Jin Luoluo clapped her hands.
“Little Luo Luo really is the smartest. Though you didn’t get everything right.”
“This place gathers famous beauties from all over the country, and many of them are qingguan—courtesans who are still pure, untouched young women. The madams invest a great deal of effort in cultivating their talents so they can be sold for a better price.”
“Actually, some of them have excellent potential. I want to select a few as long-term models for Xiangluo’er. I also have another bold project in mind that requires some stunning women as secret weapons, so I might recruit a few for that as well.”
“Why didn’t you tell us earlier? If we’d known that was your purpose, we wouldn’t have tried to stop you,” Xiao Luo said.
He found her reasoning perfectly acceptable. The kind of girls she needed were difficult to find, and the carnival was approaching quickly, so he actually approved of her plan.
Jin Luoluo cast a sidelong glance at Xiao Che.
“You may agree, but a certain someone certainly wouldn’t. In his eyes, any woman who enters a brothel is improper. He allows himself to come, but forbids others from doing so.”
Xiao Che’s anger flared.
“Do you really think any man would be happy seeing his fiancée come to a place like this? Even if he says nothing on the surface, he would be unhappy inside. I’m not that broad-minded.”
Jin Luoluo giggled, her voice thick with mockery.
“That’s exactly why I didn’t tell you. I already knew you’d react like this.”
“Xiao Che, you’ve never been able to see things from another person’s perspective. You simply impose your own will and make decisions for others however you please. Who do you think you are? You can manage Yang Ruoyao, your concubines, and your subordinates—but don’t even dream of controlling me.”
Xiao Che felt that Jin Luoluo was utterly ungrateful.
He really had been worried that something like the Moonlight Beauty incident might happen again. What was wrong with trying to protect her? It was rare for him to show genuine concern.
Yet she immediately bared her sharp tongue and lectured him.
Yes, perhaps he was somewhat overbearing—but only because he didn’t want her to get hurt.
“I don’t want you here partly because it makes me uncomfortable,” he admitted, “but even more because this place hides all sorts of dangers. It’s not somewhere a young woman can handle alone. What if something happened? I was only looking out for you. I simply didn’t want you getting into trouble. Is that really so wrong?”
His tone softened, and for once he spoke honestly about his feelings.
Not only Jin Luoluo was stunned—even Xiao Yu and Xiao Luo exchanged surprised glances.
It was rare indeed to see Xiao Che lowering himself and speaking so gently to Jin Luoluo.
