“Hey…”

“Where did you go?”

Oh right, Su Ruo had snuck out without telling Xi Yuechen…

Xi Yuechen’s voice on the phone was deep and slightly magnetic. Hearing his voice actually calmed Su Ruo down. Why panic? She wasn’t out doing anything bad.

“I’m at Mu You with He Wen and the others.”

There was a brief silence on the other end before Xi Yuechen finally spoke. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

Feeling a bit guilty, Su Ruo chuckled awkwardly. “I saw you reading, so I didn’t want to disturb you.”

Another silence. Just as Su Ruo was debating whether to hang up, Xi Yuechen’s voice came through.

“I’ll come pick you up later. We’re having dinner at the compound tonight.”

Before Su Ruo could say anything, the call ended. She rolled her eyes at her phone. So bossy!

Xi Yuechen had come out of his study and didn’t see Su Ruo. He assumed she was asleep in the bedroom and didn’t think much of it. It wasn’t until quite some time later that he realized she wasn’t home at all.

The fact that Su Ruo had left without saying anything—whether due to her personality or some other reason—didn’t sit well with him. It wasn’t a strong feeling, but it was like a tiny bump on an otherwise smooth surface. Subtle, but impossible to ignore.

He glanced around the house, feeling an unusual sense of emptiness. Frowning slightly, he picked up his phone to call her—only to realize a rather frustrating fact. He didn’t know her number.

That realization made his frown deepen.

“Yuehui, is Su Ruo with you guys? Send me her number.” Where else could she be? If not at the Su family’s place, then she was with her friends.

“Yeah, she’s with us. Sure, I’ll send it right over. Hehe.” Xi Yuehui’s voice was filled with amusement.

A moment later, Xi Yuechen stared at the number his brother sent. His fingers moved slowly as he saved it to his phone.

In truth, he had already memorized the number at first glance, but he still saved it. His phone was practically useless—he rarely needed it. Shen Liang had insisted he carry one, saying it would make it easier to stay in touch. “You barely come home all year. At least let us hear your voice sometimes.” Even so, Xi Yuechen had barely used it. The numbers he did need were all stored in his mind.

But this time, for some reason, he saved Su Ruo’s number. And just like that, she became the only contact in his phone, labeled formally as: Su Ruo.

Satisfied, he dialed the number.

After hanging up, Xi Yuechen grabbed his car keys and headed out. It was 5:20 PM—just enough time to drive to Mu You and make it back to the compound in time for dinner.

The car he was driving belonged to Xi Yuehui. Since his younger brother had been using his sports car lately, the off-road vehicle had been left for him. Starting the engine, Xi Yuechen smoothly pulled into the bustling streets, his cold, commanding aura a perfect match for the rugged SUV.

Su Ruo stared at her phone, dumbfounded. So bossy! Was she his subordinate or something?

But… why were they having dinner at the compound?

If it were at her own home, she’d be happy to go, but clearly, that wasn’t the case.

Is this like an ugly daughter-in-law finally meeting the in-laws…?

Frowning, Su Ruo opened the door to the private room, distracted as she walked toward the sofa against the wall.

However, as reality had proven time and time again—whatever you do, you should always pay full attention. Otherwise, when bad luck strikes… it really strikes hard.

“Ah—!”

Another blood-curdling scream echoed. Su Ruo had once again fallen, hitting the back of her head.

“Ruoruo!”

“Sister-in-law!”

“Su Ruo!”

Pain shot through her skull as frantic voices rang in her ears. Disoriented, she could barely make sense of the noise.

Damn it! Who the hell leaves bottles lying around on the floor?!

Xi Yuehui’s face paled when he saw Su Ruo collapse. And she hit the back of her head again. She had only just recovered! His heart turned ice-cold.

Without hesitation, he rushed over, scooped her up, and sprinted out. The others abandoned their drinks and followed, their expressions grim and their steps frantic.

