Su Ruo slid Xi Yuechen’s hand over her prominently rounded belly, a sweet smile on her face.
Xi Yuechen let Su Ruo move his hand as she wished. His expression remained calm, yet the slightly tense, anticipatory look in his eyes completely betrayed his inner feelings.
“Baby, move a little, say hello to your dad,” Su Ruo said, lowering her head to look at her belly, the corners of her lips curving up slightly.
“Dad…” Those two words fell like a stone into the calm lake of Xi Yuechen’s heart, sending ripples across his entire being that refused to settle.
Xi Yuechen felt a surge of complex emotions, too many to put into words—curiosity, emotion, anticipation… His mind was entirely disturbed by the word “dad.”
An unprecedentedly strange sensation washed over all his senses, and he began to explore her belly more carefully with his hands.
Perhaps it was Su Ruo’s words, or perhaps the baby really felt that its father was touching it—her once-quiet belly suddenly moved again.
“Ah, it moved, it moved!” Su Ruo whispered in surprise, guiding Xi Yuechen’s hand to the spot where the movement was. “Here, Chief, wait a moment… there, it moved!”
As soon as she spoke, the spot under Xi Yuechen’s hand indeed bulged slightly again, tracing a gentle arc before settling back down.
This time, the sensation was more vivid. Under Xi Yuechen’s palm, the little one seemed to be playfully testing the waters, separated by Su Ruo’s belly but so real in touch, so intense in feeling.
Xi Yuechen’s palm trembled involuntarily, then pressed against her belly again, patiently waiting for the next movement.
“That might have been the baby’s hand… or maybe its foot. It’s turning over, probably bored,” Su Ruo said, lightly tapping his knuckles with her fingers, smiling.
“Turning over? Already?” Xi Yuechen was surprised. Such a tiny thing, yet it could move by itself?
“Yes, now it can move on its own. Fetal movements are just it moving inside. The little one must be eager to come out,” Su Ruo said softly, her voice happy, almost tender.
“Your belly is so big. Is it hard for you?” Xi Yuechen kept his hand on her belly, feeling a twinge of sympathy. Such a delicate woman, carrying a life inside for him—how exhausting that must be.
“No, not hard at all. I’m happy to carry our child for you, Chief. I like it,” Su Ruo said, sensing the concern in his voice, her heart softening.
I willingly endure this for you. Besides, this is our child. How could it be burdensome when I love it so much? All I want is your heart.
Xi Yuechen knew she was speaking the truth. Moved, his heart warmed, he felt lucky once again—this wonderful woman is my wife.
The baby moved again under Xi Yuechen’s palm, as if greeting its father.
“See, the baby knows dad is out there. Look, it’s moving right toward you,” Su Ruo said, noticing most of the movements were under Xi Yuechen’s hand. Could it really be greeting its dad?
Her baby was smart—even so small, it knew to say hello to dad.
“Does it move like this often?” Xi Yuechen asked, as Su Ruo basked in her pride.
“Sometimes, sometimes quietly not at all,” Su Ruo turned to him, her eyes soft. “The first movement was right after you left last month.”
She laughed softly, remembering the first time she felt it. Lying in a rocking chair by the window, enjoying the sun, she was startled by the sudden movement in her belly.
At first, she thought it was an illusion, but then it moved clearly, sliding across her belly, startling her enough to freeze and shout, “Mom! Mom, come quickly!”
Her shrill, trembling voice alarmed Shen Liang, who rushed over, only to see her lying still, pale-faced but otherwise fine.
“What happened? Are you okay?” Shen Liang asked anxiously.
“My belly… it moved!” Su Ruo’s voice trembled.
“Moved? Ah, that’s fetal movement! I told you!” Shen Liang couldn’t help but laugh.
Su Ruo was still scared. “Really? It’s normal?”
“Yes, it’s a good thing. It means the baby is healthy,” Shen Liang reassured, sitting beside her and patting her hand. “Relax, don’t be so tense.”
Confirming it was normal, Su Ruo still couldn’t fully relax, her gaze wary of her belly, afraid of seeing another sudden bulge.
Over a few days, she got used to the movements, shifting from initial fear to calm enjoyment, hands constantly resting on her belly.
“Can I touch?” Xi Yuehui asked hesitantly.
“Yes, go ahead, aren’t you curious? Feel it,” Su Ruo said casually. She saw no reason to hide it from her little uncle.
Xi Yuehui hesitated—she was her childhood friend but also his sister-in-law. He couldn’t be too casual.
“Touch if you want, but don’t stare at my belly all the time. Wait until the baby is born,” Su Ruo said, pretending to leave.
“Wait, just once,” Xi Yuehui said, curiosity winning.
He carefully placed his palm on her belly, nervous yet excited.
“Come on, baby, see your uncle? Wave your little fists,” Su Ruo encouraged, teasing the baby to let Xi Yuehui feel its movement.
But after a while, the belly remained still. Disappointed, Xi Yuehui grumbled, “Doesn’t like me as an uncle, huh? Not even a little movement for me.”
Su Ruo rolled her eyes. “So small, how could it fart? Were you raised farting in the womb?” She quickly stopped, not wanting to involve her mother-in-law.
Xi Yuehui chuckled. “Maybe I was gifted at birth, but why isn’t it moving?”
“Fetal movement isn’t continuous. Occasionally it moves. Seems you’re not lucky enough to feel the baby yet,” Su Ruo said with mock lament.
A few days later, she finally let him feel it, and the little one’s life stirred under his hand. Xi Yuehui’s joy was boundless.
