Was he trying to cover for him? Or what? Why wouldn’t he let the police handle this fairly?
Yu Wei was blinded by anger, unable to hear the calm reasoning in Huo Mingwang’s voice.
She was so furious she didn’t want to say anything more—she just wanted to hand Ge Zheng over to the police immediately.
But when the two officers saw Huo Mingwang, they hesitated. Then Chen Liang went up to them, said something she couldn’t hear, and unbelievably—they just left!
This only made her angrier. She wanted to rush over and stop them, but then Huo Mingwang suddenly dragged Ge Zheng in front of her and said coldly, “Apologize.”
Ge Zheng clenched his jaw, veins bulging on his forehead, unable to utter a word. He glared at Yu Wei with a look that could kill.
Yu Wei spat inwardly. Seriously? Who should be the angriest here if not her?
She was the victim, and yet this man named Ge Zheng had the audacity to glare at her like he wanted to eat her alive. What did he mean by that?
“Deaf?” Huo Mingwang’s voice grew even lower and more menacing as he turned to stare at him.
Of course Ge Zheng didn’t want to apologize to Yu Wei, and she could tell. But maybe Huo Mingwang had already scolded him before coming here, because unexpectedly, Ge Zheng finally opened his mouth.
“Sorry.”
The apology was so soft that if the surroundings weren’t completely silent, Yu Wei was sure she wouldn’t have heard it.
As expected, Huo Mingwang wasn’t satisfied: “Didn’t eat today? Can’t open your mouth?”
Ge Zheng’s face turned green as if he’d swallowed a fly. “Sorry! I was wrong! I shouldn’t have smashed your shop!” he roared.
After shouting, his face flushed red with humiliation, and his eyes practically spat fire at Yu Wei.
But Yu Wei was even more upset than him. Looking at Ge Zheng coldly, she said, “I don’t need your apology.”
Such a reluctant apology? She’d rather not have it.
Huo Mingwang saw this and understood she was still furious. Well, who wouldn’t be? Anyone whose shop got trashed for no reason would be livid.
But now wasn’t the time to explain why Ge Zheng had suddenly smashed her shop or why he was so angry.
None of this had been within his expectations. Seeing that Yu Wei clearly had no intention of speaking to him, Huo Mingwang felt uncomfortable too.
He stepped forward, took her icy hand, and looked at the child in her arms—Yu Hui. The little one didn’t even glance at him, snuggling limply in his mother’s embrace for comfort.
Huo Mingwang grew irritated. One hand gripped Yu Wei’s, the other rested on her shoulder. “I’ll send someone to clean this up later. Don’t touch anything.”
There were glass shards everywhere—Yu Wei couldn’t possibly handle it alone.
Seeing her expressionless face, he sighed inwardly, rubbed his son’s head, then turned to glare at Ge Zheng. He planned to drag him back to the factory and deal with him properly.
Ge Zheng had initially wanted to swallow his pride so as not to cause trouble for Huo Mingwang. But when he saw how gentle Huo Mingwang was toward that woman—
And her son! Huo Mingwang even patted her son’s head!
Unbelievable!
Before being dragged away, Ge Zheng spat out, “Yu Wei, you damn bitch!”
Everyone froze. Yu Wei didn’t look at Ge Zheng—she glared at Huo Mingwang instead.
Her entire body radiated anger, ready to explode. “Are you here to apologize or to make more trouble?!”
An enemy is nothing compared to a foolish ally—Huo Mingwang was fuming inside.
He looked at Ge Zheng’s furious face and lost all patience. With a sharp kick, he drove his foot into Ge Zheng’s calf with such force that Ge Zheng dropped to one knee, clutching his leg in agony.
“Apologize!” Huo Mingwang roared. He was truly angry now—not just irritated, but fiercely protective of Yu Wei, the woman who had hurt him six years ago.
Ge Zheng didn’t understand—couldn’t understand.
To him, those two apologies earlier were already the ultimate humiliation. Why was Huo Mingwang acting like the past never happened, as if he had completely forgotten those bitter memories?
But Ge Zheng hadn’t forgotten! If Huo Mingwang had, then he would remember for him!
Huo Mingwang watched Ge Zheng struggle to his feet and said icily, “Ge Zheng, have I been too good to you?”
“Old Huo!” Ge Zheng shouted, his face twisted in conflict.
He didn’t want to cause trouble, didn’t want to make a scene the first time he came to Luzhou. But apologize to that woman? He just couldn’t do it!
Huo Mingwang saw what he was thinking and sneered. “Fine. Then we’ll stay here all day. When you apologize, we leave.”
They stood outside the dessert shop for a long time. Yu Wei didn’t want to freeze out here any longer, so she turned to go inside, but Huo Mingwang blocked her path.
“Move!” Yu Wei said coldly, clutching her son.
He glanced at her stormy face, then barked, “Ge Zheng! Apologize!”
Seeing Yu Wei still giving Huo Mingwang attitude made Ge Zheng’s temper boil over. His face was black as ink, like the rest of them in some “who has the darkest face” contest. Chen Liang watched nervously from the side.
