A few days later, the entire town of Gezhuping knew that Chen Maozhong’s wife had become a “divine medium.” People with issues wanted to consult her, those without any issues wanted to ask about their future, and if nothing else, they wanted to talk to deceased relatives to comfort themselves. Everyone has something on their mind, and they need a place to vent. This led to the situation where, whenever a “divine medium” appeared, the place would always be crowded.

Chen Maozhong and his son set up a stall in their courtyard, specifically selling paper money, candles, and incense. Some of those who came to consult the medium brought their own offerings, and the father and son didn’t interfere. For those who didn’t bring offerings, the father and son would make a sale. This was a way to keep all the profits within the family.

Of course, the main source of income was still the donation box in the main room. Whether they were consulting the medium or paying respects to their ancestors, people always left a donation. In the evening, they would empty the donation box into a bamboo tray. When they unwrapped the red paper around the money, the tray was piled high with bills. Although most were small denominations, the quantity was enough to add up to several hundred. If they encountered generous donors, they might even receive a red envelope with dozens of yuan inside.

“Dad, some of these people come here without bringing anything and just use everything from our house. They didn’t even mention giving us any money. We don’t know how much they put in the donation box. If it’s just a few yuan, we might not even cover our costs. Should I just chase them away?” Chen Hongming initially felt embarrassed, but ever since the family started making large amounts of money every day, he stopped complaining. Instead, he actively supported Chen Maozhong’s work, and the two of them had fully embraced this as their business.

“Why bother with them? They’re not going to bankrupt us. Cast a long line to catch big fish. You need to think long-term. Even if they take advantage of us, so what? Not everyone will be like them. At most, we’ll just waste a little firewood. Don’t always focus on money,” Chen Maozhong scolded his son, Chen Hongming.

As the father and son were talking, someone walked in from outside.

While they were still talking, the person quickly walked into the main room.

“Huh, that looks like Chen the Madman,” Chen Maozhong was momentarily stunned. After thinking for a moment, he quickly rushed into the main room.

Chen Hongming immediately realized that Chen the Madman probably had bad intentions coming here.

Chen the Madman entered the main room and immediately said to the disheveled Liu Fengying, who was sitting at the Eight Immortals table under the shrine, “Stop pretending to be a god in front of me! Get lost, or I’ll beat you until your soul is scattered!”

“What nonsense are you talking about? You couldn’t even protect your own wife, and what does your own daughter call you? I am the Divine Lady of Meishan from the Three Caverns, Yellow Lady of the Upper Cavern, Second Lady Li of the Middle Cavern, and Third Lady Zhou of the Lower Cavern. I have descended to this world, and you should quickly kneel and become my disciple. Do you really want me to summon the Five Thunders to strike you down?” Liu Fengying let out a sinister laugh.

“If you don’t know what’s good for you, I’ll make you pay. Green Emperor Thunder God, unleash the thunderbolt! White Emperor Thunder God, command the spirits! Black Emperor Thunder God, open the gates of heaven! Southern Fire Energy, empower my true self! Central Earth Star, move the true mechanism to slay demons! By the order of the Supreme Elder Lord, execute this decree immediately!” Chen the Madman formed a spell seal and was about to point it at Liu Fengying when suddenly a pole swung at him. Chen the Madman rolled on the ground, narrowly avoiding the blow. He looked back to see that Chen Maozhong and his son had rushed in, each holding a pole. Without a word, Chen Hongming swung the pole down, and if Chen the Madman hadn’t dodged quickly, he might have been killed on the spot.

“What are you doing?” Chen the Madman was chased all over the place by Chen Maozhong and his son. He wasn’t afraid of demons or ghosts, but he was afraid of those poles. Chen Hongming was swinging the pole with full force, clearly trying to kill him.

Chen Maozhong raised his pole high but never actually struck. He knew better, just trying to scare him.

“You fools really think your wife has become a divine medium? How could a mere mortal body withstand the presence of a god? She’s possessed, and you don’t even realize it. You think she’s a god, how ridiculous. Damn you, Chen Hongming, I’m trying to help you, but you don’t appreciate it. Forget it, I won’t bother with your family’s problems anymore. Just wait a month or so, and see what happens. You think this money is so easy to make?” Chen the Madman cursed as he ran.

Chen Maozhong gave up chasing after him, but Chen Hongming kept going, still wielding the pole.

“Chen the Madman, others may be afraid of you, but I’m not. If you’ve got the guts, come at me for a real fight!” Chen Hongming shouted.

“I was fighting before your dad and mom were even born!” Chen the Madman dodged another swing from Chen Hongming and kicked him down. “Forget it, since you two don’t know what’s good for you, I won’t waste my time here.”

Out of breath, Chen the Madman ran out of Chen Maozhong’s house. On his way out, he deliberately kicked over the stall where they were selling paper money, candles, and incense, then quickly ran away. From a distance, he could still hear Chen Maozhong and his son cursing him.

Zhang Jiaohua was just about to eat with Zhang Wenrong and the others when suddenly the iron gate of the horticultural field was pushed open.

Zhuanshan Leopard immediately rushed forward, barking.

“Get lost, get lost! I was just chased all over the place by two wolves, and now your dog is after me too!” Chen the Madman was chased around the field by Zhuanshan Leopard.

When Zhang Jiaohua saw that it was Chen the Madman, he called out, “Leopard, come back.”

Chen the Madman didn’t hesitate; he walked over, sat down, grabbed a bowl of rice, piled on some food, and began eating as if nothing had happened.

“Hey! What’s wrong with you?” Zhang Wenrong walked over to see his food taken and his seat occupied, feeling quite annoyed.

“Forget it, just go get another bowl of rice,” Zhang Jiaohua quickly stopped Zhang Wenrong from venting his anger.

“Jiaohua, you have good food here, meat every day,” Chen the Madman finished his bowl, not leaving a single grain of rice.

“You didn’t come here just for the food, did you?” Zhang Jiaohua vaguely understood Chen the Madman’s purpose.

“You can’t possibly not know why I’m here. Everyone in the village knows what’s happening at Duimen Mountain. Do you really not know?” Chen the Madman grinned.

“Why should I know? I’m not their family god. And even if I were, I wouldn’t have to handle everything,” Zhang Jiaohua said dismissively.
