The next day, Su Ruo was sent to the airport by Xi Yuechen.
She knew he had a mission to carry out, and that her staying around would only cause inconvenience, so she didn’t insist, obediently letting him make the arrangements.
Instead of buying her a direct ticket to City B, Xi Yuechen had her fly to City S first, and then transfer to City B.
He had told Brother Long and the others that he came from City S, so for the sake of safety, he also sent Su Ruo there first. That way, even if someone checked, nothing would be exposed.
Su Ruo understood that Xi Yuechen must have his own reasons for doing so. Since he wasn’t willing to explain further, she didn’t press, quietly complying.
At the airport, when it was almost time to board, she looked at Xi Yuechen’s firm and resolute face—without a trace of reluctance—and cursed him inwardly for being a block of wood. Still, she reminded him repeatedly to take care of his health and stay safe, before finally walking unhappily through security and boarding her flight.
As the skyline of City L blurred from view outside her window, Su Ruo sighed. Xi Yuechen, you’d better take good care of yourself. Next time, I want to see you safe and sound.
After sending her off, Xi Yuechen turned and walked out of the airport. He still had a meeting with Brother Long today, and the timing was just right.
Upon reaching City S, Su Ruo had no mood for sightseeing. She simply bought a ticket for City B and hurriedly left.
By the time she arrived in City B, night had fallen. She didn’t take a taxi home but instead called Shen Liang, saying she had returned and was at the airport. If Yuehui was at home, could he come pick her up?
Taxis weren’t allowed into Zhengjia Courtyard, and she was too tired to walk.
Shen Liang was shocked at her sudden return. Hadn’t she just left yesterday? Why was she back in such a hurry?
“Ruoru, tell Mom the truth. Did Yuechen bully you?”
Pulling Su Ruo inside and pouring her a glass of juice, Shen Liang sat her down on the sofa, eyes full of concern.
She wasn’t imagining things—Su Ruo’s weary, travel-worn state and the low spirits in her voice yesterday made her certain something had happened.
Su Ruo, in truth, was exhausted—hours of flights, plus constant worry for Xi Yuechen had drained her. She only wanted to sleep. But since her mother-in-law asked, she couldn’t ignore her. Forcing herself to perk up, she tried to look a little better.
“Mom, really, nothing like that happened. You asked yesterday already. Does the chief seem like the type who bullies people? We’re doing fine.”
“But… you don’t look well.” Shen Liang, after all, was in her fifties, with plenty of life experience. How could she not recognize a forced smile?
“I just got off the plane, that’s all. I’ll be fine tomorrow, don’t worry.” Su Ruo set down her cup after sipping some orange juice, then wrapped her arms around Shen Liang’s and smiled. “I went to the chief’s unit. The conditions weren’t bad, pretty much like here. Not too damp either. Everyone in the unit respects him a lot, they all admire him. When they saw me, they kept calling me ‘sister-in-law,’ so warm and enthusiastic! As for the chief, he’s adapting just fine. He’s capable—no matter where he is, it puts people at ease. Mom, you really raised a good son.”
Her playful words lit up her face with joy, easing Shen Liang’s worries. As long as her son was doing well there, she could rest assured.
In fact, Su Ruo was making all this up on the spot. She hadn’t gone to his unit at all. Yesterday, she spent the night at a hotel, never even stepping outside City L before Xi Yuechen packed her back off home. But she couldn’t tell Shen Liang the truth, so she improvised. Roughly speaking though, what she said wouldn’t be too far off.
After all, who was Xi Yuechen? No matter where he was, he’d never have trouble. With his ability, it was more likely others would avoid provoking him.
So her lies came out naturally, without the slightest guilt.
Shen Liang couldn’t help laughing at her teasing, scolding lightly: “You and that glib tongue! But really, why did you come back so soon? Why not stay a few days longer?”
That was the strangest part—what wife visits her husband only to return the very next day? Could it be that Yuechen had driven her away? Knowing her son’s temperament, it wasn’t impossible.