He Wen was both shocked and terrified. She just recovered, and now she hit the same spot again… what if… She didn’t dare finish the thought. Her face went ghostly white as she sprinted behind Xi Yuehui, even shoving aside Yang Yu in her panic.

Yang Yu barely avoided falling and could only watch as the group of familiar troublemakers stormed out of Mu You like a raging army. He wisely kept his mouth shut and turned to pacify the curious onlookers with a smile.

“Sister-in-law, Su Ruo! Are you okay?”

Somewhere in her hazy state, Su Ruo heard someone speaking. Focusing on the voice, she realized it was her little brother-in-law, Xi Yuehui.

“I don’t feel okay… not at all… Am I going to die again?”

She gasped weakly, speaking in a barely audible voice, her tone laced with both pain and frustration.

Seriously?! If Heaven has a problem with me, just take me already! Why toy with me like this? How many times am I going to hit my head?! It freaking hurts!

Hearing her words, Xi Yuehui’s heart nearly stopped. He stumbled mid-stride, almost dropping her. Holding her tightly, his heart pounded. If anything happens to her…

His nerves were stretched so tight that he completely misinterpreted her words, only catching the part about “dying.” Face turning pale, he reassured her with a trembling voice. “Hold on, don’t pass out! We’re almost at the hospital! Don’t worry, you’re not going to die!”

Despite her pain, Su Ruo suddenly laughed.

She hadn’t been back for long, yet because of her identity as Su Ruo, she had gained so many things she could never have dreamed of in her past life.

Like Xi Yuehui—panting anxiously beside her.

And the messy, hurried footsteps behind them, all chasing after her.

All because of her.

Su Ruo, who had already accepted the possibility of death without regret, was surprised—why wasn’t she passing out yet? This didn’t quite fit the usual course of events…

The pain in the back of her head grew more intense, yet strangely, her consciousness became even clearer. As she was carried into the car, the pain was so unbearable that she clenched her fists, gritted her teeth, and gasped, ordering Xi Yuehui, who was driving, “Kid, drive faster! This hurts like hell—if I don’t die from the fall, I’ll die from the pain…”

Xi Yuehui couldn’t bother with traffic rules and sped through the streets recklessly. Behind him, several flashy sports cars followed closely, racing through the crowded traffic like a car chase, forcing other vehicles to make way. A police car was also trailing behind, signaling for them to stop due to blatant traffic violations, but there was no way it could keep up with the nimble sports cars, and it was quickly left in the dust.

This group had grown up together in the compound, forging deep bonds since childhood. And now, in the heat of their youth, seeing their friend injured made them genuinely anxious and worried, so they all followed Xi Yuehui straight to the hospital.

“Ruoruo, Ruoruo! Are you okay? Does it hurt? It’s all my fault—just hold on a little longer, we’re almost at the hospital.”

He Wen, who had also gotten into Xi Yuehui’s car with Su Ruo, was filled with guilt as she watched her tremble from the pain, cold sweat breaking out on her forehead. If she hadn’t insisted on dragging her along, none of this would’ve happened.

Su Ruo had no energy left to comfort He Wen. She frowned, trying her best to ignore the throbbing pain in the back of her head, taking deep breaths to steady herself.

Meanwhile, Xi Yuechen was approaching Mu You when he connected his Bluetooth headset and dialed Su Ruo’s number. It rang for a long time, nearly getting cut off, before someone finally answered.

He Wen, who had been trying to comfort Su Ruo, suddenly heard a phone ringing from the bag she had grabbed on instinct. She took it out and, upon seeing the caller ID, let out an uncontrollable gasp.

Yuechen… Xi Yuechen!

“Yue…Yuehui, it’s your brother!” He Wen’s hand trembled as she held the phone toward Xi Yuehui, her face filled with panic.

Xi Yuehui’s eyelid twitched the moment he heard it was his brother. Should he answer? If he did, what should he say? Should he admit that, under their watch, Su Ruo had hit her head again and was now being rushed to the hospital?

