Su Ruo didn’t know how other regiment commanders did their jobs—whether they spent all day with their soldiers, training alongside them, handling every matter personally—but clearly, Xi Yuechen did exactly that.
Like today: Xi Yuechen was taking his troops out for a loaded cross-country run again, telling her not to wait for him at noon.
What could Su Ruo do except agree? She waved her hand to show she understood, urged him to head out quickly, and told him not to worry about her.
Aside from the first two days, afterward Su Ruo woke up every morning when Xi Yuechen got up. Still half-asleep, she would follow him out of bed and into the bathroom, splash her face with water to wake herself a little, then take the toothbrush he had already put toothpaste on for her. After brushing her teeth, she would wash her face again and finally wipe it with the towel Xi Yuechen handed her.
These movements had gradually become routine, reenacted every single day. Xi Yuechen quite enjoyed lingering like this, patiently “serving” Su Ruo as she brushed her teeth and washed her face in a daze, relying on him for every step. It left him deeply satisfied.
And Su Ruo, like a child who needed looking after, accepted without guilt that brief stretch of Xi Yuechen’s tender, meticulous care.
Of course, habits didn’t form out of nowhere—there had to be a first day, right?
On the third day after she followed the army, Xi Yuechen woke at his usual time. He glanced at Su Ruo in his arms, tightened his embrace slightly, then, feeling content, gently rolled out of bed.
“Chief…”
Unexpectedly, just as Xi Yuechen had taken two steps, a lazy, drowsy voice sounded behind him.
He frowned. He was sure he’d moved quietly enough—how had he still woken the little woman?
Turning around, he saw Su Ruo propped up on one arm, rubbing her eyes with the other, her face full of sleepy confusion, as though she might fall back into deep sleep at any second.
His heart softened. Xi Yuechen sat back down on the bed, reaching out to support her, trying to guide her to lie back down.
“It’s still early. Sleep a bit more.”
It really was—only five thirty. For Su Ruo, that was very early.
But instead of lying back, Su Ruo followed the arm Xi Yuechen had wrapped around her and flopped straight into his embrace, nuzzling against him twice before yawning and saying, “No. I’m getting up too.”
Xi Yuechen frowned. He knew perfectly well that Su Ruo loved sleeping in. She’d once declared that the happiest thing in the world was sleeping until she woke naturally, opening her eyes in warm sunlight—an incomparable joy.
He was a bit dissatisfied with this definition of happiness. Not because she liked sleeping in, but because in her eyes, sleeping late was the happiest thing—so what about him?
Awkward and proud, Colonel Xi felt rather uncomfortable inside, yet couldn’t bring himself to ask something like then what about me? So he silently accepted the fact that, to Su Ruo, he apparently didn’t even rank above sleeping in.
After that, Xi Yuechen generally tried not to disturb Su Ruo when he got up in the morning, letting her sleep deeply and undisturbed, allowing her to carry on with what she considered the happiest thing. But watching her serene sleeping face, curled up like a kitten in his arms, he felt warm all over and deeply content. In the end, he stopped nitpicking over her “happiness theory.” No matter what, the greatest happiness of his life was probably just seeing Su Ruo happy.
So now, seeing that she was clearly exhausted yet insisting on getting up, Xi Yuechen was confused.
“What’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?”
He reached out to touch her forehead.
“I don’t have a fever,” Su Ruo rolled her eyes. “I’ll get up and move around a bit. After you leave, I’ll just go back to sleep.”
Xi Yuechen was speechless. He couldn’t figure out what was going on in her head. But since she insisted on getting up, he couldn’t stop her, so he let her be.
Thus, Su Ruo tugged on Xi Yuechen’s pajama top, squinting as she followed him into the bathroom. She turned on the tap and splashed water on her face. The cold water woke her up a little, but she was still squinting as she instinctively reached for toothpaste and a toothbrush.
Watching her, Xi Yuechen’s face darkened.
Su Ruo did manage to grab two items—one was indeed a toothbrush, though it was his. That wasn’t even the main issue. The most outrageous part was that the other thing she picked up wasn’t toothpaste at all—it was her facial cleanser.
Completely unaware, eyes closed, she was about to squeeze the cleanser onto the toothbrush. Xi Yuechen finally couldn’t just stand by and watch anymore. He reached out and snatched it from her hand.
If he hadn’t been there today, was she planning to brush her teeth with facial cleanser? Suddenly, Xi Yuechen felt his teeth itch.
“What’s wrong?” Su Ruo opened her eyes and looked at him with a still-confused gaze.
“Nothing. I’ll do it for you.”
Seeing how muddleheaded she was, Xi Yuechen felt helpless and decided not to scold her. He simply did it himself.
Still, he couldn’t help wondering—with her in this state, why insist on getting up so early?
“Oh.”
Su Ruo nodded very easily. As for why Xi Yuechen was squeezing toothpaste for her, she didn’t bother thinking about it.
After safely supervising her brushing her teeth, Xi Yuechen still didn’t quite trust her. He stayed beside her, suppressing the urge to help her squeeze facial cleanser, and watched as she continued washing her face.