“Come on, brother! Just apologize already! There’s a ton of work waiting at the factory—if we keep wasting time here, we’re screwed!”
Finally, Ge Zheng reacted. He wanted to see who could outlast who. But Huo Mingwang couldn’t afford to waste time—he was busy and had responsibilities, including caring for Mingxia. If work got delayed because of him…
Then he saw Yu Wei’s pale, furious face as she broke free from Huo Mingwang’s hand to head inside. Ge Zheng suddenly shouted:
“I’m sorry, Yu Wei!”
Yu Wei had no intention of accepting his apology, but she also didn’t want to keep standing here.
She was about to lash out, but when she saw Ge Zheng’s ugly, twisted face, a thought struck her… Maybe the original Yu Wei and Ge Zheng had some kind of history? Otherwise, why would he…?
“Chen Liang, stay here. I’ll come back later,” Huo Mingwang ordered. Once Ge Zheng apologized, he wasted no time, yanking him toward the car.
Before getting in, Ge Zheng shot one last venomous glare at the mother and child—only to earn another kick from Huo Mingwang!
The car window slid up, and moments later, they were gone.
Ge Zheng turned to Huo Mingwang, stunned. “Old Huo! We’re just leaving? You’re letting Yu Wei off like that? Do you even know what you’re doing?!”
Huo Mingwang’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. “You don’t need to remind me.”
“So I’m meddling now?” Ge Zheng’s chest heaved. “Don’t tell me you forgot what that woman did to you before!”
“I didn’t forget.”
Ge Zheng exploded. “Didn’t forget?! Then why protect her?! After all these years of brotherhood, you’d kick me for that heartless woman?!”
“What’s a kick?” Huo Mingwang sneered. His face was still grim. “She lost her memory. Forgot everything.”
Ge Zheng’s eyes widened. “What? She forgot?!”
“Yeah.”
He couldn’t sit still, his voice tinged with panic. “No way—don’t tell me you’ve been fooled by that vicious woman! How could she just forget like that? We didn’t forget!”
The more he thought about it, the more wrong it felt. “Even if she forgot, so what? Are you just gonna pretend none of it happened?! Don’t tell me—you still can’t let her go! You still like her?! That kid isn’t even yours—it’s some other guy’s! And you still like her?!”
Huo Mingwang listened to his rapid-fire words like a machine gun and rubbed his forehead helplessly.
“The child is mine.”
Ge Zheng nearly slipped off his chair. “Wha—?!”
Meanwhile, after watching Huo Mingwang take Ge Zheng away, Yu Wei was in a foul mood.
Chen Liang went to find people to help clean up the shop and told Yu Wei not to move, that he would handle everything.
As for those cabinets that Ge Zheng smashed, he said he’d go to the glass factory to get someone to measure and custom-make replacements, and they would also cover today’s business losses.
Watching Chen Liang run back and forth, Yu Wei had no mood to tidy up. She sat behind the cash register with her son in her arms, coldly watching everyone busy at work, as well as the crowd of gossiping onlookers outside.
Her mind was a complete mess.
Something didn’t feel right. If a person who had nothing to do with you suddenly came and smashed up your shop, there had to be an unspeakable reason.
So the only explanation she could think of was that whatever made Ge Zheng lose his mind must have been something the original owner did.
Maybe the original owner did something that made that man so agitated.
But if that’s the case, then it also indirectly means Huo Mingwang actually knew her from the very beginning—yet he never told her.
Thinking back to how he treated her when they first met… and considering he’s a big boss, how could he suddenly fall for a single mom out of nowhere?
No wonder. No wonder…
He said he’d bring his family over, but after all this time, he still hasn’t let her meet them. Doesn’t that mean his family knows her too? And probably doesn’t think well of her?
So it’s not that “the time hasn’t come” like he said, but rather… he doesn’t dare take her to meet them at all?
What happened before she transmigrated? What did the original owner do before going to the countryside as a sent-down youth that would make people react like this just at the sight of her?
But regardless of the truth, one thing was clear—Huo Mingwang definitely knew the original owner! And they were very close!
The shop was a complete wreck after Ge Zheng’s rampage; there was no way to open for business again today. Yu Wei had no mood to make pastries either, so lunch was sent from the state-owned restaurant by Chen Liang. Huo Mingwang didn’t come. According to Chen Liang, the factory was swamped, and he couldn’t get away but would come as soon as he had time.
Yu Wei guessed he was busy dealing with Ge Zheng and didn’t say much. She just took her son home, leaving everything at the shop to Chen Liang.
Even little Yu Hui was upset for a while after the shop was smashed.
Back home, he didn’t even have the mood to open the toys Huo Mingwang had given him. Seeing this, Yu Wei took him to the neighbor Song Xia’s house. The adults were at work, and the twin girls hadn’t started school yet and were doing homework at home.
She let her son play with the two older girls. When Shu Ya and Shu Le said they wanted to play with Yu Hui’s new toys at his house, Yu Wei warmly welcomed them and let the girls come over to play with the new toys.
