So attentive… maybe a bit much…
But Lin Tianyue didn’t think so. He carried Zhang Qiao to the bathroom. The hospital restroom wasn’t divided by gender, but each stall had a door.
He put her down and, worried she might have difficulty, reached out to help undo her pants—but Zhang Qiao strongly refused, leaving him dumbfounded as he had to step back.
After closing the door, she knew Lin Tianyue was just outside. She could even see his shoes through the gap under the stall.
She felt a little embarrassed. “Lin Tianyue, can you go out?”
“What’s there to be afraid of, Qiao Qiao? I have to watch over you.”
Zhang Qiao’s scalp tingled. “But if you’re here, I can’t get out.”
Lin Tianyue said, “Qiao Qiao, don’t be shy. It’s okay.”
Zhang Qiao: “Are you going to leave or not?”
He only moved a couple of steps toward the door and refused to go further.
He had heard stories of women giving birth in toilets. Honestly, Lin Tianyue thought that if there weren’t other people in the room, he should have set up some container so she could handle it right on the bed…
A minute passed. Lin Tianyue asked through the door again, “Qiao Qiao, are you done?”
Blushing, Zhang Qiao pushed open the door—and, of course, Lin Tianyue immediately carried her back to the ward.
“Lin Tianyue, don’t you think you’re overdoing it? I’m giving birth, not paralyzed!”
Lin Tianyue just chuckled. At the door, he kissed her temple: “Qiao Qiao, since we’re entitled to a little pampering, I just want you to indulge a bit. What’s wrong with that?”
Zhang Qiao’s heart melted instantly at the tone of his doting.
Her face turned as red as a ripe fruit.
She still buried her face in his chest. “Lin Tianyue, did you not brush your teeth?”
“What? You disgusted by me?”
Zhang Qiao pulled back slightly and, with her moist eyes fixed on his tired-yet-excited, handsome face, nodded: “Yeah, a little.”
Unexpectedly, Lin Tianyue kissed her temple again—hard.
He laughed: “Doesn’t matter if you’re disgusted!”
He carefully laid her back on the bed, making sure she was fine.
Then Lin Tianyue grabbed his toiletries and went to brush up. He scrubbed his face hard and brushed his teeth repeatedly until his gums bled.
Looking in the mirror, he finally felt a bit refreshed.
He should have gone home to change, but he didn’t dare leave.
Well, he’d manage for now.
When Zhang Ling returned, Lin Tianyue had her watch over Zhang Qiao while he went out to buy breakfast.
There was a bustling market outside the hospital.
He walked from one end to the other, buying fresh meat wontons, millet porridge, buns, stuffed pancakes, eggs, a portion of beef noodles, and even two fried dough sticks with a cup of soy milk.
In short, Lin Tianyue bought a little of every type of breakfast, thinking there would surely be something Zhang Qiao liked.
Carrying the bags back to the ward, Zhang Qiao and her sister were sharing a chestnut cake.
Zhang Qiao wasn’t too into sweets; she only tried a few bites because Zhang Ling was eating.
She asked her sister where it was bought. Zhang Ling casually changed the topic.
Other postpartum women in the ward were having breakfast too. One ate a salty duck egg with a steamed bun, with a bowl of porridge on the side, the millet grains clearly visible.
With no seasoning, the new mom thought Zhang Ling’s cake looked novel and occasionally glanced over.
Her husband, eating meat buns made at home, got annoyed by her constant glances and slammed the table: “Eat quickly! You still need to take care of the kid!”
The new mom protested a little: “Why are you yelling? You’ll scare the baby. Look at her, then look at you. Are you even a man?”
Same human beings, yet such a huge difference.
“You brat! Dare to sass me again!”
“Can’t I even speak? I just had a son for your family. I’m in confinement and can’t even eat an egg, but you eat until your mouth’s dripping grease!”
“Have you ever seen a woman in confinement eating meat? You’re not allowed because you can’t digest it. You just keep staring at others. She hasn’t even given birth yet; wait until she has a daughter. Let’s see which man doesn’t flip!”
Before the man could finish, the ward door was suddenly kicked open, startling him so much he shrank down.
Zhang Ling got up and took the bags from Lin Tianyue: “Brother-in-law, why did you buy so much?”
Lin Tianyue’s dark eyes swept over the man in the ward, slightly annoyed.
“We have a lot of people. Qiao Qiao needs to eat well, and you and Old Jin also need breakfast.”
Lin Tianyue unpacked everything and let Zhang Qiao choose first. She picked the wontons. He laughed: “Exactly what I thought—you just want this.”
He took a small spoon, scooped up a plump wonton, and brought it to her lips. Zhang Qiao tried to dodge, but he insisted: “Qiao Qiao, you’re our most precious right now. Forget feeding you—if you want the stars from the sky, I’ll get them for you. Eat!”
Zhang Qiao felt something off: “I can’t give you a son.”
Lin Tianyue, knowing she was overthinking again, scooped another wonton: “Don’t worry, darling. Daughters or sons, I love them equally.”
The man in the neighboring bed scoffed, but Lin Tianyue glared fiercely, and the whole family immediately shrank back.
Lin Tianyue and Zhang Qiao were sweet and affectionate. Zhang Ling felt a little redundant and picked up a bun to eat outside—but Lin Tianyue called her: “Sister, get some for Old Jin!”
“…Okay.”
Zhang Ling handed the fried dough sticks and soy milk to Jin Quan.
Jin Quan looked at her: “Still thinking of me, huh.”
“Thanks for the cake. But…”
“If what follows isn’t pleasant, don’t say it.”
Zhang Ling pressed her lips together, and, as he wished, didn’t continue.
In the ward, Zhang Qiao had eaten her fill. Lin Tianyue diligently cleared the table and wiped her hands.
The other new mom’s mother-in-law arrived with two girls about eleven or twelve, presumably her daughters.
The girls were immediately bossed around by their dad and grandmother. Even when the mom tried to comfort them, if they weren’t coaxed well, the dad scolded them.
Zhang Qiao’s sister accidentally knocked over a bottle and was shoved by her grandmother, getting scolded with all sorts of harsh words.
The father scolded, the grandmother scolded, even the mother added a few reproaches.
Lin Tianyue couldn’t stand it and said, “Stop yelling.” The old lady, unfamiliar with Jin Quan’s authority, shouted even louder, complaining it was noisy and demanded Lin Tianyue move to a VIP ward.
Lin Tianyue could no longer tolerate it and stood up: “Qiao Qiao, wait here. We’re moving rooms right now.”
The old lady ignored her son’s signal: “Hah! As if you actually have that power. I heard that you need approval to get into a cadre ward. You think you can move just because you want?”
Just then, two nurses pushed the door open: “Comrade Zhang Qiao in bed 8, the upper-floor cadre ward is now available. When would you like to move?”
The old lady was momentarily speechless.
Zhang Qiao was also stunned, waiting for Lin Tianyue to explain.
He had just said they’d move—and now it could happen immediately. Magic couldn’t be done this fast.
