“What?!”

Everyone in the room was drawn to the exclamation and turned to look.

Their normally unflappable captain suddenly appeared completely shocked, his face pale as iron. He stood up and strode out, fast as lightning—gone in the blink of an eye.

Who had called? And what was said that could shake Captain Xi, usually as cold as ice, so badly?

The team members exchanged glances, curiosity brimming. What on earth had happened?

These people were part of the task force attending Han Zhiyuan’s funeral. Since only half the team had come, the room wasn’t too crowded.

It was already past midnight. They hadn’t slept all night, talking together in the hotel room.

Han Zhiyuan’s family had been informed of his death the very night he died, so by the time the team arrived, his family had already prepared the funeral overnight. It was a simple cremation, carried out quickly and quietly.

His family didn’t want any fuss. With him gone, there was no need for unnecessary ceremony—they just wanted him laid to rest peacefully.

Even though the funeral was brief, the teammates who had fought alongside him couldn’t relax. Their hearts were heavy, especially after witnessing the gut-wrenching grief of Han Zhiyuan’s parents. It was a pain that lingered long after the ceremony ended.

That night, no one felt like sleeping. They gathered in one room and talked through the night.

After the funeral, the task force was nearly done. With their mission completed, the team had no further purpose. Everyone would eventually go their separate ways, and after so much time spent together, parting felt bittersweet.

In the early hours, Xi Yuechen entered their room to inform them that he would head to City B at dawn. Once the task force arrived there, they could contact him.

For some reason, Xi Yuechen had been uneasy ever since that look from Bai Xiong earlier, a vague sense of foreboding gnawing at him all night. Something bad seemed imminent.

After finishing his work, Xi Yuechen returned to the hotel, intending to call Su Ruo. It had been several days since he last contacted the young woman, and now with a moment to spare, he missed her. Hearing her voice might ease the restless anxiety churning in his chest.

Yet as he picked up the phone, he glanced at the time and decided against it. It was too late; she must be asleep. No need to disturb her—he would see her tomorrow anyway.

Alone in his room, Xi Yuechen couldn’t sleep. These past days had kept him in a state of constant tension. He hadn’t rested, especially last night and tonight. Even so, his body seemed immune to fatigue; he didn’t feel tired at all.

His unease was confirmed shortly after he stepped into the team’s room.

Xi Jian’an called, telling him that Su Ruo had been kidnapped and was missing.

At that moment, Xi Yuechen’s heart felt as if it had been wrenched violently, his breath catching painfully.

Kidnapped? By whom? And how could they not find her? With so many people searching, how could they lose one person?!

There was no time to ask further. Xi Yuechen hung up quickly. There was nothing more to ask—Xi Jian’an knew nothing beyond that either.

His hands trembled slightly. Su Ruo, about to give birth, had been kidnapped—and there was still no news of her whereabouts…

His mind was in chaos. He even found himself blaming his family—why hadn’t they informed him immediately?

The more he thought, the more agitated he became. Taking a deep breath, he forced himself to focus. He couldn’t panic now!

He couldn’t wait any longer—he had to go back immediately!

Xi Yuechen was in complete disarray. He didn’t even tell the team members and hastily gathered his belongings before leaving.

The poor team members were still waiting for their captain’s return, completely unaware he had left on his own.

Xi Yuechen didn’t even check for flights to City B. He called Su Feng directly to arrange a plane.

Su Feng didn’t question him, immediately setting up a military aircraft. With his daughter missing, personal rules and procedures didn’t matter—he’d use whatever power he had!

Everyone was frantic, hearts sinking further with each passing moment. The kidnappers hadn’t contacted them, making it clear this wasn’t about money. That realization only increased their anxiety.

Su Ruo’s belly was so big. Who would do this? What did they want? Was she in danger?

By now, it was apparent Su Ruo might no longer be in City B. They had deployed so many forces and still couldn’t find her—if not outside the city, where else could she be?

