticed Su Ruo always seemed uninterested. Since she clearly had no passion for such events, Shen Liang stopped bringing her along. There was no need to force her, especially when she was still so young—it was natural she couldn’t endure such occasions.

While practicing yoga on the bedroom balcony, Su Ruo suddenly felt extremely tired and a little nauseous. It came in waves. She thought it was just because she had been too busy and overworked these past few days, so she ignored it and continued.

Why am I getting so weak over just a little activity? Instead of becoming healthier, my body feels more delicate than ever.

But after a while, she realized she really couldn’t keep going. Her strength failed her, and a faint pain throbbed in her abdomen.

Su Ruo assumed it was because her period was about to come. Sometimes, her stomach would ache beforehand. Ever since her last cycle ended, this month’s still hadn’t arrived—but she didn’t think much of it. Before her rebirth, her periods had often been irregular, usually due to stress, exhaustion, and overwork.

Still, it didn’t make sense. This body of hers was supposed to be healthy—why would it be irregular? Could it just be from being busy lately?

Once again, she sighed. It’s true, going from simple to luxurious is easy, but going from luxury back to simplicity is hard. I’ve been pampered for a while, and now I’ve turned into a porcelain doll.

She wondered if the house had any brown sugar. This body of hers didn’t usually suffer from painful periods, so she hadn’t had any since coming here. But with the stabbing pain in her belly now, she stepped off the exercise mat, planning to head downstairs to ask if there was any brown sugar—or at least have a glass of hot water.

Just as she entered the living room, she saw Xi Yuehui coming in from outside, beaming with joy, clearly having encountered some good news.

“Oh! Sister-in-law Ruo, good afternoon.” He looked up and greeted her.

Su Ruo forced a smile, too drained to reply. With one hand pressed to her stomach, she turned toward the kitchen.

Her whole body was weak, her abdomen aching in waves. Cold sweat began to bead on her forehead.

“Hey—sister-in-law, what’s wrong? Not feeling well? You look so pale!” Xi Yuehui quickly noticed something was wrong and changed direction to walk toward her.

Su Ruo was just about to say, I’m fine, don’t worry about me, when suddenly the world spun, her vision went dark, and she collapsed helplessly to the ground.

Right before losing consciousness, she vaguely heard Xi Yuehui’s startled cry—“Sister-in-law!”—and the sound of hurried footsteps rushing toward her.

Will he catch me in time? If I hit the floor, that’s going to hurt…

That was her last thought before everything went black.

Xi Yuehui’s heart jumped when he saw her faint, and he sprinted over. Luckily, he’d already been halfway across the room, so it didn’t take long to reach her. But by then, she had already collapsed to the ground.

He quickly scooped her up in his arms and shouted for help, running toward the door.

Shen Liang, who was in the garden, heard Xi Yuehui calling for his “sister-in-law.” Something about the urgency in his voice sounded off. Was that Ruo Ruo?

She immediately strode toward the living room to see what was happening. Before she even reached it, she heard Xi Yuehui shouting again, his tone filled with genuine panic. Shen Liang’s heart tightened, and she rushed inside—only to see Xi Yuehui carrying Su Ruo out in a hurry.

“What happened? What’s wrong with Ruo Ruo?” Seeing her unconscious, Shen Liang’s voice was tight with worry.

“How should I know? Let’s get her to the hospital first!” Xi Yuehui shot back, already heading out the door.

There was no time for Shen Liang to even change clothes. She just slipped on different shoes and followed closely.

They drove to a nearby branch of the City First Hospital, not far from Zhengjia Compound. They had called ahead on the way, so staff were already waiting at the entrance.

Though it was called a “branch,” it was anything but small. In fact, its equipment and medical team were even more advanced and refined than the main hospital. It specialized in serving Zhengjia Compound, where residents of high rank and great influence lived. To safeguard their health, a top medical team was stationed there year-round, ready for emergencies.

Normally, if anyone at Zhengjia had a minor illness, a doctor would come to the residence with a single phone call. But Xi Yuehui and Shen Liang couldn’t bear to wait—they rushed over themselves.

No one knew how much time had passed before Su Ruo’s delicate brows furrowed slightly. She slowly regained consciousness. Just as her eyes opened, still foggy, she heard Shen Liang’s delighted cry:

“You’re awake, Ruo Ruo? You scared Mom half to death!”

Xi Yuehui stood nearby as well, grinning in relief to see her awake.

Her head still ached, and her body felt drained. The abdominal pain had eased, but weakness lingered.

