After hanging up the phone, Che Qianzi sat in frustration for quite a while. Two gold bars had just disappeared like that.
But before long, hunger took over, and he didn’t have the energy to dwell on it anymore. First, he needed to fill his stomach.
Che Qianzi had been able to cook since he was eight. Besides feeding himself, he also had to take care of Kong Dalong’s meals. Cooking wasn’t difficult for him.
He didn’t touch the prepared food in the fridge. Using only the ingredients inside, the little Taoist managed to whip up a full spread of six dishes and a soup.
Just as he was about to dig in, Sun Desheng and his family of three returned.
They came back carrying several large shopping bags. Seeing the table full of dishes, both Sun Desheng and his wife were surprised.
“Not bad, brother—you’ve been hiding this skill?” Shao Yiyi walked over first. After seeing the full table, she said in shock, “If I’d known you could cook like this, I wouldn’t have embarrassed myself last time… stir-fried three vegetables, pot-braised pork, stewed ribs with beans… wait, I didn’t even buy ribs recently. This ‘rib’—is Spanish ham placed underneath? Brother, that’s eaten raw…”
“Alright, eat later. Your brother and I bought you some clothes—go try them on first. If they don’t fit, we’ll exchange them.”
Shao Yiyi, as always, treated Che Qianzi like family. She pulled him straight into his room, bringing in more than a dozen bags of clothes of all sizes.
Only then did the little Taoist realize—all of this was for him.
After pushing him into the room, Shao Yiyi went to clean up the kitchen he had turned upside down.
Sun Desheng sat on Che Qianzi’s bed and pointed at the bags, smiling.
“All picked by your sister-in-law. Even my outfits are chosen by her. Since we’re out in society now, we need proper clothes. Try this suit first… there’s also one for formal events, but that has to be custom-made.”
Looking at the pile of clothes and shoes, Che Qianzi felt a bit comforted.
He treated it as if he had spent those two gold bars on this. After all, those two gold bars weighed more than a jin combined—more than enough to cover all of this.
He forced a small smile and said politely,
“Why are you buying me clothes? I already have some… all this clothing and shoes probably costs five or six thousand…”
As he spoke, he opened the suit bag and glanced at the price tag.
The number made him freeze.
An 8 followed by so many zeros.
He rubbed his eyes and counted again.
Ten thousand, hundred thousand, thousand… eight… eighty thousand?!
“Eighty thousand yuan for one suit? Are you two insane?! My two gold bars are basically gone…”
After seeing the price, he didn’t even dare put the clothes on anymore. He checked the other items—casual outfit: 16,000. Sneakers: over 10,000. Even the belt: over 10,000.
Add everything together, and two gold bars were nowhere near enough.
Seeing Che Qianzi’s shocked expression, Sun Desheng chuckled.
“Brother, you just came into society, so we didn’t get you anything too extravagant. Just wear these for now. The clothes are from me, and your sister-in-law picked out a watch as her welcome gift.”
He pulled out a small box from one of the bags, opened it, and revealed a clearly expensive wristwatch.
Che Qianzi didn’t even dare look at the price. For the first time, he refused a gift.
He stepped back.
“Don’t… this is too expensive. My entire wardrobe for the past twenty years combined isn’t worth one suit. This is already hundreds of thousands worth of stuff—I can’t wear this out…”
“My brother gives you clothes, and you won’t wear them?” Sun Desheng laughed, then suddenly pulled out two strange-looking keys.
He placed them into Che Qianzi’s hand.
“These are keys to a safety deposit box at XX Bank. While you were sleeping, your sister-in-law and I opened an account for you. The fifty gold bars from last night, plus the small artifacts from the underground tomb last time, are all inside.”
“Remember—the box number is your birthday. The bank only recognizes the key, not the person. Keep it safe. Don’t lose it.”
Che Qianzi was stunned.
He had never expected Sun Desheng to be this generous.
“All of that… is for me?”
“Not all,” Sun Desheng said casually. “The gold bars were originally given to me. I just passed them on to you—what’s wrong with that?”
He continued,
“Besides that, I’ve already talked with Director Ren and Director Yang. From the Guangdong operation last time, the Bureau kept ten percent of the underground finds. Half of that will be converted into cash and given to you personally.”
“It’ll take time to process, and taxes still need to be deducted, so the exact amount isn’t finalized yet.”
Hearing this, Che Qianzi started sweating.
He had thought Sun Desheng’s earlier promise was just talk. Now hearing it directly, he suddenly felt the clothes didn’t seem expensive at all.
“This won’t work. I barely did anything last time—I can’t take so much money,” he said quickly. “Let’s split it. You take the bigger share…”
“What kind of person do you think your brother is?” Sun Desheng said sternly, though still smiling.
“What’s yours is yours. If I can’t even give you this little bit, can I still call myself your brother? Take it. Take it.”
Che Qianzi was deeply moved.
He accepted the keys and the enormous fortune in silence.
Then he asked,
“I still don’t understand… why are you so good to me? Do I look like some relative of yours? Like your father or something?”
“Don’t talk nonsense!” Sun Desheng laughed and kicked him lightly.
“I’ll say it again—me, Li Zi, and you. We’re brothers. No blood relation, but closer than blood. The only thing I won’t share is my wife and kid. Everything else, I’d give to you.”
“Oh right, your sister-in-law and I haven’t eaten properly yet—we’ll try your cooking.”
“You change your clothes. We’re eating in your room.”
With that, Sun Desheng happily walked out to call his wife and child to the meal, leaving Che Qianzi alone in his room, deeply moved.
Che Qianzi’s cooking was unexpectedly excellent—even better than Shao Yiyi’s.
The family praised the food while eating.
Just then, someone knocked on the door.
Shao Yiyi swallowed her food and went to open it.
At the entrance stood Vice Director Xiao Yifeng of Division Five.
After inviting him in, she said to Sun Desheng:
“Fatty, Vice Director Xiao is here. He’s looking for you.”
Sun Desheng stood up and walked out smiling, pulling Xiao Yifeng along.
“Old Xiao, what a rare guest. Excuse the mess at home—let’s go talk in my brother’s room so the women can clean up. What’s going on? Something happened at the bureau?”
Xiao Yifeng lowered his voice.
“It’s not official business… it’s personal. My master is dying. The thing you promised me—it needs to be done as soon as possible.”