Zhang Huaqing was near breaking point. They still couldn’t find her—would anything happen to her daughter? Those bastards! How could Ruo Ruo have angered them?

At that moment, Xi Jian’an’s phone rang, drawing everyone’s attention in the living room.

Everyone had gathered at the Su residence for convenience, allowing them to coordinate immediately if any clues appeared.

Xi Jian’an and Su Feng were anxious, ignoring the risk of drawing attention. The living room had been lit all night, phones constantly ringing.

Now, when Xi Jian’an’s phone rang, everyone’s eyes brightened—could this be news?

“Interrogate them immediately! Open their mouths by any means! Move fast, and notify me as soon as there’s news!” Xi Jian’an ordered, eyes flashing with severity.

“Any news?” Shen Liang asked urgently after Xi Jian’an hung up.

“They’re the two kidnappers who abandoned the car. They’ve been found and are being questioned,” Xi Jian’an replied, still worried. If these two had been caught, what about the others? Hopefully, they’d get information soon.

“Tell them to hurry! We must find out Ruo Ruo’s whereabouts! My poor daughter—who knows how she is…” Zhang Huaqing sobbed, her eyes red, fingers tightly intertwined. The night had almost driven her to collapse.

“I’ve told them—”

Xi Jian’an hadn’t finished when another ringtone sounded.

“It’s Ruo Ruo’s!” Zhang Huaqing cried out, eyes darting to Su Ruo’s bag.

When Su Heng returned, he had brought Su Ruo’s bag with him, now sitting next to Zhang Huaqing. No one expected her phone to ring—they were all surprised.

Who could be calling Ruo Ruo now? Everyone who knew about the kidnapping already knew, so no one should be calling her—especially at this hour.

Now… there was only one possibility.

Everyone held their breath. Su Heng and He Wen clenched their fingers, eyes fixed on Su Ruo’s bag.

Amid all the watchful eyes, Zhang Huaqing opened Su Ruo’s bag and pulled out the phone. It was an unknown number.

Trembling fingers swiped gently, and the call connected.

“Who is this?”

Zhang Huaqing forced her voice steady, asking urgently.

“Hello, may I speak to Su Ruo’s family?”

The caller was Hong Shirong. He stood outside the emergency room, anxiously waiting, palms sweaty.

When Su Ruo arrived at the hospital, her wheelchair was soaked in blood. Already unconscious, she had closed eyes and pale lips, lowly murmuring, her cheeks sweaty from pain.

Hong Shirong had no choice—these weren’t ordinary injuries, and he couldn’t stop the bleeding. He had to urge Chen Shao to work faster.

As soon as Su Ruo reached the hospital, she was taken to the ER. The doctor’s grave expression and the blood-soaked lower half of her body shocked Hong Shirong. What if something happened to her child?

After waiting outside for a while, he remembered he had to contact her family. He fumbled for his phone.

Looking at her condition, it was obvious she had been kidnapped. Mentioning kidnapping made Hong Shirong feel uneasy, recalling his own past misdeeds. He hadn’t been so extreme—he hadn’t taken her out of town or threatened her life.

He didn’t know exactly how he felt about Su Ruo now, perhaps some lingering guilt. Seeing her in such pain made his heart ache.

Sighing, he realized there was no use dwelling on it. He owed her anyway, and this was his chance to make amends.

With her condition critical, he needed to notify her family so they wouldn’t worry if she went missing.

But he didn’t know her family’s phone number. How could he contact them?

Suddenly, an idea came to him. Hesitating briefly, he dialed a number—the number of Su Ruo’s phone.

He had noted it the last time he kidnapped her. He hadn’t deleted it from his contacts, though he never called.

It was a gamble, but the call connected. Fortunately, it was indeed a family member, otherwise he wouldn’t have known how to reach them.

Relieved, Hong Shirong glanced at the closed ER doors and continued speaking into the phone.
