As soon as everyone stepped out of the tunnel, they stopped in their tracks, stunned by the sight before them.
Outside, it had been a dark and damp underground cave. Yet here lay a valley bathed in sunshine, filled with birdsong and the fragrance of flowers.
Warm sunlight streamed down from a massive sinkhole high above the valley, illuminating the entire place as bright as day. The air inside the valley was warm like spring, forming a stark contrast with the cold gloom outside.
A clear stream flowed windingly from the depths of the valley, passing through neatly arranged terraced fields and medicinal gardens before finally merging into a jade-green lake.
As far as the eye could see, the land was covered with rare flowers and exotic herbs. Many of the plants were ones Jiang Suisui had only seen in ancient books—or had never even heard of before. They grew here freely in dazzling colors, competing in beauty. The air was filled with a rich and complex medicinal fragrance; just a single breath made one feel refreshed and invigorated.
In the distance, nestled against the mountain, stood an ancient-looking village. Dozens of wooden and stone houses were scattered neatly along the hillside. Thin trails of smoke rose from the rooftops, giving the place a vivid sense of daily life.
This was no hidden wilderness deep in the mountains.
It was clearly a secluded paradise, cut off from the outside world.
“So beautiful…” Bai Ling’er sighed sincerely. She had grown up in Jinling and was accustomed to elegant pavilions and grand mansions, yet she had never seen scenery so primitive and full of life.
Gu Xuan, meanwhile, broke free from Jiang Suisui’s hand and ran across the grassy field filled with strange flowers and plants like a colt freed from its reins.
“Slow down! Don’t touch those plants randomly!” Jiang Suisui quickly called out, worried that some might be poisonous.
“Don’t worry, Master of the Spring,” the High Priestess said with a smile. “Although most of the plants in the valley are medicinal herbs, they are mild in nature and not highly poisonous. The children can play freely.”
The Guardian Clan’s village lay at the center of the valley.
The villagers seemed to have already received the news. One by one, they came out of their homes and gathered at the village entrance, watching the group of outsiders with curiosity and reverence—especially Jiang Suisui, who was being personally supported by the High Priestess.
After entering the village, Jiang Suisui noticed that although the houses were simple, they were kept extremely clean. In every household courtyard, various medicinal herbs were laid out to dry.
The villagers’ way of life seemed frozen in time from several centuries ago—men farming and hunting, women weaving and gathering herbs, living entirely self-sufficiently.
The High Priestess arranged for Jiang Suisui’s group to stay in the largest stone house in the village. It had originally been used for clan meetings and ritual ceremonies.
“Master of the Spring and our honored guests, please rest here first. We have already prepared food and clean clothes,” the High Priestess said thoughtfully.
Soon several Guardian Clan women brought steaming hot food.
The meal was simple—roasted beast meat, some unknown root vegetables, and a large pot of soup made from various mushrooms. But the ingredients were extremely fresh, and the taste was surprisingly delicious.
Especially the mushroom soup. After drinking it, a warm current spread throughout the body, and most of the fatigue from the journey disappeared.
After the meal, Gu Yan and Wei Ziqian inspected the surrounding environment. Only after confirming everything was safe did they finally relax.
Meanwhile, Jiang Suisui was invited by the High Priestess into an inner room of the stone house.
“Master of the Spring, you must have many questions,” the High Priestess said as she poured her a cup of hot tea brewed from flower petals. The tea was pale pink and emitted a light, sweet fragrance.
“I really do want to know everything—about Medicine King Valley, about the Guardian Clan, and… about this bracelet,” Jiang Suisui said honestly.
The High Priestess nodded and sank into a long memory.
She told Jiang Suisui that their ancestors had once been the most loyal guards of the first Medicine King. In his later years, the Medicine King had seen through the world’s affairs and did not wish his medical knowledge and life’s work to be exploited by outside powers and political struggles.
So he led his followers to this hidden valley and established Medicine King Valley.
Here they multiplied and lived in peace, protecting the Medicine King’s legacy and the most important treasure in the valley—the Spring of Life.
“The mission passed down through our clan for generations,” the High Priestess said while looking at Jiang Suisui, “is to guard this place until the next Master of the Spring, the one wearing the ‘Spring-Heart Bracelet,’ arrives.”
“The Medicine King prophesied that the new Master would bring change to Medicine King Valley and would pass on the Medicine King’s medical path in an entirely new way.”
Jiang Suisui fell silent.
She thought of her spiritual spring space, the new crops she had promoted in Woniu Village, and her long-held desire to improve the backward state of medicine and agriculture in this era.
Perhaps none of it was coincidence.
“Then… have you all lived here all this time without ever going outside?” Jiang Suisui asked.
A trace of bitterness flashed across the High Priestess’s face.
“It’s not that we don’t want to leave—it’s that we cannot. Our bloodline carries a curse that prevents us from leaving Medicine King Valley for more than a hundred li. And… in recent years, the health of our clan members has been getting worse and worse.”
Just as the two were talking, a burst of children’s laughter suddenly came from outside.
Jiang Suisui walked to the doorway and saw Gu Xuan and Bai Ling’er playing with several Guardian Clan children in the open area at the village entrance.
One sturdy little boy from the Guardian Clan seemed to want to show friendliness. He pulled something out from his clothes and stuffed it into Gu Xuan’s hands. It was a small bird woven from unknown vines, crafted so delicately that it looked almost alive.
Gu Xuan, in return, took out a wooden spinning top he had made himself and showed the boy how to play with it.
Meanwhile, a little girl wearing a skirt made of animal fur ran up to Jiang Suisui. She looked up at her with bright black-and-white eyes.
A little shyly, she handed Jiang Suisui the flower she had been holding carefully in her hands.
It was a flower Jiang Suisui had never seen before. Its petals overlapped in layers like crystal carvings, and under the sunlight it emitted a faint, soft glow.
Jiang Suisui bent down and accepted the flower.
“Thank you,” she said with a smile.
The little girl smiled shyly and ran away.
Holding the glowing flower in her hand, Jiang Suisui looked at the peaceful and harmonious valley around her.
Suddenly, a strange feeling rose in her heart.
It felt as though this place was her true home.