“This…” Su Ruo forced a smile. “The chief just arrived there and is very busy. I’m not familiar with the place either, and staying around only adds to his burden. He’s already tired with all the military affairs, and if he still had to look after me, I’d feel terrible. So I just slipped away quietly. I’ll go back when he’s fully settled in and less busy.”
She spoke with difficulty, having thought of this excuse the whole way home. She couldn’t possibly say the truth—that Xi Yuechen had special tasks to complete and sent her back so she wouldn’t get in the way. He had told her not to mention anything, and she agreed—it would only cause the family needless worry.
Although Shen Liang still felt something wasn’t right, she couldn’t pinpoint what. Su Ruo looked so sincere that no lie showed. Shen Liang doted on her nearly as much as her son, but still suspected Yuechen must’ve sent her back.
Seeing nothing further in Su Ruo’s expression, she didn’t press. Young couples always had friction—she herself and Xi Jian’an had stumbled through their marriage the same way. As long as her son was doing well, she’d leave it alone.
Noticing Su Ruo’s exhaustion, Shen Liang didn’t keep her any longer, telling her to go rest and talk tomorrow.
Once upstairs, Su Ruo collapsed on the bed, drained both physically and mentally.
She wondered how the chief was doing. Dressed like yesterday, he was probably meeting that Brother Long again.
She thought of calling, but gave up. He must be busy. Better not disturb him.
Spacing out for a while, she eventually got up to wash. Glancing at her silent phone, she sighed, then texted Xi Yuechen: I’m home. Take care of yourself. Then she went to the bathroom.
By the time Xi Yuechen returned to his hotel, it was midnight. He had gone to the Imperial City again. After two days, he realized it had some connection with Yanmen—everyone there was from that group.
Feeling uneasy, he removed his jacket, splashed cold water on his face, and stepped onto the balcony to clear his head in the cool night breeze.
Summer had passed; autumn was setting in, the evening air on the high balcony carried a chill.
Business was always conducted at the drinking table—more alcohol meant better atmosphere, better impressions, and smoother deals.
Fortunately, Xi Yuechen had a good tolerance. But today, even he struggled under their heavy toasting.
Still, it wasn’t in vain. After a few rounds, Brother Long’s attitude toward him had warmed considerably. He even called him “Brother Cheng” and promised to help connect him with higher-ups.
After clearing his head, Xi Yuechen returned inside, turned on the phone he kept in the hotel, and found a message from his little woman.
He was using a different phone now, with a City S number, ensuring no risks. His real phone remained powered off in the hotel. Each night, he only powered it on to report to his superiors.
Seeing her message, he considered calling back but stopped. It was too late—she would already be asleep. Better not disturb her.
Su Ruo, meanwhile, slept deeply for the first time in days. Exhaustion finally caught up. When she awoke and saw the time, she stared wide-eyed—Oh no! So late already? Everyone must be up by now!
Sure enough, when she hurriedly washed and went downstairs, Xi Jian’an and Shen Liang were already eating breakfast.
“Ah, Ruoru, you’re up? Why didn’t you sleep a bit more?” Shen Liang turned at the sound, smiling with concern.
“Dad, Mom.” Su Ruo smiled awkwardly. In her heart she thought—how could she dare keep sleeping when her parents-in-law had been up for ages?
“I wasn’t that tired. I just overslept accidentally.” She smiled again, walking to the table.
“I saved some breakfast for you. Let me have it heated up.” Shen Liang smiled and called toward the kitchen.
Xi Jian’an casually asked about the situation in Province D. Knowing she’d only been there a day, he didn’t expect details, just a general picture, then dropped the matter.
Su Ruo breathed a silent sigh of relief. Thankfully, he didn’t press. In front of her father-in-law, she couldn’t lie so easily. Unlike her mother-in-law, he was a seasoned leader who could see through falsehoods instantly.
Not that he couldn’t find out anyway—if he wanted, he could check with her own father in no time. But what good would it do? Knowing the truth would only make them worry.
Better to keep it hidden for now. After all, this was exactly what Xi Yuechen had instructed her.
