Since the transfer order had been issued, Xi Yuechen naturally had no reason to stay home any longer and returned to his original unit the next day.
After happily sending him off, Su Ruo hummed a tune and swayed into the living room.
Shen Liang was playing with Xi Zi and, seeing Su Ruo in such high spirits, couldn’t help but smile. “Look at you, so happy, you’ve lost all your composure.”
Su Ruo wasn’t embarrassed at all; she grinned. “Yes, the weather’s nice today, the sun is shining—it makes one feel like their heart is blooming.”
Shen Liang cast her a sideways glance at the cheerful Su Ruo and snorted. “Yesterday you were frowning, and today your heart’s blooming—do you think I can’t see through that?”
Of course, she already knew about her son being transferred back to B City. But unlike Ruo, she wasn’t as “broad-minded.” After confirming with Xi Jian’an that there was nothing wrong with her son being returned to his original post, she relaxed.
Since it wouldn’t affect his future, being in B City was actually better. At home, things were more convenient, and more importantly, the young couple could meet from time to time.
“Hehe, Mom, you’re amazing! Sharp-eyed as ever!” Su Ruo sat down in front of Shen Liang, squinting with a big laugh.
Knowing is knowing. Ruo was simply happy because of the commander, and there was nothing to hide. Besides, now anyone with eyes could see why she was so overjoyed.
Shen Liang lowered her head to continue watching her grandson but smiled as she said, “You chatterbox, already a mother and still so playful.”
Su Ruo leaned closer, gazing at the little face increasingly resembling Xi Yuechen. Her eyes softened with tenderness. “This is called being positive and optimistic—being a mother means staying young at heart.”
“Bring my little treasure over so I can see him! Where is he?”
At that moment, a loud, strong voice came from the doorway. Hearing it, Su Ruo immediately knew who it was.
“He’s here, Grandpa.”
“Oh, Ruo Ruo too?” The old man smiled as he called out, recognizing her voice.
“Yes,” Su Ruo smiled and quickly said, “He just woke up. Grandpa, come hold him.”
Hearing that his little darling was awake, the old man’s face lit up with joy. He hurried over, quickening his pace.
It wasn’t surprising that he was so delighted. Xi Zi really could sleep—quiet all day, and even when awake, he only moved his arms and legs softly, his big watery eyes scanning the surroundings, lips tightly pursed, looking rather serious.
Although the old man spent a lot of time on Xi Zi daily, the baby rarely opened his eyes. This made the old man feel both loving and pitying. Sometimes he considered waking him, but seeing Xi Zi’s cute, chubby sleeping face, he couldn’t bring himself to do it. So he stayed by his side, motionless, watching the sleeping little face.
Now that Xi Zi was awake, how could he not be overjoyed? His face was blooming with smiles.
Su Ruo secretly chuckled at the sight and glanced at Shen Liang, who was also shaking her head with a smile.
“Oh my, in just a short while, my little one has become even cuter.”
The old man wanted to poke Xi Zi’s little face but remembered he hadn’t washed his hands after coming from outside, so he held back, just admiring his grandchild’s delicate features.
Watching the scene, Su Ruo sighed inwardly. This little one is already the center of everyone’s attention—who knows what he’ll be like when he grows up. Hopefully not a spoiled playboy.
The three of them sat around Xi Zi for a while longer. After being satisfied, the old man told Su Ruo to put him down for a rest and went back to his own room.
Once he left, Shen Liang turned to Su Ruo. “Let’s go to our room. I have something I want to discuss with you.”
Su Ruo nodded and wondered what her mother-in-law might say.
Upstairs, she carefully placed the sleeping Xi Zi on the bed and covered him with a light blanket before softly asking Shen Liang,
“What is it, Mom?”
Shen Liang sat on the sofa, smiling and beckoning her over. “Come sit. It’s nothing serious, just a casual chat.”
