It was only two in the afternoon after they finished eating. Seeing that they still had a lot to talk about, Su Ruo didn’t feel it was appropriate to continue sitting there.
“Commander, it’s been a while since you’ve seen your comrades. Have a good chat—I’ll go take a walk and see if there’s anything I need to buy.”
She turned and spoke softly to Xi Yuechen.
He thought for a moment, then nodded. “Okay. Be careful. You can go find He Wen and the others if needed.”
Hearing the concern in his voice, Su Ruo couldn’t help but grumble inwardly: I’m not a child anymore. What’s there to be worried about?
“You’re leaving, sister-in-law? Don’t go! Are we boring you?” Lin Ge overheard their conversation and teased.
“Of course not. I just remembered there’s something I need to buy for home, so I thought I’d run out quickly. You all can enjoy yourselves more without me anyway,” Su Ruo replied with a light laugh.
“She has something to do—just let her go,” Xi Yuechen settled it with a final word.
As she was about to leave, Su Ruo reminded him, “Don’t drink too much. If you really get drunk, call me and I’ll come pick you up.”
She was a bit uneasy—these men from the military base would drink endlessly once they started. Besides, there had been a strict crackdown on drunk driving lately. If he got stopped, that’d be a problem. It was better she came to get him if needed.
“Okay.” Xi Yuechen nodded, his expression soft. “You be careful too.”
After Su Ruo left, Lin Ge grinned mischievously. “Captain Xi, you and sister-in-law sure have a good relationship.”
The others chimed in with teasing remarks as well.
Xi Yuechen just raised an eyebrow at them, said nothing, and took a quiet sip from his glass.
Seeing that they couldn’t get anything out of him, the others stifled their gossip. They knew what kind of man Xi Yuechen was—if he didn’t want to talk, you could exhaust every trick in the book and he still wouldn’t say a word.
The conversation soon turned serious as they discussed matters about the military unit. The atmosphere shifted to something more solemn.
After stepping out of National Fragrance, Su Ruo let out a long sigh. It seemed that Lin Ge wasn’t simple either—just a few people setting up a banquet in a high-end place like this, and the others didn’t look like ordinary folks either. Well, it made sense. With someone like Xi Yuechen, a favored son of heaven, how could the people around him be ordinary?
But now, where should she go?
Standing on the sidewalk, staring at the stream of traffic, Su Ruo felt a little lost. Maybe I should ask Su Heng and He Wen to come out, see how things are going with that Mu You situation.
Right, and also Bo’an… She had no idea how the investigation was progressing.
Feeling a bit too full, she decided not to take a cab and just wandered down the street. Traffic was so jammed it wasn’t any faster than walking anyway. Besides, she had left the car for Xi Yuechen—she couldn’t possibly make him take a cab in front of his comrades or have one of them drive him, right?
As she walked, she called Su Heng and He Wen, asking them to meet her at Mu You. She also told them to bring Xi Yuehui and Ren Yue along.
After the call, Su Ruo frowned, debating whether she should call Liang Bo’an too. She wasn’t sure if he’d found anything, and it didn’t feel good to have this hanging over her. Being watched by someone—it was a horrible feeling. She needed to root it out as soon as possible.
“Hello, Bo’an.” The phone was picked up quickly.
“Mm, Ruo Ruo.”
Liang Bo’an was surprised but not entirely. He figured she was still worried about Mu You being framed. He had actually gotten to the bottom of it not long ago, but hadn’t said anything. One, because the culprit no longer posed a threat, and two, because—selfishly—he wanted Su Ruo to contact him on her own.
Still, he hadn’t expected her to call so soon. Everyone knew Xi Yuechen had returned—weren’t they supposed to be together now? Liang Bo’an chuckled softly, though there was a trace of lonely self-mockery in his smile.
“What are you doing right now? You’re not too busy, are you?” Su Ruo asked while picking her way through the shaded side of the street to avoid the sun.
“Not busy. Even if I was, I’d drop everything for you.”
Hearing the teasing in his tone, Su Ruo couldn’t help laughing. After spending time with Liang Bo’an lately, she found he wasn’t at all like the rumors—ruthless and cunning. He was actually very loyal to his friends.
“Don’t tease me. You make it sound like I’m some sort of calamity. I just wanted to ask—did you find anything about that incident?”
To me, you are a calamity. Liang Bo’an felt a tightness in his chest at the thought.
“Yeah, I found the person behind it. I’m still looking into his network. Don’t worry—he won’t make any moves anytime soon.”
He didn’t tell her everything. If he laid it all out, who knew how long it would be before she contacted him again? And besides, this was a deep rabbit hole—too complicated to explain over the phone.
“Alright, that’s fine. If you’re free, come to Mu You later. I’ve called Su Heng, He Wen, and the others too.”
Su Ruo didn’t suspect anything. As long as there was a lead, she wasn’t too worried—she was confident it would eventually be resolved.
“Sure, I’ll head over now. Where are you? Want me to come pick you up?” Liang Bo’an heard traffic in the background—she was clearly still out and about.
“No need, I’m just taking a walk. It’s not far. You go ahead.”
After hanging up, Liang Bo’an called for his secretary while gathering his things.
“I need to go out. Cancel all my afternoon meetings. If representatives from Yuanteng show up, entertain them. Also, hold off on those pending contracts—wait until I return.”
The secretary looked troubled. “But…”
“No buts. Do as I say. Handle the details yourselves.”
Liang Bo’an’s cold tone cut off any objections. Grabbing his car keys, he walked out without a backward glance.
…There’s a very important meeting this afternoon, boss. You’re the one who insisted on it. And today’s Yuanteng meeting was for final contract negotiations—also critical… The secretary stared at the closed door in silent frustration.
But thinking about how his boss normally operated, he sighed. Whatever. Boss can do whatever he wants—I’m just here for the paycheck. No need to mess with that venomous snake.
Su Ruo walked a little farther before her phone rang again. It was Su Heng.
“What is it?”
“Sister, where are you? We’re all here, waiting for you!”
“I’m almost there, what’s the rush? Just hang out without me for a bit.” Su Ruo glanced at the road, debating whether to grab a cab.
“Hurry up then! You’re the one who called us out, and now you’re late? Hey—Bo’an ge?” Su Heng’s loud tone suddenly softened.
“Bo’an’s already there? Then just sit tight—I’ll catch a cab now. Hanging up!” Su Ruo felt a bit guilty upon hearing Liang Bo’an had arrived. The man had a packed schedule—she couldn’t keep him waiting.
Su Heng stared at his phone gloomily and muttered, The moment you heard Liang Bo’an was here, you got all flustered? Seriously!
Just as Su Ruo reached the roadside to hail a cab, a black sedan pulled up in front of her. Thinking it was an unlicensed car trying to pick up passengers, she waved it off, indicating she wasn’t interested.
But in the blink of an eye, the car door flung open. Two men got out and grabbed her, shoving her into the car.
“Hey—what are you doing?! Let go of me!” Su Ruo shouted and struggled, but how could she possibly fight off two strong men? Before she could finish a word, she was forced into the vehicle, and the door slammed shut.
The next second, the car sped away.
