The next day, Yuan Suihu gathered more than a dozen young clansmen, wanting Zhang Jiaohua to examine their aptitude. Yuan Rui, Yuan Suihu’s son, was among them.
“You, run the cultivation method you normally practice,” Zhang Jiaohua said to Yuan Rui.
Naturally, Zhang Jiaohua hoped Yuan Suihu’s son would have talent for cultivation—this would help maintain Yuan Suihu’s prestige and make it easier to carry out his own plans. At present, Yuan Suihu held considerable authority in the Yuan family. But once the reason for the Yuan family’s inability to cultivate was uncovered and a group of cultivators emerged, those people’s abilities might soon surpass Yuan Suihu’s. Whether Yuan Suihu could still effectively control the Yuan family then would be uncertain.
Before coming, Yuan Rui had been sternly warned by his father: he must obey Immortal Zhang’s every instruction. If he angered him, even as Yuan Suihu’s son, he would face severe punishment.
Yuan Rui immediately began cultivating in front of Zhang Jiaohua. Zhang Jiaohua sent his divine sense into Yuan Rui’s meridians, following the flow of spiritual power. To his surprise, Yuan Rui’s meridians were not blocked at all as he had suspected. On the contrary, they were extremely clear, with spiritual power flowing smoothly until it reached the lower dantian. But once there, it was like a stream pouring into a leaky basin—the spiritual power vanished instantly without a trace.
Zhang Jiaohua sensed that Yuan Rui’s lower dantian was full of countless holes, through which the spiritual power leaked away and dispersed back into ambient spiritual energy.
“How could this be?” Zhang Jiaohua was puzzled.
He withdrew his divine sense from Yuan Rui’s dantian.
“You may stop now,” Zhang Jiaohua said.
“Immortal, how is it?” Yuan Suihu asked.
“Step aside. Bring the next one,” Zhang Jiaohua replied without revealing what he had found.
Since he did not explain, Yuan Suihu dared not press further. He hurriedly called another youth forward: “Next, next. Yuan Dan, your turn.”
A boy younger than Yuan Rui stepped up and began cultivating. The result was identical.
“All of you, come here. Just cultivate as you usually do. Don’t mind anything else,” Zhang Jiaohua instructed.
The group of youths cultivated simultaneously. The outcome was the same for all: clear meridians, but the lower dantian leaked spiritual power.
“These are the more talented ones in the Yuan clan. Their body-forging progress has been faster than the others,” Yuan Suihu explained.
“Then bring me some others as well—no matter their aptitude. I want to see their condition too,” Zhang Jiaohua said.
The less gifted ones fared even worse: not only did their lower dantian leak spiritual power, but their meridians were narrow, hindering both cultivation and even slowing down body refinement.
Zhang Jiaohua shook his head. The situation was grim.
“Immortal, how is it?” Yuan Suihu asked.
“Keep them here. Whether they succeed depends on their own fortune,” Zhang Jiaohua replied.
He decided to check their middle and upper dantian as well. If those had the same issue, there would be little he could do.
Meanwhile, inside the Cultivation Diagram, the wolf king was being tormented nearly to death by the Leopard, Fat Cat, and Fat Monkey. It was no match for them, far inferior in both strength and wit, and it dared not resist.
Even so, its life force was stubborn—it managed to cling on, though the three spirit beasts had exhausted themselves in the process.
“I can’t, I need a nap. This guy is too hard to teach. He’s yours now,” the Fat Cat yawned and climbed into a tree to sleep.
The Fat Monkey quickly followed: “Leopard, this is your specialty. You’re the boss, so it’s your job.” He scrambled up a peach tree.
The Leopard, far more reliable, whistled and called: “Little Gray Dog, come here! Now I’ll formally teach you how to cultivate. How far you go depends on your own fortune. Jiaohua didn’t take you in because you’re useful, but because you were the first spirit beast he encountered in the Immortal Realm. This is your chance. If you don’t advance quickly, he’ll discard you sooner or later.”
The wolf king, nervous, immediately began cultivating with the method taught by the Leopard, which suited it well since wolves and leopards were of a similar lineage.
Outside the diagram, Zhang Jiaohua made another discovery. For some unknown reason, all Yuan clansmen had defective lower dantian, but their middle and upper dantian were normal. The problem was that the Yuan family’s cultivation methods all started with the lower dantian, since that was the safest approach. Normally, one would begin cultivation there and expand gradually upward. But for the Yuan family, the only hope was to take the risk of starting from the middle or upper dantian.
“I’ve basically figured out your situation. There is a way, but it’s extremely dangerous. At any time during cultivation, you could suffer qi deviation. Yet with your aptitude, this is your only chance,” Zhang Jiaohua said.
“Immortal, let them try. The Yuan clan has never lacked brave men unafraid of death! Even if only one succeeds, the Yuan family will rise again. Life or death, success or failure, all rests with fate! Immortal, what about me—can I still cultivate?” Yuan Suihu asked excitedly.
“You can. But it will be even riskier—you could lose your life at any moment,” Zhang Jiaohua replied.
“Haha! This life of mine was already saved by you. To have lived this long is more than I could ask for,” Yuan Suihu laughed heartily.
“In that case, today I’ll pass on a cultivation method to you all. Follow it and practice,” Zhang Jiaohua said. He directly implanted the cultivation technique into the minds of Yuan Suihu and the youths using the method of direct spiritual transmission.
Yuan Suihu immediately fell to his knees: “Thank you, Immortal, for giving me new life! Thank you for your boundless grace!”
The young men also knelt, following Yuan Suihu’s lead.
“Enough with the ceremony. Don’t waste time—start cultivating at once. If you succeed, you’ll be able to help me in return,” Zhang Jiaohua said, unimpressed by the display.
