Pah! What kind of man is this? His wife, who shared his hardships through thick and thin, stayed at home struggling with their child, while this dog of a man goes off to pamper another woman? How could he even think of something like that!
Forget about Song Xia wanting to leave with nothing— even if she took half the property, that’s what she deserves after suffering all these years!
Song Xia didn’t say anything more about leaving empty-handed. Seeing that Yu Wei was speaking up for her, she was so moved that tears welled in her eyes.
After the Lantern Festival, all the shops along the streets had reopened. A few uneventful days passed, yet Huo Mingwang still hadn’t brought his so-called “family” to meet her, nor had he taken her to meet them.
But every day, that man came to pick her and her son up in the morning to go to the shop and sent them home in the afternoon without fail.
She had asked him about it, subtly and directly, a few times. Huo Mingwang only said there was no rush, that he would take her to meet them when the time was right.
Yu Wei didn’t know what he was planning, but she had no choice except to wait patiently.
Yu Hui’s kindergarten started late, a week after the Lantern Festival. The little guy was thrilled to be at home— not only did he have his mom, Xiaobai, and Gu Gu for company, but now there was Uncle Huo too!
That day, the mother and son had just been dropped off by Huo Mingwang to open the shop. Not long after, he hurried off to the factory, saying some boss was coming to discuss business and he needed to oversee it.
Yu Wei didn’t think much of it. Before he left, she gave him a kiss— in the kitchen, of course. She wouldn’t dare let Yu Hui see; as a proper mother, she had her pride!
Huo Mingwang found it amusing. He sucked on her lips hard before leaving, finally satisfied.
Just a few minutes after he left, another car stopped outside the shop. It looked familiar— a black Hongqi sedan. A man got out from the driver’s seat.
“Chen Liang?” Yu Wei tucked the cash away in the drawer and smiled as she walked to the door to greet him.
Behind him followed an unfamiliar man, towering and broad-shouldered. He had to duck slightly to enter— taller than Huo Mingwang, nearly 1.9 meters!
Yu Wei kept her polite smile. “Buying cake?”
Chen Liang greeted her warmly. “Yes, boss lady. I wanted to buy those crispy pastries today, the ones the boss brought home last time. My wife tried them once and loved them. I happened to be passing by this morning, so I thought I’d check if you still have some.”
Crispy pastry? Yu Wei thought for a moment— it must be the Tarta cookies. Huo Mingwang had brought just that one kind last time.
She was about to say they’d need to be made fresh since they had just opened and hadn’t started baking yet, but the tall man behind Chen Liang suddenly turned his head to look at her— and his eyes went wide.
“Yu Wei?!”
The man’s voice trembled with intense emotion, full of disbelief, startling both Yu Wei and Chen Liang, who turned to look at him in confusion.
Yu Wei: Who is this man? How does he know my name?
Chen Liang: This guy the boss brought from up north actually knows Yu Wei?
The man, of course, couldn’t guess their thoughts. His eyes blazed with fury as he stared dead at Yu Wei’s face, unchanged from five or six years ago.
The next second, Yu Hui walked out from the back, tugging her hand softly. “Mommy, my pencil broke. Can you sharpen it for me?”
That sentence completely ignited the fire in Ge Zheng’s heart. His naturally gruff voice, now charged with rage, sounded even more intimidating.
“He’s your son?” Ge Zheng demanded angrily.
Yu Wei thought this man was utterly ridiculous. Why ask questions with such an expression? He looked downright terrifying.
She frowned. “Who are you?”
“Mommy…” The little guy called her softly, shrinking behind her at the sight of Ge Zheng’s fierce glare.
That uncle seems angry. He’s looking at me so fiercely… so scary…
Yu Wei patted her son’s head reassuringly, but Ge Zheng’s eyes followed the motion, his chest heaving violently.
Still baffled, Yu Wei looked at him. Since he came with Chen Liang, she hadn’t considered him a bad person— but the next moment, the man suddenly strode forward and grabbed her wrist.
“Yu Wei!” He practically ground out her name through clenched teeth, his bloodshot eyes terrifying.
Yu Wei furrowed her brows, struggling to break free. “Who are you?!”
When she finally tore her wrist from his grip, he completely lost it.
“Who am I?” His eyes were like fire. “Yu Wei, after just a few years you don’t recognize me?!”
His accent was the same northern dialect as Huo Mingwang’s, but heavier— especially when he spoke through clenched teeth, making it sound even more menacing.
