“Sir?”
Su Ruo asked tentatively, clearly unable to believe it—Xi Yuechen had suddenly appeared before her.
“Mm, I’m back.” Xi Yuechen walked toward Su Ruo, nodding softly.
It wasn’t until Xi Yuechen reached her that Su Ruo finally believed the scene was real. Unable to contain herself any longer, she threw herself into his arms, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably.
Seeing Su Ruo so heavily pregnant and now recklessly lunging at him, Xi Yuechen’s face flickered with concern. He quickly extended his hands to catch her, making sure her belly didn’t bump into him.
Su Ruo stayed pressed against Xi Yuechen, silent, her face snug against his chest, choking back sobs while letting her tears and sniffles soak his clothes.
Xi Yuechen shook his head helplessly, lifting a hand to gently pat her shoulder, speaking softly, “Don’t cry, okay? Listen to me.”
His voice was calm and gentle, almost coaxing her.
As always, Xi Yuechen disliked seeing Su Ruo cry. But as her belly grew, her tear glands seemed to grow more active as well. After all, it was only natural for her to burst into tears when suddenly confronted by the person she had longed for day and night.
Shen Liang, having finished tidying up in the kitchen, came out intending to call Su Ruo for lunch.
Unexpectedly, as she stepped into the living room, she saw the two of them embracing in the garden and was startled. Upon taking a closer look, she couldn’t help but exclaim in surprise, “Yuechen?!”
Su Ruo, still buried in Xi Yuechen’s chest, was both shocked and embarrassed by her mother-in-law’s sudden voice. She quickly straightened up and wiped away her tears.
After Su Ruo stood upright, Xi Yuechen turned to the equally surprised Shen Liang and nodded, “Mom.”
Su Ruo was hidden behind Xi Yuechen’s broad frame, so Shen Liang didn’t see her in this disheveled state and quietly relaxed. She quickly wiped her eyes and adjusted her mood—she wasn’t about to let her mother-in-law see her like this, how dramatic would that look…
“Yuechen, how come you’re back so suddenly?” Shen Liang quickly recovered and asked, both happy and curious.
“The unit hasn’t been too busy lately, so I took leave.” Xi Yuechen, never one to lie, spoke plainly with no hint of guilt.
“Really? That’s wonderful! Can you stay for a few days this time?” Shen Liang’s eyes lit up; she had been wondering when Yuechen could come home.
By now, Su Ruo’s emotions had mostly settled. She took a deep breath, switched her expression to a smile, and stepped out from behind Xi Yuechen.
“Mom.”
Seeing Su Ruo like this, Shen Liang knew she had been crying—her red eyes, the obvious wet patch on her son’s clothes. She pretended not to notice, smiling even more warmly.
“Lunch is ready. Come eat quickly.”
At that moment, Xi Jian’an also returned from work. Seeing Xi Yuechen unexpectedly home, he looked surprised.
“How come you’re back? Finished with work?”
Xi Yuechen stood and nodded, “Mm. Nothing pressing for now.”
That was all he said, and Xi Jian’an didn’t press further, simply nodding. “Good, two days at home to rest is fine.”
“Yes.” Xi Yuechen answered succinctly.
Su Ruo watched this scene and felt a sudden urge to laugh. The father and son’s conversation was so serious and formal, like a superior talking to a subordinate, not a bit like an ordinary father-son chat.
If the commander stays this ice-cold, would their conversations be the same if she gave birth to a son in the future?
She quickly shook her head, dismissing the image she had painted in her mind—it was far too unromantic.
“All right, all right. Yuechen just got back—why interrogate him? Let’s eat.” Shen Liang served everyone a bowl of rice, teasing Xi Jian’an a little—her son had just returned and was already questioning everything. Not hungry right after the plane ride, right?
At Shen Liang’s words, Xi Jian’an didn’t get annoyed, nodding in agreement, “Mm, let’s eat.”
After lunch, everyone sat in the living room, talking casually. Most of the questions came from Shen Liang, and Xi Yuechen simply answered. Xi Jian’an and Su Ruo mostly just listened.
In this environment, Xi Jian’an wouldn’t pry further, and they certainly wouldn’t chat like ordinary father and son, so they remained quiet.
Su Ruo occasionally interjected but didn’t speak much. She had many things she wanted to say to Xi Yuechen, but this wasn’t the place—it was private talk accumulated over countless days and nights.
