As for Leng Feng, he had actually taken Ding Ying out for some fun. He had heard that Tuoshui County had many interesting places, and since he had worried Ding Ying for so long, he naturally wanted to make it up to her.
But Ding Ying was still worried.
“Leng Feng, let’s go back. I see your injury hasn’t fully healed. What if we encounter an assassin like last time?”
“Don’t worry, nothing will happen.”
“But…”
“Ding Ying, as long as I’m here, no one can harm you.” He took her hand gently, not wanting her to worry too much.
Ding Ying looked at him. No matter how much she tried to persuade him, it was useless. Well, if he insisted, then she’d just enjoy the outing.
Tuoshui County wasn’t very big, but the streets were full of attractive sights and all sorts of delicious food. There was so much to see that it was impossible to take it all in.
Leng Feng took her to try many delicious foods and showed her many unusual things—experiences Ding Ying had never had before. Besides seeing the lanterns with Leng Feng previously, she hadn’t been this happy in a long time.
“There are candied hawthorns over there. I’ll buy a skewer,” Ding Ying said excitedly, returning with two skewers and offering one to Leng Feng. “Here, I heard it’s delicious.”
As soon as Leng Feng reached out to take it, he furrowed his brows in pain, pressed his hand to his chest, and coughed up blood.
Ding Ying’s face immediately turned pale. “Leng Feng! What’s wrong?”
The skewer fell from her hand as she hurriedly supported him. “Are you feeling unwell?”
“I’m fine. Don’t worry.”
“I’ll take you to see a doctor.”
Leng Feng forced a smile, trying to hide his discomfort. “Really, I’m fine.”
“How can you be fine? You coughed up blood!”
“It’s an old injury. I just need some rest.”
“No, you must listen to me. We’re going to see a doctor now.”
Ding Ying was extremely worried. Seeing him cough up blood, she firmly pulled him toward a pharmacy.
At the pharmacy, she helped Leng Feng sit down and tearfully called for the doctor. “Doctor, please hurry! He just coughed up blood!”
Unexpectedly, it was Doctor Liang. Wiping his hands, he quickly came over and checked Leng Feng’s pulse.
After examining him, he nodded. “This is an internal injury. It’s serious, but with proper medicine and rest, he’ll recover.”
Ding Ying finally relaxed. “Thank you, doctor!”
“It’s nothing. Just continue this prescription for a few days. The Yan household also has a patient with a similar condition,” Doctor Liang said as he began preparing the medicine.
Of course, Leng Feng knew that the patient he referred to was himself. But Ding Ying had no idea. She wondered briefly about the Yan household but didn’t think further.
She told Leng Feng, “Next time, don’t do this. If your injury hasn’t healed, don’t overexert yourself.”
“Yes. It won’t happen again.” He nodded obediently.
At that moment, Cui’er happened to pass by the pharmacy. Since Leng Feng wasn’t at the Yan household, she didn’t need to pick up medicine. But she habitually glanced inside—and saw Leng Feng.
“Master? How are you here?” she exclaimed and rushed in to defend her young lady.
She ran straight to Leng Feng. “Master, why are you here? Our lady is looking for you!”
Leng Feng was surprised. How did this girl appear here? How unlucky. But with Ding Ying present, he didn’t know how to explain and could only say, “You’ve got the wrong person.”
“Cui’er doesn’t mistake the master. You need to go back with me. Our lady will treat you well.”
With one master after another being mentioned, Ding Ying was confused. She stepped forward and put her hand in front of Leng Feng, asking Cui’er, “Miss, are you mistaken?”
“Who are you? This is my master. Move aside!” Cui’er pushed her suddenly.
Leng Feng steadied Ding Ying and quickly asked, “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine.”
Ah, so she really was Ding Ying. Cui’er finally realized that last night’s wedding, he had gone with Ding Ying—likely she had tied up her young lady.
Cui’er added fuel to the fire. “Master, our lady treated you so well. She saved you, nursed your injuries, and yet you ran away on the wedding night. I feel so sorry for her! How could you?”
“Cui’er, stop talking nonsense. Nothing happened between me and your lady,” Leng Feng said quickly.
“How could nothing happen? You were about to be married last night! Why did you leave?” Cui’er nearly cried.
Listening, Ding Ying pieced together the situation. Leng Feng had been saved by the Yan household’s young lady, and they were supposed to marry? Her eyes reddened as she asked, “Leng Feng, is this true? Are you really going to marry the Yan family lady?”
