By the time the two of them finished strolling through the night market, it was already around 10:30 PM.
Xi Yuechen drove slowly. Su Ruo rolled down the car window, letting the gentle breeze brush her cheeks. She felt truly content.
“Commander, thank you for tonight,” Su Ruo said, turning her head toward Xi Yuechen, who was driving.
The familiar light fragrance that always surrounded Su Ruo wafted in on the breeze. Xi Yuechen’s expression softened, and he let out a quiet chuckle before replying, “If you want to come again next time, just let me know.”
Su Ruo smiled and gave a soft “mm,” then turned back to look at the fleeting lights outside the window. Her heart felt warm and full.
Day by day, moment by moment, the little things they shared gradually brought their hearts closer together, letting them lean on and warm each other.
The next day, Su Ruo woke up very early. As expected, Xi Yuechen was already preparing to head out for his morning exercise.
“Commander, wait for me. I want to come too,” Su Ruo said, rubbing her eyes. For some reason, she suddenly wanted to do things together with Xi Yuechen—even if it meant getting up early to exercise.
Xi Yuechen was quite surprised. This little woman always got up at least an hour after him and loved sleeping in. What was going on today?
“If you’re still sleepy, just go back to bed for a bit.”
“It’s fine, I’m not sleepy. Wait for me, I’ll be ready in a minute.” Su Ruo insisted, already getting out of bed and heading into the bathroom.
Xi Yuechen let out a helpless sigh and walked over to the bed, starting to tidy up the parts that Su Ruo hadn’t had time to fix.
Su Ruo washed her face quickly, did some basic skincare, tied her hair into a ponytail, and walked out wearing her exercise clothes. She went to the living room to find Xi Yuechen.
“Commander, I’m ready! Let’s go.” Xi Yuechen was standing on the balcony, looking out the window. When he heard Su Ruo’s cheerful voice, he turned and walked toward her, seeing her waiting eagerly at the door.
Morning exercise, in this case, just meant a simple jog and some stretching. Su Ruo didn’t know what Xi Yuechen’s routine looked like when he was on his own, but why did he make her do stretches after the run that left her gasping for breath?
“Ah, it hurts, hurts—Commander, it hurts…”
Xi Yuechen was pushing her into a split. Her legs were stretched so wide they were almost touching the ground, and the pain was so sharp it felt like her legs were about to be torn apart.
“Hold on a little longer.” No matter how much Su Ruo pleaded, Xi Yuechen remained unmoved, wearing a serious expression as he continued helping her stretch.
Since she had decided to come out for morning exercise, he was going to make sure she trained properly. Besides, Su Ruo had done some dance training when she was younger, so she had a bit of a foundation—it was just that she’d let it slide for years, so picking it up again now was understandably tough.
What Xi Yuechen didn’t know was that Su Ruo sometimes did a bit of yoga at home—but only very casually. She’d try it when she felt like it, never sticking with it seriously. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be in so much pain today.
“I can’t… anymore… Commander, please…” Su Ruo was on the verge of tears. This was self-inflicted torture! She could’ve been sleeping peacefully in bed—what was she doing out here suffering with this brute?
Seeing that Su Ruo truly couldn’t handle it anymore, Xi Yuechen sighed to himself and finally relented. “Alright, we’ll stop here for today.”
But Su Ruo didn’t move. She didn’t even try to get up. Xi Yuechen asked, “What’s wrong?”
Su Ruo looked like she was about to cry. “I can’t get up…”
She was still in a split, pitifully looking up at him, her big eyes full of helplessness and grievance. Xi Yuechen’s heart softened. He crouched down and half-supported, half-lifted her up.
The moment Su Ruo stood up, she swayed, feeling her legs go weak. She quickly grabbed onto Xi Yuechen’s arm in fright.
Xi Yuechen instinctively wrapped an arm around her to support her. “What’s wrong?”
“My legs are shaking,” she said, her legs in sharp pain. She honestly suspected she’d pulled a ligament.
When Xi Yuechen asked, she glared at him in accusation. “My legs hurt. I pulled something!”
Her dramatic accusation made Xi Yuechen feel exasperated and amused at once. She was acting like a child. It was just the usual soreness from starting training again—how could she have actually pulled anything?
“You didn’t pull anything. Pain at the beginning is normal.” Xi Yuechen corrected her.
“You’re not me—how do you know I didn’t pull something? It hurts a lot!” Su Ruo retorted, frowning. She was certain she’d injured herself—it hurt too much to even stand.
Xi Yuechen didn’t argue further. Even if he didn’t fully understand women, he knew this wasn’t the time to debate. He simply fell silent, supporting the nearly limp Su Ruo as she leaned heavily on him.
After a bit of rest, Su Ruo felt slightly better and said, “Okay, let’s go.”
If I ever foolishly come out for morning training with you again, I’m an idiot!
“Let’s grab some breakfast before we go back—it’s just nearby, okay?” Xi Yuechen suggested. After all, what would they eat if they didn’t?
“Ah? Alright then…” Su Ruo answered reluctantly. She didn’t really want to go, but would Xi Yuechen carry her back upstairs and then go out again to buy breakfast? No way—there was no way she could climb the stairs on her own.
Still a bit grumpy, Su Ruo hung herself on Xi Yuechen, her legs still aching.
By the time the two of them finally reached the breakfast shop, it was already getting late. The place was crowded, and when people saw Xi Yuechen supporting Su Ruo, who was walking awkwardly, they all looked on curiously, turning their heads to size the pair up.
Xi Yuechen and Su Ruo remained unfazed under the crowd’s scrutiny. It wasn’t strange to help someone whose legs were sore, right?
The breakfast shop owner recognized Xi Yuechen and greeted him loudly, “Ah, Commander, you’re here? You’re late today. And this is… your wife?”
“Mm.” Xi Yuechen nodded.
“I thought so! I’ve never seen your wife before—she’s beautiful. You two are really sweet, coming to buy breakfast together like this.” The shop owner chatted cheerfully as he worked, wrapping up orders for other customers.
Seeing how warm and friendly the owner was, Su Ruo smiled and nodded politely. She couldn’t help but think of the night market vendor from the evening before—was this level of enthusiasm standard for business owners? Maybe it really was true that attitude made all the difference in sales.
Once the shop owner finished serving the customer ahead, he glanced at Su Ruo, who was leaning tightly against Xi Yuechen, and asked curiously, “Commander, is your wife alright?”
Xi Yuechen raised his eyebrows slightly, glanced at the nearly legless Su Ruo, and calmly replied, “Her legs hurt.”
“Ohhh, I see. Well, that explains it. You’re so sweet to support her like that. Even though she’s not feeling well, she still came with you to buy breakfast. How lovely.”
The shop owner’s knowing tone made Su Ruo feel a little uncomfortable. What exactly had he understood…?
The people nearby were also looking at them with odd little smiles, casting sidelong glances at the two of them. Their expressions were all strangely amused. Su Ruo scanned the room, frowning. What are they all staring at?
Xi Yuechen, however, immediately understood—those looks were full of unspoken assumptions about overindulgence in intimacy.
He glanced at Su Ruo, who looked completely oblivious, and chose not to explain. With how shy she was, if she realized what people were thinking, she’d probably be mortified.
By the time they were leaving, Su Ruo’s legs didn’t hurt quite as much anymore, so she stopped clinging to Xi Yuechen. With so many people around, she didn’t want to be too dramatic and forced herself to walk on her own, albeit unsteadily.
Still, she felt genuinely confused by all those strange looks in the shop.
Is it a crime to go out and buy breakfast with the commander now?
