By the time Xi Yuechen returned to the room after his cold shower, Su Ruo had already regained her composure—at least on the surface.
Xi Yuechen walked in and sat on the sofa by the window, casually picking up a magazine and flipping through it in silence.
Since returning to B City, Su Ruo had taken a few military magazines and related books from the study and placed them on the small table in the bedroom for Xi Yuechen, updating them from time to time. The goal was simple: to make sure he wouldn’t get bored while in the room.
In fact, placing the books he liked in the bedroom was a little scheme on Su Ruo’s part. Normally, if he had free time, Xi Yuechen would stay in the study reading or browsing the internet. By putting the books in the bedroom, she could keep him there with her. Apart from not being able to use the computer, anything he wanted to read, she could provide. Reading in the bedroom was essentially the same as reading in the study, wasn’t it?
This way, her commander could stay by her side constantly. Even in silence, just having him there, being able to see him at all times, was enough to make her heart content.
Xi Yuechen didn’t disappoint. Since Su Ruo moved his books to the bedroom, he spent most of his reading time there, so they were truly “together from morning till night.”
He wasn’t a man of many words. Now, as usual, he quietly flipped through the pages, seemingly absorbed—or maybe not.
Still, Su Ruo felt awkward. Even Xi Yuechen’s silence seemed, to her, like a deliberate act to avoid the earlier embarrassment.
The more he didn’t speak, the more uneasy she felt. She blinked and racked her brain, trying to find a topic to break the strange silence.
“Commander,” she finally called. She realized her voice was slightly hoarse, as if her vocal cords hadn’t adjusted to speaking after a long silence, and she quickly cleared her throat.
Xi Yuechen looked over, his gaze as ordinary as ever, but Su Ruo felt it was unusually focused, making her heart race.
“Uh… you said you were transferred to B City, right? Or is it still your original unit?”
A spark of inspiration hit Su Ruo. She had found a topic and quickly asked, wanting to clarify the situation anyway.
“Yes. It’s still my original unit.”
Xi Yuechen put down the magazine and nodded in response.
The transfer order was interesting. Given his achievements in D Province, he should have been promoted, but after the commendation meeting, he was sent back to his original post, still serving as the commander of the Reinforcement Regiment.
Xi Yuechen had no objections to this order, but the members of the regiment were ecstatic. Their iron-willed commander was returning, ready to lead them through new legendary feats!
When Xi Yuechen left for D Province, the soldiers had sent him off with great fanfare, which was silently ignored by everyone. After a few months, their commander returned, which was slightly awkward—but who cared? Xi Yuechen had led them for a long time; they had formed bonds and mutual understanding. More importantly, he could continue guiding them toward glory. In the military, every man had ambitions, and these soldiers were thrilled.
For Xi Yuechen, returning to lead the Reinforcement Regiment wasn’t bad either. He was familiar with them, knew how to handle the regiment, and had even personally trained them.
Why didn’t higher-ups promote him further? It made sense upon reflection.
When Su Feng heard that his son-in-law was returning to the Reinforcement Regiment, he paused, then smiled and shook his head, completely at ease.
Considering how highly he valued Xi Yuechen, why was he so unconcerned about this critical point in Xi Yuechen’s military career?
There was only one reason: this move didn’t affect Xi Yuechen’s future. Otherwise, he would have been anxious.
Although Su Feng rarely interfered with Xi Yuechen’s affairs, he could see that the transfer had been carefully considered.
Given Xi Yuechen’s achievements in D Province, he could have been promoted in rank and position. Yet at the recent commendation ceremony, while many in the action group received promotions along with awards, Xi Yuechen only received commendations—no rank or positional changes.
He was already a colonel at a young age—a rarity nationwide. Further promotion would mean general, but there were virtually no generals at that age in the country.
Although considered a legend, becoming a general so young would be too extraordinary, inviting criticism and controversy.
Thus, the higher-ups deliberately held back this achievement, letting him remain a colonel, continue training, and gain more experience. Xi Yuechen’s talent and ability ensured that future achievements would secure him the general’s rank eventually, at the right time, without controversy.
He had only been a colonel for a short while, and there was no rush.
Su Feng understood the reasoning and wasn’t worried. If Xi Yuechen had been promoted too quickly, he might have been concerned. As the saying goes, “The tall tree catches the wind.” His young son-in-law being a colonel already drew attention; general would be far too much. Better to gain experience first.
Xi Yuechen himself remained calm. Rank or title didn’t matter; he just focused on doing his job well.
Xi Jian’an, upon learning this, also smiled without comment.
Everyone understood the nuances. Whether Xi Yuechen was being nurtured or restrained, a single order made it clear. For young people, gaining experience steadily was the safest approach.
Even Zhou Tingzhang understood and felt relieved. If nothing went wrong, Xi Yuechen’s path was bound for brilliance.
But Su Ruo had no idea of these subtleties. Even if she had been told, she wouldn’t have pried. As long as nothing went wrong, why worry? And as long as Xi Yuechen was safe, fame and fortune were meaningless—nothing compared to the person in front of her. The rest could be left to fate. She was content knowing her commander did his best, working diligently for that inner peace.
Thus, Su Ruo was genuinely happy. She didn’t care about the reasons or pros and cons behind Xi Yuechen’s return. All that mattered was that he was in B City, no longer apart from her.
Though she didn’t voice it, being separated from him had been bitter. As their feelings deepened, parting became harder. So, how could she not be happy about the transfer?
“It’s really nice.”
Her heart swirled with emotion, yet she only said it softly while looking at Xi Yuechen’s stern face—whether for him or herself, she didn’t know.
Seeing her, a trace of tenderness appeared in Xi Yuechen’s eyes, softening his rugged features. He had no objections to returning to the Reinforcement Regiment, obeying orders fully, but seeing Su Ruo’s happiness brought him unexpected warmth. For the first time, he even felt satisfaction with his own transfer order.
This was the only transfer order that satisfied Su Ruo. Xi Yuechen, surprisingly, also had feelings about it. The arrangement, in fact, was quite pleasant.
Su Ruo didn’t notice, but she had already forgotten the earlier incident. All that remained was the warmth of not having to be apart from her commander, and her delicate face brightened, radiant like a blooming flower.