“No. I told you, I’m going to marry you, not anyone else. I was injured and fell into their trap. Ding Ying, trust me.”
Even if Ding Ying were naive, she knew Leng Feng wouldn’t lie in front of her. She also trusted his character but couldn’t help worrying about what Cui’er said.
Seeing her hesitation, Leng Feng grabbed Cui’er’s arm and commanded, “Explain yourself immediately, or I won’t let this go.”
“Master… Cui’er’s hand hurts. Please let go.”
“Speak!” Leng Feng’s brows were furrowed; his tone left no room for negotiation.
Seeing Cui’er in real pain, Ding Ying quickly intervened. “Enough, Leng Feng. I trust you. Don’t make it hard for her. After all, her lady saved you.”
“Ding Ying, why… why are you helping her?” Leng Feng began to speak, but Ding Ying addressed Cui’er directly. “You are Miss Cui’er, right? I think your lady must have misunderstood. Leng Feng and I have been engaged for a long time. He will not marry your lady. I know your lady saved him, and that kindness will be repaid one day—but he cannot marry her.”
Ding Ying’s words were surprising; Leng Feng always thought only someone like Yin Qingyue could speak like this. Coming from Ding Ying, it carried a unique charm.
Cui’er, though touched, sided with her lady and fell silent.
At that moment, Yan Ling arrived, searching for Leng Feng. She hadn’t expected him to be at the pharmacy. Upon seeing him, she rushed in.
“Leng Feng! You’re really here! Come back with me!” Yan Ling grabbed his hand.
Leng Feng forcefully shook her off, still in shock. What a disastrous day—everything was going wrong. “Miss Yan, are you sick? Why are you chasing me here?”
Angered, Yan Ling snapped, “Leng Feng, you’re heartless! I shouldn’t have saved you!”
“I don’t care if you saved me,” Leng Feng said coldly and tried to leave with Ding Ying.
Yan Ling refused to let go. Now that Chu Jingcheng and Yin Qingyue weren’t around, could she not confront him?
“You’re coming back with me today!” she demanded, eyes falling on Ding Ying’s hand in Leng Feng’s. Enraged, she shouted, “Who is she?”
Leng Feng replied firmly, “She is Ding Ying, my fiancée. Look clearly—she is the one who will spend her life with me.”
“What? She’s Ding Ying? Then who was that other girl?”
Yan Ling scrutinized Ding Ying. She wasn’t as delicate as the previous girl but still very beautiful.
Leng Feng continued, “Now do you understand? Move aside.”
He pushed her, but Yan Ling grabbed him. Leng Feng, still weak from his injury, couldn’t overpower her. Ding Ying, panicking, tried to intervene, but Yan Ling’s skill surpassed hers, shoving Ding Ying aside.
Leng Feng’s center of gravity faltered, and combined with his injury, he nearly fainted. Yan Ling quickly supported him.
He began to lose consciousness, his eyes dim, and realizing the girl before him wasn’t Ding Ying, he resisted. “Go away… I don’t need your help.”
But Yan Ling held him tightly.
“I don’t want to watch you die. I saved your life,” she said.
Ding Ying, worried, tried to rush to him but was blocked by Cui’er.
“This is between my lady and the master. You’re an outsider, go away,” Cui’er ordered, pushing Ding Ying outside.
Ding Ying, anxious for Leng Feng, tried to return, but Cui’er called the shop assistants to stop her.
“This is between my master and my lady. If you interfere and get hurt, I won’t be responsible,” Cui’er warned.
“You can’t do this! Move!” Ding Ying shouted, but her growing panic only made her more flustered.
After being pushed several times, Ding Ying’s asthma flared up. Holding her chest, she stumbled back, pale, muttering, “L-let go of… Leng Feng… let him go…”
Before she could finish, her vision blackened, and she collapsed.
Doctor Liang, witnessing this, was shocked. He quickly had his assistants step aside, rushed over, and knelt by Ding Ying to check her condition.
“It’s serious—this girl is having an asthma attack!”
He immediately began treating her.
Hearing this, Leng Feng, inside the pharmacy, panicked and tried to reach her—but Ding Ying grabbed him.
“You can’t go.”
“Move aside!” Leng Feng pushed against her, trying to reach Ding Ying, but before he could, his legs gave out, and he fainted.
With Leng Feng unconscious, the entire pharmacy erupted into chaos. Yan Ling rushed to check on him, worried out of her mind, while Doctor Liang had his hands full, utterly overwhelmed.