By the time Su Ruo finished, she was fully awake. Seeing Xi Yuechen standing motionless beside her, she asked curiously, “Why are you standing here?”
“Nothing.”
Clearly unfazed, Xi Yuechen calmly handed her the towel for drying her face.
Su Ruo kept sneaking glances at him out of the corner of her eye. Seeing that he remained completely unruffled, she withdrew her gaze and walked out of the bathroom.
Whatever.
Su Ruo hadn’t gotten up so early just to wash her face—she wanted to be a proper, perfect “virtuous wife and loving mother.” Ahem, yes, that’s right: virtuous wife and loving mother.
Of course, sleeping until she naturally woke, teasing Xi Zi—who lay beside her with his eyes open—then getting up to find breakfast already prepared by Xi Yuechen, all slow and leisurely, was incredibly comfortable.
But Su Ruo felt that her chief worked so hard every day. In the morning, he not only had to prepare his own breakfast, but also hers, then check on Xi Zi, change his diaper, feed him formula, and carry him over to her—while she slept on without a care.
That just didn’t sit right.
She’d come here to reunite with him, to take care of him. His life wasn’t easy. She hadn’t come to change environments just to continue being a “parasite.”
She’d already set her goal: to wholeheartedly be a virtuous wife and loving mother, determined to take perfect care of both her chief and Xi Zi, so their family of three could live in harmony and happiness.
So as a qualified virtuous wife and loving mother, how could she let her husband get up alone at dawn, make breakfast by himself, then leave for work all by himself?
Of course not.
Su Ruo felt that in the morning, she should get up with Xi Yuechen, prepare breakfast for him, eat with him, then hand him his clothes and see him off.
Thoughts led to action—hence this whole scene. Though she was truly sleepy, her mind was perfectly clear, with the four words virtuous wife and loving mother constantly flashing through her head.
When Xi Yuechen came out of the bathroom and didn’t see Su Ruo, he instead heard movement coming from the kitchen.
That’s when it dawned on him—so his little woman had struggled to get up early just to make breakfast for him?
For a moment, he found it both amusing and helpless, yet also genuinely touched.
Xi Yuechen let Su Ruo busy herself in the kitchen without disturbing her, turning instead to the bedroom to check on Xi Zi.
Xi Zi was a light sleeper and woke as soon as he was touched. Xi Yuechen chuckled softly. “Morning, little guy.”
After changing Xi Zi’s diaper, Xi Yuechen figured that since Su Ruo was already up, there was no need to feed formula.
“Chief! Breakfast is ready!”
Right on cue, Su Ruo called out.
Xi Yuechen’s lips curved into a smile as he got up and walked toward the dining area.
Breakfast was simple—steamed buns with soy milk, plus two eggs—but Xi Yuechen was quite happy seeing it. Having someone who keeps you in their heart and tries their best for you—even if it’s simple—is the easiest way to be moved.
Xi Yuechen suddenly remembered Su Ruo’s happiness theory—that sleeping in was the happiest thing. Yet here she was, willingly getting up early to make him breakfast. Did that mean that in her heart, he ranked just a little higher than sleeping in?
Once he figured that out, Xi Yuechen felt even more cheerful. Eating Su Ruo’s simple breakfast, the air around him grew soft and warm, like a spring breeze.
After seeing Xi Yuechen off, Su Ruo stood by the door, her heart sweet as if she’d eaten honey. She giggled foolishly a couple of times before returning to the bedroom, hugging Xi Zi and going back to sleep.
Thus, this routine continued—through Su Ruo’s persistence and Xi Yuechen’s indulgent approval. Naturally, what also continued was Xi Yuechen taking care of Su Ruo while she washed her face.
So that morning, while Xi Yuechen was eating breakfast, he told Su Ruo about his plans for the day.
Her absent-minded response made him frown, and he added worriedly, “If you’re bored, you can go out for a walk.”
“Mhm, I was already planning to call He Wen and the others later. Don’t worry,” Su Ruo nodded, indicating she’d thought it through.
“….”
Xi Yuechen was speechless.
Still, he couldn’t help worrying. “Then how will you get there? Should I leave someone behind to drive you?”
After all, this place was quite far from downtown B City. How was she supposed to carry Xi Zi there by herself? And she couldn’t drive either.
“He Wen can come pick me up. What, are you thinking of abusing your authority? Let your soldiers follow you and do their jobs properly. I’ll be fine.”
Su Ruo laughed. When had this man learned flexibility? In the past, anything related to work was handled with ironclad impartiality—yet now he was willing to make an exception just for her.
She felt happy and reassured him again. “It’s fine. I’ll call He Wen in a bit and ask her to come. If she can’t, I just won’t go out. Don’t worry.”
Only after her repeated assurances did Xi Yuechen finally leave with peace of mind—still reminding her to be careful.
“When did you start sounding like my mom—so naggy,” Su Ruo muttered after seeing him off, though the corners of her mouth kept lifting higher and higher.
