This wasn’t a dream. Standing right in front of her was Lin Tianyue.

Seeing that she was awake, Lin Tianyue stood up and bent over to look at Zhang Qiao. His fingers gently brushed her cheek, his eyes full of guilt.

“Qiaoqiao, you’re awake. Qiaoqiao, I’m sorry. I came back too late. You held on all by yourself until now—you’ve worked so hard.”

Lin Tianyue had never been good with sweet words, but what he had was sincerity.

A few simple sentences, the slight movement of his Adam’s apple, his reddened eyes, the anxiety in his gaze, and the hand gripping hers tightly—everything revealed his current state.

He had rushed back across thousands of kilometers.

And he had been deeply worried about her.

Zhang Qiao had actually been quite calm. Even when her water suddenly broke yesterday and the whole family panicked, she hadn’t.

The poor accommodation, the discomfort in her belly, being criticized by an unreasonable family member of another expectant mother, having no one to ease her anxiety—she endured it all without a word.

But now, looking at the man so close before her and hearing his apology, a sudden wave of grievance surged up in her heart.

She stared at his face blankly. Before she could speak, her nose stung and tears rolled down uncontrollably.

“Lin Tianyue, you still remember to come back?”

She lightly punched his shoulder, crying even more pitifully.

He had never seen her cry like this. The moment she did, he felt even more guilty.

Supporting her back, he pulled her tightly into his arms. “I’m sorry, Qiaoqiao. I was wrong. I was truly wrong!”

Zhang Qiao buried her face in his chest, soaking the front of his shirt with tears.

She didn’t even know what exactly she felt wronged about.

When Zhang Ling walked in and saw the two embracing, she awkwardly stepped back out.

Seeing Lin Tianyue return, even her tightly wound nerves finally relaxed.

Standing at the doorway, she sniffled a couple of times.

When she turned her head, she saw Jin Quan standing against the wall, watching intently, which made her tense again.

Jin Quan seemed to be mocking her and even let out a faint scoff.

He had probably never seen a woman more useless and timid than her—calling herself someone’s older sister, yet unable to handle any big situation.

“What are you laughing at?” Zhang Ling glared at him as she walked past.

But he stretched out his arm to block her way.

“You—”

“Have you thought about what I asked you last night? Do you agree?”

Zhang Ling kept a straight face and bit her lip tightly. “No.”

“No?” Jin Quan’s eyes turned cold.

“I don’t know you at all. I just got divorced, and I don’t want to look for anyone.”

She hadn’t slept last night, but she had thought about it. She didn’t want to jump from one pit of fire into another.

Jin Quan didn’t look like a good man. Even when she had been younger and first experiencing feelings of love, she had never liked this type of man.

Love couldn’t fill one’s stomach. Zhang Ling felt that living alone now was quite good.

Jin Quan slowly lowered his arm. “Is that your true answer?”

Zhang Ling nodded.

Unexpectedly, he gave another cold laugh.

He stepped closer and stuffed something into her hand.

“What is this?”

“It’s for you. If you don’t like it, throw it away.”

Zhang Ling lifted the item in her hand. It was the chestnut cake she had stared at for a long time yesterday at the bakery with Zhang Qiao.

They had already eaten, so they hadn’t bought it. But she had actually wanted to try it.

Zhang Ling liked sweets. It was the only small pleasure in her otherwise dull life.

She hadn’t expected Jin Quan to notice her preference and even buy the little cake for her.

After handing it to her, Jin Quan left.

Zhang Ling took a few steps forward. “Jin Quan!”

But he didn’t look back. As she looked at the small cake again, a strange sense of guilt rose in her heart.

Perhaps he did have a little sincerity?

In the hospital room, after coaxing her for quite a while, Lin Tianyue finally got Zhang Qiao to stop crying.

She reached out and touched his face, only then noticing the injury on it, the dirt on his coat, and a tear that looked like it had been cut by something sharp.

“You big brute… why is your face injured? What happened to your clothes? Brother Quan said you only set off yesterday. From Shenzhen to Jiangcheng, it should take at least two days. How did you get back?”

Facing her concern, Lin Tianyue only smiled casually.

“It’s nothing. I was in a hurry and accidentally fell.”

“You can scrape your face from a fall?” She didn’t quite believe him, but she had no time to question it further. “Gu Yu arranged for you to take a plane back, right?”

“Mm.” He nodded and began talking about his first time flying. “Qiaoqiao, I realized planes are really great. Whoosh—and you’re home. Next time, I’ll take you and our son with me!”

So he really did fly back.

Usually he was stingy with himself, but he was willing to take a plane for her. It seemed he had truly been anxious.

The grievance in her heart faded a little.

She laughed through her tears. “You’re making such a fuss over taking a plane. Director Lin, keep your voice down. Aren’t you embarrassed?”

He smiled sheepishly and reached to touch her belly. “How do you feel now?”

“It hurts a little…”

More accurately, the pain had intensified since yesterday.

“I’ll go get the doctor!”

“No…” She pulled him back and looked him up and down. “Lin Tianyue, go wash your face and tidy yourself up first.”

His first reaction was that his wife thought he was dirty.

Normally he would have been unhappy, but now he scratched his head. “…Alright.”

“After that, buy me something to eat. I’m hungry.”

“Qiaoqiao, what do you want to eat?”

“Hmm…” She thought for a moment. “Anything.”

A woman’s “anything” was the hardest thing to deal with. If he bought the wrong thing, it would be a disaster.

“Alright, I’ll go get some water first.”

Zhang Qiao thought he had gone to wash up, but instead he brought back a basin of hot water. After soaking a towel, he moved to wipe her face.

“I don’t need—”

The warm towel covered her face. One hand supported the back of her head while the other carefully wiped her face and hands twice.

The woman in the next bed had just woken up. She looked enviously at Zhang Qiao and Lin Tianyue, then glanced at her own husband.

It was already daylight, yet he was still snoring beside her, taking up more space than she did. Even the baby’s crying couldn’t wake him.

The woman nudged him with her elbow. “Our son is awake. Go check on him.”

“He’s probably hungry. Bring him over and feed him.”

“I don’t have any milk…”

“Enough with the nagging. Can’t you let me sleep a bit?”

The baby kept wailing. The woman struggled to sit up, enduring the pain as she picked up the infant and rocked him, coaxing him gently.

Meanwhile, Lin Tianyue had already finished wiping Zhang Qiao’s face. He poured warm water into her cup and helped her brush her teeth.

“Wife, do you need to use the restroom?” he asked.

She nodded. Her water had broken, and the doctor had told her to move as little as possible. From yesterday until now, she had mostly stayed in bed.

She moved her legs off the bed, about to stand, when her body suddenly felt light—Lin Tianyue had already lifted her into his arms.

Zhang Qiao felt a little shy and buried her face in his chest like an ostrich.
