Sun Desheng smiled and said, “Director Ren, you’ll get used to it once you’ve joined the Bureau of Investigation. Everyone starts off scared like that. Even Director Yang went through it step by step. It’s nothing serious. When you’ve got nothing to do, go sleep in some deserted graveyard for a couple of nights to build courage. I’m telling you, as long as you don’t end up with a mental breakdown, your guts will toughen up sooner or later…”

Ren Rong let out a dry laugh and didn’t continue the topic. He changed the subject instead.

“Anyway, at least the case is finally closed. That woman got what she deserved, and I can finally breathe easier. But that so-called expert she hired behind the scenes—you still need to keep an eye on him. We won’t have true closure until he’s caught.”

Sun Desheng nodded.

“This guy isn’t simple. I’m not even talking about his techniques. Just the way he set everything up step by step—drawing us away in the end so he could strike at you in the hospital. If Tu An hadn’t suddenly appeared, Director Ren, you’d probably already be lying in the morgue…”

He yawned loudly as he finished speaking.

Sun Desheng rubbed his eyes and glanced at Che Qianzi, who was already fast asleep beside him. The little Taoist hadn’t slept well the night before and had been exhausted all day—he finally couldn’t hold on and fell asleep sitting upright.

Sun Desheng patted his shoulder.

“Brother, let’s go home and sleep. Wake up. Or I’ll find a hotel nearby and we’ll crash there for the night. Hey, brother—open your eyes, the elixir of immortality has arrived.”

At that last line, Che Qianzi finally opened his eyes slightly, half-asleep.

“Immortality… do I pick it up with my ID card or my household registration book… can I get an extra one? I need to save one for my old man… Fatty, you taste it first and tell me if it’s salty…”

“Alright, at least you still remember your master Kong Dalong,” Sun Desheng laughed.

He picked up a teacup from the table, poured some water into his hand, and wiped Che Qianzi’s face.

“Come on, follow me and find a place to rest. I’ll think of a way to get you that immortality thing later.”

The cold water snapped Che Qianzi awake a little. He yawned and followed Sun Desheng and the others out of the director’s office.

As they were leaving, Sun Desheng turned back and said to Ren Rong:

“One more thing, Director Ren. If I come back to be your deputy, which office are you planning to assign me?”

Ren Rong understood what he meant immediately. He pointed at the desk in front of him.

“What office? This one. It was originally yours anyway—just returning it to its rightful owner. I can manage anywhere. Worst case, I’ll just squeeze into Old Yang’s office with him. We can keep each other company and build courage.”

With his old office key back in hand, Sun Desheng left satisfied.

He went to Division One to pick up his wife and child. Seeing the exhausted mother and daughter, he gave a wry smile and took his sleeping daughter from Shao Yiyi’s arms.

“We should find a place to rest first. You’ve both been through a lot this time. At least it’s all settled now—you don’t have to keep worrying.”

“Let’s go home,” Shao Yiyi said, holding his arm. “No place is more comforting than home.”

“You don’t need to worry about me when you’re out there doing things. Who am I? I’m the niece of Wu Rendi. Who would dare mess with me?”

Then she added seriously,

“But you, Fatty—don’t get careless just because you’re clever. Always remember, you’ve got a wife and child behind you.”

At that moment, Che Qianzi had already woken up again. Seeing the couple being affectionate, he awkwardly said,

“I won’t go to your place. I still have a dorm anyway. I’ll sleep there. I’m sensible—I won’t interrupt you two having a second child.”

Shao Yiyi’s face immediately turned red.

“You little brat, what are you even talking about? Stop spouting nonsense. Come with us—you’ve only just settled into the room I prepared for you. You can’t just stay for one day. Li Zi, you come too.”

Shen La in the back shook his head, checking his watch.

“Forget it. I’ve got breakfast plans with Xiao Zhao tomorrow. It’s too far from you guys. I’ll just find a hotel near her place.”

“Li Zi, why are you so old-fashioned? You’re not as open-minded as the rest of us,” Sun Desheng grinned.

“Don’t stay in a hotel. Just stay at Xiao Zhao’s place. And if you’re having breakfast, let her cook it for you tomorrow morning.”

“Big Sun, that’s going too far,” Shen La said awkwardly, glancing at Shao Yiyi. He quickly walked toward the exit.

“Tomorrow I’m going out with Xiao Zhao. Don’t bother me if nothing important happens.”

“Even if something important happens, I won’t bother you,” Sun Desheng chuckled.

He then turned to Tu An, who had just come out of the opposite office.

“Old Tu, ride with me. By the way, did Director Wu say when he’s coming back before he left?”

“He didn’t say, and I didn’t dare ask,” Tu An replied.

“But it’s nothing major on their end. Probably a day or two, he’ll be back.”

“Hope he comes back soon…” Sun Desheng muttered.

Soon after, he left the Bureau of Investigation with his wife and child.

They drove home in his business car. Tu An, as always, did not enter Sun Desheng’s home—after confirming that Madam Sun had returned safely, he went back to his own place downstairs.

After a simple meal, Sun Desheng and his wife put the child to bed.

Che Qianzi also went to his room, lying down to rest.

But surprisingly, even though he was exhausted, he couldn’t fall asleep.

Just moments ago he had been so tired he could barely keep his eyes open—but now his mind was unusually clear. Everything that had happened over the past few days replayed in his head like a film.

Only now did he understand what it meant to be so exhausted that you can’t sleep.

He tossed and turned for over an hour before finally getting up.

He suddenly remembered there was some old Moutai liquor in Sun Desheng’s cabinet. If he couldn’t sleep, he might as well have a drink—maybe the alcohol would knock him out.

Afraid of disturbing the couple, Che Qianzi quietly opened his door and tiptoed toward the cabinet.

But just as he opened the door, he suddenly froze.

In the living room, there was a tall, thin figure standing there.

That person clearly hadn’t expected Che Qianzi to be awake either—much less come out in the middle of the night looking for alcohol.

The two of them locked eyes.

Then Che Qianzi’s wild temper flared instantly.

He lunged at the figure without hesitation.

When he reached the person, he suddenly struck with full force, lifting his leg and aiming a brutal kick straight at the groin.

But to his surprise—

The impact landed solidly… yet something felt off, like something was missing from the sensation…
