After nearly the time it takes for one stick of incense to burn, the couple finally managed to understand what Lin Mo had been trying to say.
In short, she had disguised herself as a man, gone out, gotten fancied by some young lady, and that young lady even wanted to cling to her using questionable methods—but Lin Mo rejected her.
A matter that could be explained clearly in a single sentence, yet this little rascal insisted on talking for almost a whole incense’s time, most of it spent bragging about her own brilliance.
“Dad, Mom, you two don’t understand—at that moment, I was so charming! Everyone who saw me said I was good-looking! Even though I’m short, my aura is not short at all!”
Lin Mo slapped her chest proudly. Someone who didn’t know better would think she’d accomplished something earth-shattering.
Lin parents: “…”
Was that really necessary? Forget it. They were already used to it.
“Alright, alright. Didn’t you say you wanted stir-fried cured pork? I’ll go cook it for you. Hurry up, go back to your room, take a bath, and change clothes. Look at yourself—give you a bowl and you could go out and beg.”
Minister Lin truly didn’t understand anymore. Other families’ daughters don’t come home looking like this after playing outside. Even young boys don’t get this dirty from a day out.
Anyone who didn’t know would think she didn’t walk but rolled her way back. How else would she get this filthy?
Even Bai Xiao was cleaner than her.
Lin Mo flashed a flattering grin and dragged Bai Xiao back to her room.
Watching their backs, Madam Lin suddenly thought of an important question.
“You don’t think… the two of them even bathe together, do you?!”
The more she thought about it, the more possible it seemed. Bai Xiao had lived attached to her daughter, so he definitely knew everything about her.
Even after turning human, the two were inseparable. Though they arranged a courtyard for him, he kept running into their daughter’s courtyard every day.
And don’t think they didn’t know—every night he shrunk himself and slept on the same bed as Lin Mo. Sometimes the two would even argue in their sleep.
Minister Lin’s eyelid twitched. The more he thought about it, the more possible it seemed.
Forget it. Since it’s been so long, intervening now would be pointless.
Anyway, those two were practically heaven-made for each other. No one understood each other better.
But reality was the opposite of what they imagined: Lin Mo was soaking in the bath alone, and Bai Xiao was soaking in a cup, separated by a screen while still chatting away.
“At least prepare a bigger cup for me. Or make me a tiny wooden tub! I bathe in a cup every day—how shabby is that?” Bai Xiao complained about his treatment.
Everyone else had their own bath barrels—why was he stuck bathing in a teacup?
Last time he even mixed up the cup he used for drinking tea with the one he used for bathing. Truly tragic.
Lin Mo’s voice came from inside, “Can’t you make one yourself? You even have pocket money—you can go out and buy one. Get one custom-made if you want.”
“Don’t think you can ask me to do everything for you. I’m a girl.”
Bai Xiao: …Oh, now you remember you’re a girl? Funny how that awareness never appeared before.
Ever since becoming human, he had mostly bathed in cups. It was quite comfortable—he could refresh the water anytime, soak for ages with just one kettle of water, saving both water and effort.
But he still wanted a delicate little bath barrel. It had become an obsession.
When the two finished their baths, Minister Lin’s food was ready. His cooking wasn’t amazing, but it wasn’t bad either—just simple home dishes.
Madam Lin even personally made a soup.
Watching the two eat like a whirlwind sweeping away clouds, the couple’s faces were full of dislike.
“Fine, you eat like this at home, but don’t do it outside. It’s too unsightly.”
Hearing this, Lin Mo paused. 【What dialect is that? Sounds like a northern accent.】
In modern times, Northeast dialect uses the word “dirty/messy.” Could it be Northeasterners existed here too? Or did Northeasterners naturally speak Northeast dialect across worlds?
Before Bai Xiao could answer, she immediately questioned her father:
“Dad, where did you learn the word ‘maitai’? I’ve never heard you say that before!”
She did not want her handsome, elegant, unmatched father suddenly speaking with a Northeast accent! The image would collapse instantly!
Minister Lin thought for a moment. “Recently, some officials from the north came. They speak with an accent. Without noticing, I picked up some of their words. But it’s not a big influence.”
Lin Mo widened her eyes and slammed her chopsticks down. “Not a big influence?! Dad, absolutely not! You can’t learn from them! Your elegant, unrivaled gentlemanly voice—if you start speaking like that, it’s over!”
Then she turned to her mother. “Mom! Control Dad! Don’t let him learn!”
Madam Lin clicked her tongue impatiently. “Eat. You talk too much.”
In the end, Minister Lin did hold onto his accent. He didn’t get fully influenced—just occasionally slipped a northern word or two.
His mature, immortal gentleman voice remained intact—just with increased attack power when scolding people.
Even some censor officials couldn’t win arguments against him.
As for those few northern officials, because their accent had too much influence, the emperor ordered them to learn standardized official speech and correct their dialect.
Why?
Because whenever they opened their mouths, Lin Mo and Bai Xiao immediately started whispering Northeastern skits and comedy in their heads. Their silent commentary almost made the entire court die of suppressed laughter.
Their Northeastern accent was even better than the natives’. Perhaps this fictional time borrowed some modern dialects… though they didn’t understand why the north here spoke Northeast dialect, it didn’t stop them from finding it amusing.
The officials were already “magnetic” enough, but with Lin Mo and Bai Xiao practically performing two-person comedy on the court every day, more and more people were influenced.
If it continued, the entire court would collapse.
Eventually, those officials were forced to learn standard speech, ending Lin Mo and Bai Xiao’s fun—but saving the dignity of the entire bureaucracy.
The emperor finally sighed in relief. From now on, any official entering the capital had to take a standardized language exam first. Otherwise, every region speaking a different dialect—how would he understand anything?
He couldn’t possibly learn every dialect in the country! If he had to switch accents depending on the official, he may as well quit and become a roaming dialect entertainer.
Though he technically served the people, he still needed dignity—and now he had money, too.
The Lin family men were exhausted these past few days. Those two little ancestors were truly something else.