Xi Yuehui knew his brother well—if he didn’t answer the call and report the situation honestly, the consequences would be disastrous. Though, to be fair, he was already in deep trouble.

“He Wen, you take the call. I have to drive.”

Without hesitation, Xi Yuehui passed the hot potato to He Wen.

“Huh? But I… What am I supposed to say?”

“The truth,” Xi Yuehui said, making a sharp turn without looking back.

Seeing that Xi Yuehui wasn’t planning to lie, He Wen had no choice but to answer the phone.

“Hello?”

Su Ruo, pale-faced from the pain, listened to their conversation without the strength to roll her eyes.

Xi Yuechen immediately noticed that the voice on the other end wasn’t Su Ruo’s.

“Where’s Su Ruo?”

This was probably the first time He Wen had spoken to the high-and-mighty Xi Yuechen as an adult. Nervous and guilty, she swallowed and carefully replied, “Um… Ruoruo fell. We’re taking her to the hospital…”

“Where did she fall?” Xi Yuechen narrowed his eyes, detecting that things weren’t as simple as they sounded from the panic in He Wen’s voice.

He Wen was nearly in tears. She glanced at Su Ruo, who had her eyes tightly shut, and stammered, “The… the back of her head…”

The moment Xi Yuechen heard that she had hit her head again, a mix of worry and anger surged within him. His voice turned cold. “Which hospital?”

After hanging up, Xi Yuechen pressed his lips into a firm line, his usually calm and composed gaze now filled with evident displeasure. He spun the wheel sharply, speeding off in a cloud of dust.

For once, he had no time to maintain his usual composed demeanor. As soon as he parked, he jumped out of the car and strode swiftly into the hospital.

Inside the hospital room, a group of people stood awkwardly. The moment they saw Xi Yuechen’s cold expression, they instinctively stepped aside, their faces filled with guilt and apprehension. Xi Yuechen recognized them—they were all from the same compound and had always been close with Su Ruo and Xi Yuehui.

“The last injury just healed, and she’s already hurt again? Do you guys have any idea how serious the last one was? Are you trying to get her killed?”

It was the same Doctor Zhang from last time. Seeing Su Ruo injured again so soon after recovering, he was both furious and exasperated, his tone much harsher than before.

Xi Yuechen’s heart skipped a beat at the doctor’s reprimand. He stepped forward and asked, “Doctor, how is she now?”

Doctor Zhang was the head of neurology at the military hospital. Although he had never interacted with Xi Yuechen before, he certainly recognized the famous “Iron-Blooded Commander” of the military district. Now seeing him up close, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of respect. “Commander Xi,” he greeted.

Xi Yuechen gave him a slight nod before turning to look at Su Ruo, who had already passed out, his expression heavy as he asked again, “How is she?”

Hearing his question, Doctor Zhang didn’t waste any more words and got straight to the point. “She’s lucky. The fall wasn’t too bad—just missed her previous injury. Otherwise, the consequences would’ve been much worse…”

Xi Yuechen’s expression eased slightly at this news, though his gaze grew even sharper as he glanced at Xi Yuehui and the others, who averted their eyes nervously. Without further questioning, he turned back to continue speaking with the doctor.

Xi Yuehui, He Wen, and the rest were already filled with guilt. Now, under Xi Yuechen’s intense stare, they felt a cold chill run down their spines. One by one, they lowered their heads, their expressions complicated—none of the arrogance they usually carried remained.

In a quiet corner, Liang Bo’an stood motionless, staring at the unconscious Su Ruo, his face full of distress. He didn’t even glance at Xi Yuechen, who was talking to the doctor.

Xi Yuechen seemed not to notice Liang Bo’an’s unwavering gaze on Su Ruo—or perhaps he did. His eyes flicked slightly in that direction before quickly looking away. He turned his gaze back to Su Ruo, his expression unreadable.

T/N: What if she remembers everything after this fall? Hmm!