“Mom,” Su Ruo murmured, confused at how overjoyed they seemed. It was just a fainting spell, wasn’t it? Hardly something to celebrate.

She tried to sit up, but Shen Liang, sitting by her side, quickly pressed a hand to her shoulder.

“Oh no, don’t move! Just lie down and rest,” she urged gently but firmly.

Now more clear-headed, Su Ruo felt increasingly uneasy. What’s going on?

“This is…?” She looked around. This clearly wasn’t their home—it looked like…a hospital?

“Of course. You fainted suddenly, scared us to death, so we rushed you here,” Shen Liang explained. Then her expression lit up, her eyes sparkling with a joy that could barely be contained. “But it turns out… we received the most wonderful news!”

Wonderful news? What kind of news? Su Ruo was utterly lost.

“You’re pregnant!”

The words dropped like a bomb, exploding in her mind.

Pregnant… Pregnant!

She stared in disbelief, as if dreaming. I… I’m actually pregnant? It felt unreal, like something out of a fantasy.

Seeing her stunned expression, Shen Liang nodded knowingly. It was natural to be shocked at such news—especially at her age.

Inside, though, Shen Liang was elated. Finally, Ruo Ruo was pregnant. This meant she was going to be a grandmother! She couldn’t help imagining what the child of her son and Ruo Ruo would look like—how adorable that little one would be!

“Ruo Ruo, I’ve already called your mother. She should be here soon.” Shen Liang’s joy overflowed in her smile, so bright it could hardly be concealed. “I’m so, so happy. Thank you, truly. At last, the Xi family will have a grandchild.”

In fact, she hadn’t only called Zhang Huaqing—she’d dialed nearly everyone she could think of. Except Xi Yuechen, whose phone was off, everyone else had been notified. This was a cause for universal celebration!

Su Ruo smiled faintly at her mother-in-law, though her feelings were complicated.

The news had shaken her to her core. It was too sudden. She hadn’t prepared herself at all, yet a child was already here, already beginning life inside her…

She felt lost, shocked, incredulous. I’m… going to be a mother?

Xi Yuehui, meanwhile, was obviously thrilled at the thought of a future nephew. But he noticed Su Ruo’s subdued mood. Understandable—just yesterday she’d been a carefree young woman, and today she was told she was a mother. That kind of shift was enormous; needing time to accept it was normal.

He nudged his overjoyed mother lightly and motioned toward the dazed Su Ruo.

Shen Liang noticed and smiled quietly. She’ll come around. At first it’s bewildering, but soon she’ll feel the joy too.

“Yuehui, go home for now. I already asked them to make a nourishing soup—bring it over when it’s ready.”

Her voice carried a note of guilt. The doctor had explained Su Ruo fainted because early pregnancy was naturally unstable. Combined with her exhaustion and lack of proper nutrition these past days, the baby had been at risk. If it had gone on like this, there could have been a miscarriage.

The thought chilled Shen Liang. She broke into a cold sweat just imagining it. It’s my fault. I pushed her to learn all those things, exhausting her. I nearly cost us our grandchild.

Looking at Su Ruo’s pale, delicate face as she lay unconscious earlier, Shen Liang’s heart had ached with both joy and guilt.

From now on, she resolved, they had to take the best care of her—make sure she gained some strength, put on some weight. Otherwise, how could her body endure pregnancy, let alone childbirth?

After Xi Yuehui left, Shen Liang touched Su Ruo’s forehead gently.

“Ruo Ruo, I understand how you’re feeling. Every first-time mother feels the same. When I was pregnant with Yuechen, I wasn’t doing much better than you. But believe me, this really is good news.”

Su Ruo glanced at her curiously.

“You see,” Shen Liang said with a soft smile, “a child is the continuation of life. This little one carries your flesh and blood, and Yuechen’s as well. As the tiny face forms, combining features from you both, as that small body grows day by day… Isn’t it a beautiful process?”

“With a child, your bond with Yuechen will only deepen. You’ll truly have a home together. You can’t imagine how warm and happy a house feels when there’s a little one’s laughter inside.”

She went on speaking for quite some time. When she finished, she saw Su Ruo sitting in silence, eyes lowered, lost in thought. Shen Liang smiled gently, patted her hand, and said softly, “I’ll step outside to see if your mother has arrived. You rest here.”

Su Ruo nodded with a faint smile, understanding this was her mother-in-law deliberately giving her space to think.

Aside from the initial shock, she was much calmer now. Slowly, she placed a hand over her lower abdomen, her expression tender and cautious.

So tiny… and yet, a life has already begun to grow here?
