Ji Yiqing was staring fixedly at Wang Jinnian, afraid that the faint trace of breath he had might disappear at any moment.
Then he suddenly felt something being stuffed into his mouth. By reflex, he pressed his lips together—and then…
His lips clamped down on Jiu Yue’s finger. Ji Yiqing’s whole body shuddered.
He almost opened his mouth and swallowed Jiu Yue’s finger. When he lowered his head slightly, he saw Jiu Yue looking at him in confusion.
“The taste of this poisoned blood isn’t pleasant. Holding this makes it a lot better—but why did you bite me?”
Ji Yiqing hurriedly let go, his entire face flushing red.
Jiu Yue didn’t care at all, casually wiping her finger on Ji Yiqing’s clothes.
Ji Yiqing stood there in a daze the whole time, as if there was still the warmth of Jiu Yue’s finger lingering on his lips.
Soft… smooth…
But Jiu Yue’s expression was far too frank and open, making his own filthy thoughts seem utterly inappropriate.
His ears and face grew even redder, his whole body feeling as if it were about to explode—he completely forgot to keep watching Wang Jinnian.
Jiu Yue sat down by the table, pushed the medicine packet forward, and said to the anxious Madam Wang and Master Wang, “Hold this in your mouth. The smell of the poisoned blood is pretty awful.”
Madam Wang and Master Wang naturally did as Jiu Yue said and held the medicine.
The two of them stood there nervously, encouraging each other—there was no other way not to.
Jiu Yue’s treatment methods were truly frightening to behold. Could this be some kind of bloodletting therapy?
But they were all on the same broken boat now. The only thing they could do was place all their hope on Jiu Yue.
At this moment, Madam Wang and Master Wang were full of regret—deep, profound regret.
They had been completely stunned by the skill Jiu Yue had displayed and hadn’t thought about the consequences at all.
If they thought about it carefully, the worst outcome would simply be Wang Jinnian dying on the spot.
But whether he died today or tomorrow didn’t seem to make much difference anyway.
Just as they were worrying endlessly, Wang Jinnian—who was lying on the bed, bristling like a hedgehog from all the needles—let out a faint groan.
It sounded as if he were in great pain.
Madam Wang’s and Master Wang’s eyes widened abruptly.
For over a month now, Wang Jinnian had been lying on the bed in a daze, completely lifeless.
If not for the faint rise and fall of his chest, they would have long believed that his soul had already returned to bliss.
And now—he had actually made a sound.
Didn’t that mean Wang Jinnian was truly getting better?
Madam Wang burst into tears of joy, tightly gripping Master Wang’s sleeve. “Master… Jinnian seemed to make a sound just now.”
Master Wang had heard it too and was overjoyed beyond measure.
At the same time, though, his joy was mixed with bitterness—did this mean that he truly could no longer have children?
Wang Jinnian was his only descendant.
And on top of that, he had really been cuckolded.
There was no time to think further. After waiting a while longer—
Jiu Yue stood up and walked to Wang Jinnian’s side. She saw that Wang Jinnian’s eyes were only half-open; he clearly didn’t have the strength to open them fully.
She called out, “Is the medicinal bath ready?”
Steward Wang hurried in at a trot. “Miss Jiu Yue, everything is ready.”
Jiu Yue covered her nose with one hand and swiftly removed all the silver needles with the other.
As for the small cuts left behind, they were nothing to worry about.
After pulling out the needles, she glanced at Ji Yiqing and frowned—it smelled terrible. Better not let Ji Yiqing handle this.
“Carry him to the tub and hold him there. Remember—the medicinal water must submerge past his neck.”
Steward Wang immediately nodded and quickly summoned two servants to carefully lift Wang Jinnian.
Ji Yiqing walked up behind Jiu Yue and raised his hand to cover her eyes.
Jiu Yue rolled her eyes. With Wang Jinnian’s scrawny, chicken-like physique, she truly wasn’t interested at all.
Ji Yiqing, however, simply believed that impropriety should not be seen.
Wang Jinnian was taken to soak in the medicinal bath, with Jiu Yue and Ji Yiqing following along.
Once he soaked, the foul smell from Wang Jinnian’s body mixed with the medicine, becoming even more unbearable.
Jiu Yue stuck a few more needles into the top of Wang Jinnian’s head. “Change the water once it cools.”
Steward Wang nodded repeatedly.
Jiu Yue rubbed her stomach. “I’m hungry.”
Steward Wang hurriedly said, “The master and madam have instructed that food be prepared. Please follow me.”
You should’ve said so earlier—her stomach was about to start growling.
Seated in the main hall, Jiu Yue clicked her tongue twice. As expected of the richest merchant—this food was on a whole different level.
After coming here for three days, Jiu Yue finally got to eat something decent.
Seeing that Jiu Yue didn’t even lift her head as she ate, Ji Yiqing could only keep using the serving chopsticks to replenish the dishes in her bowl as they dwindled.
No talking while eating. Neither of them spoke, each quietly finishing the meal.
After eating, Jiu Yue patted her stomach. Heavens—if she couldn’t eat like this every meal in the future, what meaning would life even have?
“Oh, you can feed Young Master Wang some rice porridge and water. As for the water, let him drink the one I prepared with medicine—keep replenishing it for him.”
Steward Wang had stayed behind specifically to attend to the two of them. Hearing this, he was overjoyed. “Yes, yes.”
As long as the young master could eat and drink, nothing else was a problem.
After all, for over a month now, Wang Jinnian had been barely sustained on various soups, barely able to swallow anything. That was why he had wasted away to such a state.
While Jiu Yue and Ji Yiqing were eating, Master Wang went to the washroom to take a look at Wang Jinnian.
Seeing that the sickly yellow and bluish tinge was gradually fading from his face, and that the look of suffering had eased considerably—
As someone who had long been decisive and ruthless in business, Master Wang finally steadied himself.
And at last, he began to think about purging those around him.
The concubine and the younger brother had to be dealt with—as well as the servants in the household who had betrayed their master.
When he stepped out again, the sorrowful Master Wang now exuded a terrifying aura.
To rise from an unknown peddler to a powerful merchant in one region—Master Wang’s methods were never ordinary.
All these years, Master Wang had never sought pleasure for its own sake. Madam Wang had supported him through hardship in their early days.
It could be said that their present success was the result of the two of them supporting each other.
The concubine had only been taken because Wang Jinnian’s health was truly terrible, and it looked as if the Wang family would have no heir.
With no other choice, they had taken her in.
When the couple went out, a single glance between them was enough—they both knew exactly what the other intended to do.
Though he was his own younger brother, with their parents long gone, and though Master Wang had promised his parents to take good care of him—
That brother had tried to take his life.
How could he possibly show mercy?
First, he swiftly ordered people to search for evidence.
Second, the traitorous servants would be dealt with.
The adulterous concubine would be beaten to death…
Tonight, the Wang household was destined to be drenched in blood.
Perhaps this was the tragedy of this era—human life was treated like weeds, cheap and disposable.
Concubines might appear glamorous, but a concubine was still a slave—buyable and sellable. If they angered the master’s household, being sold off or beaten to death was no different from the fate of ordinary servants.
Yet Master Wang searched the entire Qing Shui County and failed to find any trace of his brother—he must have caught wind of things and fled.
But Master Wang was not someone who would let matters rest.
He would not kill his brother—but once found, lifelong confinement would be the only mercy he would show to a blood relative.
