That kick struck cleanly—but the figure in front of him didn’t suffer any injury at all. Instead, it used the force of the impact to spring backward and retreat straight from the living room into the kitchen.

Just as Che Qianzi was about to chase after him, the figure suddenly vanished without a trace.

Before the little Taoist could react, he felt a chill at his neck.

A dagger was already pressed against his throat—and the person had appeared behind him.

A cold voice rang out:

“Move even a little, and your head will separate from your neck. And don’t scream either—you wouldn’t want to wake the woman and child in the bedroom, would you? You’ve already seen Du Qian’s corpse. I’m not incapable of killing women.”

Che Qianzi usually fought like he had nothing to lose—but this time, his own head was at stake. He didn’t dare gamble.

He let out a soft snort and said,

“So it’s you causing all this chaos. Coming to Fatty Sun’s house in the middle of the night—you definitely aren’t here with good intentions. Let’s talk this out. I’m already in your hands—do whatever you want with me. But let the family in the bedroom go. You can’t afford to provoke Fatty Sun’s father-in-law…”

“You’ve misunderstood. I’m here to show sincerity.”

As he spoke, a hand reached around from behind Che Qianzi, holding an open large briefcase.

Under the faint moonlight from outside the window, Che Qianzi saw it was filled to the brim with gold bars.

Although Sun Desheng had already given him quite a lot of money before, most of it hadn’t actually ended up under his name.

Seeing that full bag of gold bars, Che Qianzi’s breathing quickened.

Almost instinctively, he grabbed two pieces.

Only after taking them did he snap back to his senses—but when he turned to throw them back, the person behind him had already withdrawn the bag.

“These two little yellow fish are your meeting gift,” the voice chuckled softly.

“We’re meeting too early. Go back and act like nothing happened. Take the gold bars and go sleep.”

Now holding the gold, Che Qianzi’s tone wasn’t as firm anymore.

“What do you even mean? Didn’t you already show sincerity by sending that whole jar of formalin earlier? That thing wasn’t cheap, right? Why are you giving gifts twice—what, once for solar calendar, once for lunar calendar?”

The person behind him said quietly,

“Du Qian was my gesture of intent. I only meant to apologize for accidentally frightening Madam Sun, so I sent the culprit to Director Sun.”

“Now this is sincerity. I hope Madam Sun can forgive me.”

Che Qianzi let out a cold laugh.

“And what about me? Your underlings pretended to be ghosts and even impersonated my master to scare me. How do you settle that account?”

The voice replied,

“The gold in your hands is compensation. Or do you want another bar?”

At that, Che Qianzi exploded.

“Another what—?! You gave Fatty Sun a whole suitcase of gold, and I only get two pieces? And I only got them because I was lucky? If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t even get these two? You’re looking down on me way too much!”

“I don’t want these gold bars anymore. Take them and buy yourself a grave plot!”

In his anger, he forgot there was still a dagger against his throat.

He suddenly twisted around, trying to smash the gold bars at the figure.

But the moment he turned—

The figure was gone.

Only the open briefcase of gold remained on the floor.

At that moment, the bedroom light turned on.

A sleepy Sun Desheng walked out, rubbing his eyes as he fumbled with his sleep pants on the way to the bathroom.

Seeing someone standing in the living room, he screamed in shock.

“Who—?! Brother, it’s you?! Why are you wandering around the living room in the middle of the night…”

As he spoke, he switched on the living room light.

There stood Che Qianzi, holding two gold bars—and a suitcase full of gold at his feet.

Embarrassed, Che Qianzi quickly shoved the gold back into the bag.

“No, it’s nothing! Those two yellow fish—gold bars—he gave them to me. I didn’t want them!”

“Then don’t want them,” Sun Desheng said irritably. “Stop yelling—you’ll wake your sister-in-law.”

He didn’t even look at the suitcase. Compared to gold bars, he clearly cared more about his wife.

He pointed at Che Qianzi.

“Go back to your room. I’m going to change pants. I’ll be right there…”

Only then did Che Qianzi notice the wet patch on Sun Desheng’s crotch.

A few moments later, after hearing what had happened in Che Qianzi’s room, Sun Desheng’s expression became strange.

He didn’t ask for details. Instead, he took out his phone and dialed a number.

“Old Tu, someone came into my house. You know about it?”

From the other end came Tu An’s voice.

“The one from the hospital who tried to kill Director Ren? He wasn’t targeting Madam Shao Yi. He even brought a suitcase of gold, so I didn’t interfere.”

“Director Wu’s exact order was: just protect Madam Shao. Everything else—even if the sky falls—is none of your business.”

Sun Desheng rolled his eyes.

“Did he say what happens if I get killed by that guy? What happens to my wife then?”

There was a pause on the other end.

Then Tu An replied calmly,

“He did.”

“If you die, contact Shen La immediately.”

“Arrange for him to marry your wife. Your daughter will be adopted by him.”

Before he could finish speaking, Sun Desheng hung up.

Che Qianzi was stunned.

After thinking for a while, he tried to console him awkwardly.

“Fatty… look on the bright side. Your father-in-law meant well. Didn’t you say before that if anything happened to you, Shen La would be the best person to take care of your wife and kid? It’s just a matter of sooner or later…”

Sun Desheng let out a cold laugh.

“If it weren’t for the fact you’re my brother and I know you can’t talk properly, I’d throw you out the window right now.”

He stormed out of the room carrying the suitcase of gold bars.

Watching his back, Che Qianzi muttered,

“There are two bars in there that were mine…”

After this chaotic episode, the disappointed little Taoist lay back down.

He tossed and turned for a while, and finally—exhausted from the whole day—fell asleep.

No one knew how long he slept. When he opened his eyes again, it was already late afternoon the next day.

Still groggy, he slowly realized he was in Sun Desheng’s house and sat up.

Walking out of the room, he found the house empty.

Where had the family of three gone? Were they really going to file for divorce?

Just as he was wondering, the landline phone rang in the living room.

After hesitating for a moment, he picked it up.

Sun Desheng’s voice came through:

“Brother, you finally woke up. Your sister-in-law and I took your niece to get vaccinated. There’s food in the fridge—just heat it up.”

Before he could finish, another voice suddenly came through the phone:

“Mr. Sun Desheng, your safe has been opened. Please take your key.”

Sun Desheng’s voice returned:

“Alright, I’m done. It’s our turn now—we’ll be back soon.”

Click.

The call ended.

Che Qianzi stood there in silence for a moment.

Then he muttered under his breath:

“So the three of them went to deposit gold at the bank and told me they were getting vaccines…”

“And there were two—or three—gold bars in there that were mine…”
