This beast was no ordinary one. In such a rich spiritual environment, wild beasts could easily awaken intelligence and transform into spirit beasts. Once transformed, not only did their strength increase greatly, but even more frighteningly, they gained intelligence on par with humans.
Originally, the laws of nature ensured that powerful beasts had low intelligence, allowing humans to use their wit to dominate the perilous natural world. But once a beast became a spirit beast, it became far more dangerous. This wolf king had just turned into a spirit beast, and it laid a trap for the mountain folk hunting party. While they were celebrating their catch, the wolf king suddenly led its pack to strike.
This mountain range was called Descent Immortal Mountain. As for the origin of the name, the local Yuan clan had long forgotten. The Yuan clan had guarded this range for generations, and their clan head, Yuan Suihu, was also the leader of the hunting party. Only the strongest young men of the Yuan clan could enter this hunting team.
“Clan Head! That wolf king is a spirit beast! What should we do?” a young man beside Yuan Suihu asked nervously, sweat dripping from his forehead.
“Don’t panic! Stay calm. That beast wants us to panic so it can take advantage. Though it has become a spirit beast, it is only at the lowest level—barely stepping into the ranks of spirit beasts. It can’t even cast spells. If it could, it wouldn’t need tricks to wipe us out.” Yuan Suihu, a seasoned hunter, saw through the situation immediately.
The wolf king’s bluster was just to unsettle the Yuan hunters.
Thus, the two sides fell into a stalemate. The Yuan hunting team dared not retreat recklessly, while the wolf king didn’t dare to attack head-on. Though they had no cultivators, the Yuan clan’s hunters were formidable. Yuan Suihu himself was at the late stage of body refinement, his strength astonishing. If enraged, even the wolf king might not come out unscathed.
But the wolf king had its own advantage. Though its personal strength wasn’t overwhelming, it had numbers on its side. With its high intelligence, it could easily lead its pack in coordinated wolf-pack tactics.
The wolf king was patient. It first encircled the Yuan hunting party, slowly wearing them down. When exhaustion set in, it would strike the fatal blow. The longer it dragged on, the more the odds tilted in its favor.
“Clan Head, this beast is too cunning! It wants to wear us down and kill us slowly. We don’t have much food left, and our water is nearly gone. If this drags on, we’ll be the ones at a disadvantage. Shouldn’t we fight our way out?” Yuan Yusha, another seasoned hunter, quickly saw through the wolf king’s intent.
“Fight? With what? Just us few? We aren’t even enough to fill their teeth. No, we can’t clash head-on. Yusha, don’t rush. Let me think again.” Yuan Suihu understood the consequences clearly. If the hunting team—the Yuan clan’s elite—was lost, the entire clan would face doom. He had to find a way to save them.
“But if we don’t fight, what’s the plan? We can’t just wait for death! We old ones dying doesn’t matter, but these young men are the hope of the Yuan clan!” Yuan Yusha said anxiously.
“You’re right. Our lives don’t matter, but the clan’s future must not be extinguished. We old men will fight, and leave the path of survival to these youngsters!” Yuan Suihu finally made his decision.
“Good!” Yuan Yusha agreed without hesitation.
The Yuan hunters then argued fiercely—everyone insisting on sacrificing themselves to save the others.
When Zhang Jiaohua arrived, he thought they were clinging to life. To his surprise, they were all vying to die first, none retreating. This was truly rare.
“Sigh! So, you’re all fighting to face this thing?” Zhang Jiaohua descended from the sky, casually holding the wolf king in his hand, and appeared before Yuan Suihu and the others.
The Yuan hunters instantly fell silent, staring blankly at the wolf king in his grip.
“It’s really the wolf king!” someone shouted.
At that moment, the wolf king suddenly opened its eyes, glaring angrily at the one who shouted. But soon it drooped its head again, pitiful and helpless. In Zhang Jiaohua’s hand, it didn’t even dare to struggle. The gap between them was like a chasm—how could a newly-advanced spirit beast wolf king possibly resist a cultivator in the Nascent Soul Returning-to-Void stage?
“Many thanks, Immortal Master, for saving our lives!” Yuan Suihu dropped to his knees, prostrating and shouting loudly.
The Yuan clan quickly followed suit, kneeling and bowing in unison.
“Stand up,” Zhang Jiaohua said casually.
Though spoken lightly, his words carried an irresistible authority, forcing the Yuan hunters to rise.
The surrounding wolves all prostrated themselves, trembling, not daring to open their eyes. Luckily for them, Zhang Jiaohua had no intention of killing them. With just a thought, he could have turned them to dust. When he spoke earlier, the wolves felt as though a crushing mountain had suddenly lifted off their backs. They scrambled up and fled, abandoning even their king.
“You are all mountain folk here?” Zhang Jiaohua asked.
Yuan Suihu quickly nodded. “Yes, Immortal Master. Our Yuan clan is the only resident family of Descent Immortal Mountain.”
“This place is called Descent Immortal Mountain?” Zhang Jiaohua thought the name surely carried some hidden meaning.
“Yes, Immortal Master, this is Descent Immortal Mountain,” Yuan Suihu replied at once.
“Have you ever gone beyond the mountains?” Zhang Jiaohua asked.
“Yes. I have been to Gathering Immortals Village. The clans in this region gather there every year, where young men and women choose their spouses freely.”
Zhang Jiaohua noted the curious names: this mountain called Descent Immortal Mountain, and another place called Gathering Immortals Village.
He nodded. “Your danger has passed. You may return now.”
He was about to leave when Yuan Suihu quickly called out, “Immortal Master, please wait!”
“What is it?” Zhang Jiaohua asked.
“Our Yuan clan has dwelled here for countless generations. Our ancestral teachings say: ‘The Yuan clan must never leave Descent Immortal Mountain, but await its destined fate.’ I never understood this. But now that you, Immortal Master, have descended, I finally realize. We were waiting for your arrival. Now that fate has come, I beg Immortal Master to show mercy to our Yuan clan, who have waited here for generations.” Yuan Suihu knelt down once again.