Once her son’s mood had improved, Yu Wei found an excuse and went out.
“Mommy will be back soon. Huihui, play nicely with your two sisters, okay?”
Yu Hui turned to look at her changing into sneakers and reluctantly said, “Okay.”
Around two in the afternoon, Yu Wei left for Huo Mingwang’s factory, which was located on Guangxia Avenue in the south of the city, about a kilometer from Changqing Road.
It wasn’t far; a short bike ride would get her there.
She had originally thought she would wait for Huo Mingwang to come find her when he had time, but she couldn’t wait anymore. Her mind had been churning all day. She wanted to find him now and get everything clear!
Soon, Yu Wei rode her bicycle to the factory gate. There were two security guards there who stopped her and asked what she wanted.
Yu Wei was straightforward: “I’m here to see your boss.”
“Boss? Which boss?”
“Boss Huo. He should be here, right?” Yu Wei frowned. There weren’t even telephones at this time, so there was no way to call him out to meet her.
The guards looked at each other in surprise, finding this woman a little strange. “You’re here to see our big boss? What for?”
“Something important,” Yu Wei replied.
The two guards looked her up and down, their gaze lingering on her delicate, fair face, before the shorter one said,
“Old Li, you stay here. I’ll go find the boss.”
This grain factory wasn’t a place just anyone could walk into. Even though this woman didn’t look like trouble, the factory had strict rules. If they let in the wrong person, they’d be punished!
The guard jogged inside to find someone and soon came back—with Chen Liang.
“Oh dear, Boss Lady, why are you here?” Chen Liang hurried to the gate, quickly ordered the guards to let her in, and respectfully led her inside. “Boss is busy inside. He was going to see you this afternoon. Why did you come here?”
The two guards exchanged looks as they watched Yu Wei being escorted in with such deference. “What’s going on? Chen Liang called her Boss Lady? Is there gossip to eat?!”
…
Chen Liang brought Yu Wei into a three-story office building. She glanced around as they walked.
The building was an old renovated one. The white paint on the walls was starting to peel, but the place was clean. Inside, there were quite a few people and many rooms, each with signs like “Personnel Department” or “Procurement Department.”
When people saw Chen Liang bringing a beautiful woman inside, someone teased,
“Chen Liang, where did this pretty comrade come from?”
Chen Liang deliberately kept a straight face. “Scram! Got nothing better to do? This is our Boss Lady!”
The man who had been grinning froze instantly. The nearby employees stared at Yu Wei in shock.
Yu Wei didn’t care about the stares. After all, she used to do live streaming—she wasn’t afraid of being looked at. Still, the situation was a bit different now.
Chen Liang had outed her identity as Huo Mingwang’s girlfriend, so she felt a little uncomfortable, though she kept it hidden.
Finally, they reached the third floor. Huo Mingwang was still in a meeting. Chen Liang told her to wait outside. He had many things to do as well, so after a few instructions, he left.
Yu Wei sat alone in the spacious office with Huo Mingwang’s name on the doorplate—it had to be his office.
The space was big, even larger than her living room, though sparsely furnished. Aside from a desk, chairs, and stools, there was just a small sofa set. She sat down—it was quite soft.
She didn’t know when Huo Mingwang would finish. After waiting a long time with no sign of him, Yu Wei got bored and went to stroll in the hallway.
At the end of the third floor was a small window. Looking out, she could see many employees below.
As her gaze wandered casually, she suddenly spotted a familiar figure.
It was Ge Zheng!
He was downstairs, and judging by the way he was walking, he seemed to be heading for the office building. Yu Wei was startled. Just seeing him brought back the unpleasant memories of that morning.
She hurried back toward Huo Mingwang’s office, but before she got far, she heard quick footsteps in the stairwell near the window.
Without thinking, Yu Wei rushed toward the office, but halfway there, a loud voice rang out behind her.
“Yu Wei!”
The sound of her name made her heart jump, her body trembling slightly.
She turned—Ge Zheng. Clearly, he hadn’t expected to see her in Huo Mingwang’s factory either. He immediately strode toward her in long steps.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
Yu Wei quickened her pace toward the office, not wanting to talk to him. But he was faster—his long legs closed the distance, and he grabbed her shoulder, making her shiver as he blocked her way.
“What are you doing here?” Was she here to find Old Huo?
“None of your business.”
Yu Wei lowered her head and tried to slip past him into the office, but his towering figure easily outpaced her and soon pinned her against the wall.
“What are you doing?” Yu Wei’s heart pounded. Was he going to hit her?
Ge Zheng’s feelings were complicated. He did feel like hitting her, but more than that, he wanted to know—was this woman really pretending to be crazy, or was what Huo Mingwang said true… that she really had lost her memory?
“Yu Wei, don’t move. I’m asking you.”
Ask all you want, why swear like that? Ugh!
Yu Wei had no interest in talking to him. She wanted to push him away and leave, but those wolfish green eyes made her too scared to lift a hand.
“Ask what?” she forced herself to sound calm.
“Did you really lose your damn memory?!”
