Not long after Xi Yuechen left, Su Ruo called He Wen and told her to hurry over to pick her up.
He Wen was still asleep. When she saw that it was already six thirty, she was so angry she burst into curses—what kind of madness was this, calling so early in the morning and ruining someone’s good sleep?
Su Ruo glanced at the time as well. She knew it was indeed a bit early—waking someone up was practically inviting a lightning strike—but since she’d already called, how could she back out now? So she repeated herself, urging He Wen to get up and come over quickly, otherwise there wouldn’t be enough time.
Though He Wen was yawning nonstop from sleepiness, her mind was already clear. Frowning, she said, “Ancestor, can you stop being crazy? Have you even thought about it—your place is so far away. A round trip would take the whole day.”
Su Ruo froze. Thinking it over, it really was like that. Even if He Wen set off right now, by the time she got here and then took Su Ruo to City B, it would already be dinner time. There would absolutely be no time to rush back today.
That wouldn’t do.
Realizing this, Su Ruo frowned. Today the chief was going on a load-bearing cross-country run; he’d definitely be exhausted when he got back. How could she possibly stay out overnight?
Then why hadn’t the chief reminded her this morning?
“So what do I do?” Su Ruo asked in return.
“Cold salad!” He Wen was now completely awake. Being woken up so early, she replied irritably, “What else can you do?”
“Hey, we haven’t seen each other for days. I called because I miss you guys, okay? Don’t be ungrateful.”
Su Ruo simply started acting shameless.
“Oh please. Isn’t it because your chief went out and isn’t home? Otherwise you’d remember us? I say you’re just bored with nothing to do.”
He Wen rolled over, sat up, got out of bed, pulled open the curtains, and yawned and stretched toward the newly risen sun.
“Don’t you worry about my chief. Anyway, I’ve called you and conveyed my longing. What you do is up to you.”
Su Ruo played with Xi Zi’s little hand with one hand while continuing to act shameless. To be honest, after not seeing He Wen and Duan Wei for so many days, she really did miss them.
“Alright, alright. Just wait there. I’ll call Weiwei and we’ll come over together. Do you need us to bring anything?”
In the end, He Wen chose to compromise. Rolling her eyes, she spoke impatiently, yet she still thought of Su Ruo and asked if she needed anything.
“No need. I’ve got everything here. Just come yourselves. Call me when you arrive and I’ll come out to meet you.”
Having achieved her goal, Su Ruo was in a good mood, chuckling softly.
After hanging up, Su Ruo got up and started tidying the house. Today would be He Wen and Duan Wei’s first time visiting her little nest. She had to make a good impression. They’d probably arrive around lunchtime, and she needed to prepare a hearty meal to show off her cooking skills.
As for He Wen—after calling Duan Wei and setting a time, she finally went to wash up. She ate breakfast perfunctorily, then drove off.
When she reached the agreed meeting place, Duan Wei still hadn’t arrived. Feeling bored while waiting, He Wen checked the time—it was already seven thirty. Just as she was about to play a game, her phone rang.
“Feng Weijia, I’m telling you in advance—I need to take a day off today. If there’s anything urgent, go find someone else.”
The moment He Wen answered, she rattled everything off in one breath without waiting for the other side to speak.
“Taking leave?”
Feng Weijia raised an eyebrow. “What’s so important that you have to take a day off?”
“I’m going with Weiwei to see Ruoruo. What, you won’t let me go?”
He Wen retorted loudly, not backing down at all.
“To see Su Ruo? Of course you can go,” Feng Weijia agreed readily. Then, as if thinking of something, the smile on his face grew more pronounced. “Actually, I haven’t seen Su Ruo in a long time either. I kind of miss her—and her son. How about I come along and visit too?”
“We’re going to see Ruoruo. What are you tagging along for?” He Wen asked, puzzled, ready to refuse without a second thought.
“Didn’t I say it already? I miss Su Ruo and Xi Zi too. We’re friends, after all. Going to visit isn’t a big deal, right?”
Feng Weijia spoke calmly and unhurriedly, his face full of confident assurance.
Sure enough, hearing this, He Wen hesitated. If he really wanted to go, she didn’t seem to have much ground to refuse.
“Why wait for another day when today will do? Going together is more convenient. Otherwise, how would I, a grown man, go by myself? Alright, stop hesitating—where are you?”
Thinking it did make sense, He Wen ended up absentmindedly giving him the address.
Not long after Feng Weijia hung up, Duan Wei arrived—but…
He Wen stared at Lu Yue standing beside Duan Wei, his presence overwhelmingly strong. She clearly remembered not calling this guy.
Seeing He Wen’s gaze, Duan Wei felt a bit awkward. She coughed lightly and said, “He said he also wanted to go see Ruoruo, so I thought we could all go together…”
“Yeah, it’s been a while. I kind of miss Ruoruo and Xi Zi too. Perfect chance to go with you guys. Otherwise I wouldn’t really get the opportunity, haha.”
Lu Yue leaned in, smiling as he negotiated, though his expression clearly showed he was determined. How could He Wen refuse?
Besides… just moments ago, she’d also agreed to let Feng Weijia come along. Now she had even less standing to say anything about Lu Yue.