Yu Wei was utterly confused by his furious words. “Have we met before?”
She was certain she had never crossed paths with this man. If he knew her but she didn’t know him, there was only one explanation—
He had ties to the original Yu Wei.
Hearing this, Ge Zheng’s fury exploded. He didn’t know what she was thinking, only that she was clearly pretending not to know him!
He glanced at Yu Hui peeking out from behind her, his face darkening further.
His already dark face turned almost black with rage, a hint of red creeping in. Suddenly, he lunged forward, trying to grab Yu Hui— but Yu Wei, fierce as any mother, yanked her son back in time.
“What are you doing?!” She was livid now and turned to Chen Liang. “Chen Liang, who the hell is this man?!”
Chen Liang had no idea what had gotten into Ge Zheng either. Scratching his head in confusion, he stepped forward to pull him away. “Hey, hey—Ge Zheng, did you mistake—”
“Mistake your damn— I’d never mistake her even if I was dead!”
Before Chen Liang could finish, Ge Zheng erupted like a wild beast, eyes twisted with rage.
He glared at Yu Wei and the boy in the knitted hat, hatred surging as memories flooded back— how Old Huo had cherished her like a treasure, and yet she had heartlessly abandoned him. How it left him broken, how Mingxia grew more withdrawn, how the Huo siblings became the village’s laughingstock!
And now here she was, living well in the city, even having a son with some unknown man! Running a fancy shop!
He was so furious he could spit fire— and he couldn’t hold it back anymore!
Eyes bulging, he scanned the shop, then stormed to the corner, grabbed a broom, and smashed it against the glass counter.
“Ge Zheng!” Chen Liang shouted.
“Ah—!”
Yu Wei cried out, clutching her son and rushing to the door. Chen Liang panicked, scrambling to stop him—
But he was no match for Ge Zheng’s rage-fueled strength. Before Chen Liang even reached him, Ge Zheng shoved him aside with one massive slap, continuing to smash the fragile glass counters.
Shards scattered everywhere. Luckily, the shop had just opened, so there weren’t many cakes inside, minimizing the loss.
But Ge Zheng had gone completely berserk, smashing everything in sight with bloodshot eyes. Little Yu Hui burst into tears, terrified.
“Mommy… Mommy…”
Yu Wei hugged him tight, whispering soothingly. “It’s okay, it’s okay. We’re going to find the police, don’t be scared.”
The boy clung to her neck, tears dripping onto her skin like cold drops of rain.
“Mommy, he broke our counters…”
His muffled voice trembled with distress— he knew those things cost money, and his little heart ached.
Yu Wei patted his back as they ran to the police station, asking for directions along the way. This was her first time there.
The little guy finally calmed down when he realized no one was chasing them anymore. He sniffled but tried to stay strong. “Mommy, I won’t cry.”
“You’re so brave,” Yu Wei murmured, kissing his damp cheek.
The police officers, upright and full of a sense of justice, came immediately after hearing someone smashed her shop. They returned with her to see the scene: a disaster of broken glass.
“Do you know who the man was?” one officer asked.
“I’m not certain, but I think I know where to find someone who knows him,” Yu Wei replied. “I think his name was Ge Zheng. He came with Chen Liang— he must know him.”
She planned to take them to Huo Mingwang’s factory.
But just as they stepped out, a gray car screeched to a halt nearby. Chen Liang got out, followed by Huo Mingwang— and Ge Zheng.
Huo Mingwang dragged Ge Zheng by the arm, his face thunderous. The moment he saw Yu Wei with the police and her pale little boy, the temperature around him seemed to drop several degrees.
“Come here,” he said coldly.
Ge Zheng lowered his head and obediently stood behind him.
Huo Mingwang looked at Yu Wei’s furious face, then at the boy clinging to her shoulder, silent but clearly upset. Fire surged in his chest.
“Yu Wei—”
But before he could say more, Yu Wei snapped, pointing at Ge Zheng. “Officers, it’s him! He’s the one who smashed my shop!”
She sneered coldly. I didn’t even have to find him— he delivered himself to my door! He scared my child— I won’t let this go!
The two officers turned to look— and froze. That man in front, wasn’t he… the big boss of Limin Grain Company?
What the hell was going on?
Before they could speak, Huo Mingwang said stiffly, “I’m sorry. I’ll take care of this. Thank you for coming.”
Yu Wei flared up instantly. “You’ll take care of this? He smashed my shop— why should you be the one to settle it?!”