Today, Xi Yuehui and the old man hadn’t returned home for lunch—Xi Yuehui had gone out early, and the old man had gone to meet his chess friends, telling them not to wait for him. Since the old man was so happy, no one stopped him.
Shen Liang asked for a while, then stopped, seeing Su Ruo happily sitting there. Normally, she would be napping at this hour, but today she wasn’t—Shen Liang guessed why.
After a while, having nothing else to say, Shen Liang generously decided to let Xi Yuechen and Su Ruo have some private time together. “I’m a bit tired. You two go rest in your room. Yuechen, you just got off the plane—take a nap. We’ll talk tonight.”
Su Ruo secretly glanced at her mother-in-law, trying to read her expression. She felt a hint of teasing in the words.
Xi Yuechen promptly stood up. Su Ruo, seeing nothing unusual, secretly chuckled at her own over-sensitivity, and stood as well, smiling at Xi Jian’an and Shen Liang: “We’ll head back to the room first. You both should rest too.”
Once in the room, Su Ruo fell silent again, feeling an urge to say countless things but unsure where to start, just quietly staring at Xi Yuechen.
Xi Yuechen furrowed his brows, curious, “What’s wrong?”
Su Ruo puffed her cheeks, smiled, and shook her head, still looking at him.
One month apart, and this little woman had become even more childlike. Silly and innocent, Xi Yuechen thought to himself.
“All right, sleep now.” Xi Yuechen gave the order. He knew Su Ruo’s habit of napping.
“Sir, will you sleep too?” Su Ruo tilted her head.
Xi Yuechen wasn’t used to naps due to his long-standing lifestyle. But seeing Su Ruo’s bright, expectant eyes, he couldn’t help but nod.
“Mm, I’ll rest a bit too.”
Su Ruo was overjoyed. She didn’t know how to start speaking her many thoughts, so she just wanted to snuggle against Xi Yuechen and enjoy his presence.
Xi Yuechen had been thinking of her too. Holding her now, he finally felt that empty space in his heart fill up.
Su Ruo, in good spirits, quickly fell asleep, her breathing slow and steady.
Xi Yuechen couldn’t sleep. When she drifted off, he placed his hand on her high, rounded belly, gently stroking it. This small space was nurturing a life?
Even Xi Yuechen, calm and rational by nature, was now a first-time father. Faced with the woman he loved carrying his child, he was both curious and moved.
His broad hand stroked her belly gently, his expression soft and serene. But suddenly, he froze, his hand still, staring at her belly with wide-eyed astonishment.
What could have startled the usually composed and cool Colonel Xi Yuechen so?
“Ruo Ruo. Ruo Ruo, wake up.”
Su Ruo, just comfortable in sleep, was shaken awake by Xi Yuechen’s urgent voice, filled with an unfamiliar anxiety.
Instantly alert, she asked, “What’s wrong?”
Xi Yuechen’s expression was still strange, nervous and stiff. Su Ruo had never seen him like this and thought something serious had happened. She didn’t even notice his hand on her belly.
“Just now… your belly seemed to move?”
Seeing that everything seemed fine, Xi Yuechen doubted if he had imagined it—but the sensation had been unmistakable. His tone wavered with confusion.
Su Ruo couldn’t help but giggle. The great, cold, composed Colonel Xi Yuechen had been completely startled—by fetal movement.
Too cute. She hadn’t expected the commander to be scared like this. She restrained her laughter carefully, so as not to hurt her belly, tears escaping her eyes.
Xi Yuechen now realized his earlier reaction might have seemed funny. He calmed down and looked at the nearly laughing Su Ruo with a cool, detached expression. “Is this really that funny?”
Su Ruo, still teary-eyed, tried to suppress her laughter, taking deep breaths so as not to embarrass the commander further.
Once she finally calmed down, she peeked at Xi Yuechen’s face again and couldn’t hold it anymore, giggling softly. To prevent bursting out again, she buried her face in his chest.
“Sir, that… that was… fetal movement!” Su Ruo said between breaths, still smiling.
Fetal movement? The baby in her belly was moving? Xi Yuechen raised his eyebrows in surprise, focusing on her belly.
His hand instinctively moved to explore. Su Ruo guided his large hand, letting it feel the movement.
“Here, feel again. The baby is saying hello to daddy.”