Thinking of how identical the two men’s excuses were, He Wen felt utterly embarrassed inside. How could these two be so in sync, as if they’d planned it? Neither early nor late—they both suddenly felt the urge to visit just when she and Duan Wei were going to see Su Ruo.
“Fine, go then. You’ve already brought him—how could I send him back?” He Wen waved her hand casually.
Go ahead. The more the merrier. They could all go and properly bother Su Ruo.
“Then let’s set off. It’s not close, and if we leave now, we’ll arrive just in time for Ruoruo’s lunch.”
Duan Wei had come in Lu Yue’s car and was sitting in the passenger seat. She asked He Wen.
He Wen’s expression turned a little awkward. She forced a casual smile. “Let’s wait a bit. There’s one more person.”
“Who?” Duan Wei asked instinctively. Could it be Wen Shaoning and the others?
But seeing He Wen’s awkward expression, Lu Yue immediately understood. One name popped into his head—who else could it be?
Seems Feng Weijia was quite in sync with him too. Lu Yue chuckled inwardly.
“It’s… Feng Weijia,” He Wen said uncomfortably. “When he heard I was going to see Ruoruo, he insisted on coming along, saying he also wanted to see Ruoruo and Xi Zi. I couldn’t really refuse, so I agreed.”
She avoided looking at Duan Wei and Lu Yue after finishing.
Duan Wei was stunned for a moment, then smiled, her expression full of teasing. But seeing He Wen forcing herself to act nonchalant, she swallowed the joke that had reached her lips, though the smile in her eyes grew more obvious.
Of course Duan Wei knew how Feng Weijia had been sticking to He Wen “every step of the way.” Today, he’d even dropped his work at the company to come over, claiming it was to see Su Ruo—when in truth, it was for He Wen.
He really was persistent.
Duan Wei laughed silently to herself. He Wen wasn’t like before anymore—completely clueless about feelings. Now she knew embarrassment, knew awkwardness. She was probably starting to care about Feng Weijia.
As for these two—who knew when they’d finally have their happy ending.
Glancing at Lu Yue, who was about to make fun of them, Duan Wei reached out and lightly pinched his waist, signaling him not to say anything foolish. If he embarrassed He Wen into anger and then Feng Weijia arrived to an icy reception, how awkward would that be?
Caught off guard, Lu Yue yelped, baring his teeth exaggeratedly. Duan Wei felt helpless and was about to let go—she’d clearly only used three-tenths of her strength. How could it possibly hurt? Completely unserious.
But just as her fingers loosened and hadn’t yet left Lu Yue’s waist, a large hand suddenly wrapped around hers. Immediately, warmth spread through her palm—the body heat of another person.
In an instant, Duan Wei’s face flushed red. She instinctively tried to pull her hand back, but how could Lu Yue let her succeed? The more she struggled, the tighter his grip became, firmly holding her hand.
“Y-you… let go!”
Flushed and embarrassed by the teasing, Duan Wei was clearly flustered. She wanted to struggle again, but worried He Wen might notice something, so she could only lower her voice and scold him. Yet at that moment, in Lu Yue’s eyes, her face looked like rosy clouds, her eyes full of shy indignation—there was no deterrent at all. It was more like coquettish reproach, making his heart ripple uncontrollably.
Seeing that Lu Yue not only didn’t restrain himself but even lightly brushed her palm with his finger, Duan Wei felt both shy and angry. Unable to break free, she simply turned her head away and ignored him.
Lu Yue wasn’t worried at all. Looking at her bright red ears, his smile only grew wider.
At that moment, Feng Weijia finally arrived.
He Wen watched as a taxi stopped in front of her car. A man got out, and her eyes widened slightly—she clearly recognized him.
Of course she did. After being together day in and day out for so long, how could she not?
After getting out of the taxi, Feng Weijia first greeted Lu Yue and Duan Wei, then opened the passenger door of He Wen’s car and bent down to slip inside.
“Where’s your car?” He Wen asked darkly.
“My car? Oh, it was borrowed. I’ll just hitch a ride in your nice car today, okay?”
Feng Weijia smiled ingratiatingly. That handsome face wasn’t ruined by the expression—instead, it took on a different kind of roguish charm.
He Wen suppressed the strange feeling that surged up inside her, snorted coldly, started the car, and complained, “What a coincidence. Of all times to lend it out, you picked a great one.”
At her grumbling, Feng Weijia chuckled. “Isn’t it?”
How could He Wen know that this “great timing” was entirely manufactured by Feng Weijia himself? His car was sitting perfectly fine in the company parking lot—who had borrowed it?
It was nothing more than a lousy excuse he’d cooked up to ride in He Wen’s car.
His calculations were flawless. He knew Duan Wei would definitely be driving her own car. If he drove another one, that’d be three people in three cars—what a waste. Naturally, he could just ride in his Wenwen’s car.
And sure enough, Duan Wei had come in another car—just with an extra Lu Yue.
But whether Lu Yue was there or not had nothing to do with him. As long as he could stay close to his woman, everything else was just noise.
Sitting in the car, breathing in the warm, familiar scent inside He Wen’s vehicle, Feng Weijia felt immensely pleased with himself.