Su Ruo walked over and tilted her head to look at her smiling mother-in-law. “Can we talk now?”
“The transfer order for Yuechen is out. Since it’s back to his original unit, it’s not far. What are your plans?”
Shen Liang hesitated for a moment before speaking. She had thought about this carefully. She initially considered letting Su Ruo follow Xi Yuechen to the military post for half a year, once he could take care of Xi Zi, if he were transferred away. But since he’s still in B City, just a few hours’ drive away, she thought it might not be necessary for Su Ruo to go.
Honestly, she didn’t want to part with her grandson, and she also worried about Ruo—a young girl herself—taking care of a child.
But thinking of her son, she couldn’t bear it either. He had always been solitary, didn’t like socializing, and usually spent his days alone. Ruo’s presence was a blessing. If she kept them apart for her own sake, it would be unfair.
Most importantly, Xi Yuechen is willing to interact with Ruo, and their relationship is going well. She couldn’t ruin it. Xi Yuechen, being older, only just had a son—he should nurture their father-son bond from the start. Otherwise, he might grow up detached, like a superior to a subordinate.
So, after weighing the options, Shen Liang decided to ask Su Ruo. Ultimately, it was Ruo’s choice whether to follow the military. Even if Xi Yuechen is in B City, Ruo can’t keep running to the unit daily. If they want to cultivate both their marital and father-son bonds, it’s best to live nearby.
If Su Ruo decided to follow, it was fine; they could occasionally visit Xi Zi.
Thus, whatever decision Su Ruo made needed prior discussion. Following the military wasn’t something done on a whim; preparation was necessary.
Su Ruo lowered her eyes, biting her lip, deep in thought. Indeed, Xi Yuechen was in B City, only a few hours away. While her mother-in-law had suggested following him if he were transferred elsewhere, now that he was local, she needed to consider her own wishes.
Looking at the situation logically, she didn’t need to follow the military. But… she didn’t want to be apart from Xi Yuechen, not even for a day.
Her desire to be with him overpowered any thoughts of reason or propriety. If she didn’t go, Yuechen would be alone, and that wouldn’t feel right.
“Mom, once Xi Zi grows a little, I’ll follow the military. Even though Yuechen is in B City, it’s better to have someone there to help.”
Once she made up her mind, she expressed it clearly, though she still felt a little anxious, worried Shen Liang might think her selfish or dramatic.
Unexpectedly, Shen Liang smiled in relief. “Alright, if you want to follow, then follow. In half a year, when Xi Zi is older, you can take him to the unit. It’s not good for Yuechen to be alone.”
Su Ruo was momentarily surprised but quickly regained composure, nodding enthusiastically. Her face shone like sunlight.
Honestly, she was a bit shocked. She knew Shen Liang was always reasonable, but she didn’t expect her to be so agreeable. She had thought following Xi Yuechen to a distant post was the limit, yet now, even with him nearby, she could still follow.
Though Shen Liang’s willingness likely stemmed from concern for Xi Yuechen, it didn’t dampen Su Ruo’s excitement. Thinking that in a few months, the three of them would finally be reunited, her heart trembled with joy.
Seeing Su Ruo so happy, Shen Liang smiled. Well, grandchildren have their own blessings. As long as they were happy, the elders would naturally support them.
“Alright, don’t get too excited yet. Since you’ve decided to follow the military, you need to prepare. Don’t wait until the last minute and panic because of what you don’t know. From now on, you have to carefully learn how to take care of a child, understand?”
Once the decision was made, Shen Liang started instructing Su Ruo earnestly. Su Ruo was still young herself, so she needed proper guidance to care for such a small child. She had to train Ruo now, so when they moved to Yuechen’s place, she’d handle things smoothly without panicking.
“I know! I’ll learn properly. Don’t worry, Grandpa won’t be wronged at all.”
Su Ruo’s spirits were even higher now than before. Her words seemed dripping with honey, sweet beyond measure.
