“That’s right, the old man did it! Wow, this guy packs a punch—one blow could be fatal!” Wen Liangren clicked his tongue in admiration. “But a burst of bullets would still put him down, wouldn’t it?” He chuckled. “Letting him go? Lawyer Lu, I don’t have the guts for that. If he decides to come after us, who knows how many of our brothers might die!”

“Still, I did find out his background. He’s an old farmer from the Da Hao Mountains. His son and grandson are useless, not a match for the old man’s skills. But it’s still not safe; we’ll have to bury his whole family with him.”

Looking at the fist marks on the car, Lu Ming sighed inwardly. This must be the twilight of the martial arts era. This old man was incredibly strong, much more so than Long Ye. But against firearms, he was helpless.

Suddenly, Wen Liangren’s words about killing the old man’s entire family reached his ears. Lu Ming frowned, thinking it over, “Second Brother, you said you know his background. So, tell him if he seeks revenge, his whole family will suffer. People like him value their family and their promises. Scare him into giving his word.”

Wen Liangren’s face darkened, and he said nothing.

Lu Ming’s smile faded too. “Second Brother, if anyone’s to blame today, it’s you for letting me see what I shouldn’t have. How about this: give me some face, and I’ll buy the lives of this old man and his family. Name your price. I promise to persuade him not to seek revenge.”

“I’ll think about it,” Wen Liangren grunted.

“Second Brother, I hope you’re not just brushing me off. Really think it over. Or discuss it with Fourth Brother. Tell him I hope for a bit of leniency. And another thing: your gangs dealing with human traffickers—selling women and children—isn’t right! I shouldn’t have asked you for help in the first place. Farewell!” Lu Ming clasped his hands in salute and left.

As he walked away, Wen Liangren’s eyes burned with anger. He spat fiercely on the ground.

Lu Ming returned to room 408 and continued reviewing the case files until late at night. Seeing it was past eleven, he finally left the study.

Pu Xiuna, who had been idly flipping through a fashion magazine in the servant’s room, quickly ran out when she heard movement.

Downstairs in the plaza, just as Pu Xiuna started the car, someone emerged from the shadows and approached the vehicle.

Lu Ming was startled. The person in a white undershirt and black pants was the old man who had been tortured in Wen Liangren’s basement that evening.

A sense of alarm rose in Lu Ming. He hadn’t heard from Wen Liangyu about this.

He was just thinking of calling Wen Liangyu when he got home.

The old man clasped his fists in a salute. “Young master, I’m here to thank you!” He didn’t seem hostile.

Lu Ming slowly rolled down the car window. The old man stepped forward and bowed deeply. “Iron Palm Water Floating Sun Luting, thank you for saving my life!”

Iron Palm Water Floating? Sun Luting? Lu Ming coughed. “Did Wen Liangren let you go?”

“Not exactly, but he must have consulted with a relative who could control him and decided to treat my injuries first. He cursed the entire time, but kept cursing you, young master!”

Lu Ming nodded slightly. “From his perspective, he has reason to curse. He was helping me, and I turned against him. It’s a bit hypocritical of me. I should have known what kind of people they are.” He looked at the old man again. “Treating your injuries? But you managed to escape?”

“Yes, I pretended to be unconscious in the hospital. The guards let their guard down, so I managed to escape.”

Lu Ming was momentarily stunned and frowned slightly.

“Young master, don’t worry. I didn’t harm them. Without your intervention, I wouldn’t have had a chance to escape. If I harmed or killed anyone, it would be dishonorable and put you in a difficult position. But I will settle the score with them someday! Rest assured, I won’t take their lives.”

Lu Ming nodded, gaining some respect for the old man. Noticing his leg heavily bandaged—the one Wen Liangren had shot—he said, “Old sir, you should go home and recover. I’ll speak with the Wen family and end this matter. I’ll call them now and ask them not to pursue you. Will you do me this favor? I know you’ve been unjustly tortured and are angry. I’ll ask Wen Liangren to come out and apologize to you with tea?”

“There’s no need, young master. I won’t trouble them for now. But I don’t know how to repay your life-saving kindness. It seems you lack for nothing. How about this: I, old man, will protect you for ten years?” He paused, realizing how absurd it sounded after just being tortured by a bunch of thugs. “I am willing to serve you for ten years!” He bowed deeply, looking somewhat decayed.

“That’s not necessary. I’ll make a call first!” Lu Ming got out of the car and went to the lobby to call Wen Liangyu.

The Wen family must be in chaos. If the old man secretly sought revenge, they wouldn’t be able to defend against him. It would be like declaring war on another powerful gang, requiring bodyguards and full armament, unable to roam freely.

Without this call, the Wen family might even send people to capture the old man’s relatives as hostages.

“Really? Old Sun went to see you? Said he wouldn’t retaliate against Lao’er?” Wen Liangyu sounded relieved.

“Fourth Brother, I’ve been too hypocritical, causing trouble for you and Second Brother!” Lu Ming laughed.

“Sigh, you’re right. I’ve advised Lao’er against getting involved with human traffickers. It’s against natural order and hurts people’s feelings. What’s the point of making that small amount of dirty money?” Wen Liangyu sighed. “As for what you’re investigating, Lao’er will continue. Don’t worry. We brothers should clear up any misunderstandings.”

Lu Ming agreed but felt a slight estrangement between him and Wen Liangyu.

His values from his past life didn’t align with those of a gangster. But Wen Liangyu often didn’t act like a typical gang leader, making one forget his true identity.

Besides, Wen Liangyu seemed decent, and Lu Ming still admired him.

Time would tell.

Returning to the car, he found Sun Luting still waiting.

“I made the call. It’s settled. Let the grievances cool for a while, okay?”

“Whatever you say, young master,” Sun Luting saluted again.

Lu Ming took out his checkbook, wrote “200,” and handed it to Sun Luting. “Old sir, you should go back to the hospital and heal properly. At least get your wounds treated! Use good medicine. It looks like your wound is bleeding again…” Indeed, there was blood dripping from Sun Luting’s pant leg.

Two hundred yuan could afford the best treatment for ten Sun Lutings, given that the bullet should have been removed and only the external wound remained.

The old man waved his hand. “Don’t worry, young master, I’m fine!”

Lu Ming, without giving him a choice, shoved the check into his hand, got back into the car, and signaled Pu Xiuna to drive. From the window, he smiled at the old man. “Even if you’re protecting me for ten years, you need to heal first, right?”

Of course, he was just humoring him. Nowadays, professional bodyguards would be much better than the old man.

For now, he didn’t need a bodyguard.
