Although he only saw that single line, Xiao Yifeng took a deep breath.
Then he blew gently toward the ashes of the bamboo slip.
A gust of wind swept through and scattered them into the air.
Watching the ash drift away, Vice Director Xiao finally relaxed slightly.
Just as he turned to leave, he suddenly froze.
The old man who should have already left the building—Kong Dalong—was standing silently right behind him.
Xiao Yifeng had not sensed his presence at all.
At that moment of shock, Kong Dalong smiled and spoke first.
“You must be Vice Director Xiao, right? We’ve met before—at An Da Building. You didn’t say much back then.”
“We did meet. In the ICU ward,” Xiao Yifeng replied quickly, steadying himself.
He deliberately avoided mentioning An Da Building and instead said:
“I went to visit Che Qianzi and Sun Desheng. You even asked me to bring a juicer. You said you’d reimburse me, but I still haven’t seen the money.”
“A miser…” Kong Dalong chuckled.
“Tell me, what are you doing here? Don’t tell me you followed this old man all the way from the hospital.”
“No… that can’t be right. I checked carefully before I left—no one was following me.”
“Then you must have followed the two Grand Masters. No… that’s not right either. Their abilities are far above mine; they would have noticed you.”
“That means you were following them. But a Vice Director of the Anomaly Bureau tied to those two Grand Masters? Still doesn’t fit…”
Hearing Kong Dalong list out his deductions one by one, Xiao Yifeng’s mind began to churn violently.
Who exactly was this old man?
How could he see through him so easily?
He had worked in the Bureau for years without ever being exposed—but after only a few encounters with this old man, it felt like his entire identity was already being peeled open.
Before Kong Dalong finished speaking, Xiao Yifeng suddenly cut in.
“Then what about you, Mr. Kong?”
“That bamboo slip you just burned—it was shown to the two Grand Masters, wasn’t it?”
“You deliberately destroyed it, yet didn’t fully scatter it… and by coincidence, I saw the most important line.”
“Were you waiting for me to pass that line on?”
“‘My son is entrusted to you, I hope you will protect his life in full…’”
“Which ‘son’ is that? The surname Zhao, Qian, Sun, Li—or Xu? Or is it really Xu?”
Kong Dalong looked at him with a hint of surprise.
Then he nodded meaningfully.
“I underestimated you. You’re more interesting than I thought.”
“Alright then. I won’t interfere with you, and you don’t block my path. Let’s pretend you were never here.”
“Since you’re so clever, I’ll say something honest.”
“Guang Ren and Huoshan are both one-in-a-million talents. You’re walking on multiple boats—be careful. One misstep and you’ll drown along with them.”
“I don’t understand what you mean, Mr. Kong,” Xiao Yifeng replied with a faint smile.
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave. The Bureau has a new Director now—it’s a bad time to be careless.”
“Go on then.”
Kong Dalong stepped aside, making way for him.
As Xiao Yifeng walked past, Kong Dalong couldn’t help but add:
“If one day something happens to Che Qianzi, and you’re able to lend a hand… then please do.”
“Take it as me owing you a favor. If you agree, then in the future, if you run into trouble, I’ll help you too. How about it?”
Xiao Yifeng stopped.
He glanced at him.
“Mr. Kong, why do you think I have the ability to help at all? There are plenty of white-haired elites in the Sixth Office—any one of them is stronger than me. You should be asking Yang Jun, Yang Xiao, or Tu An.”
“They may have strength,” Kong Dalong said with a smile, “but you’re far more interesting.”
He pulled out a small card from his pocket.
It was a business card for an escort service, picked up from a cheap hotel he had once stayed in. He had kept it all this time.
Now, unexpectedly, it came in handy.
He took out a pen and wrote a phone number on the back.
“Sometimes the Bureau won’t be able to handle everything. When that time comes, call this number.”
“Remember—this is a one-time favor. Don’t waste it.”
He slipped the card into Xiao Yifeng’s pocket.
“Since you’ll be asking me for help someday, then I hope you’ll also take care of Che Qianzi a bit more.”
Xiao Yifeng took the card without hesitation.
“If that day comes, I, Xiao Yifeng, will risk my life to protect him.”
He bowed slightly, then left the rooftop without looking back.
Kong Dalong watched his departing figure.
“The Anomaly Bureau really is full of hidden dragons and crouching tigers,” he murmured.
“Who would’ve thought that besides Sun Desheng, there’s another interesting one.”
“I just hope you don’t capsize too early…”
Then he walked to the edge of the rooftop and leapt down.
Halfway through his fall, his body suddenly vanished into thin air.
News of Sun Desheng waking up spread quickly.
The next evening, Yang Shujie, still in a wheelchair, personally came to the hospital to visit Sun Desheng and Che Qianzi.
Seeing that Sun Desheng was fine, he finally relaxed.
He grabbed Sun Desheng’s hand.
“Desheng, you have no idea how badly you scared me… it’s good you’re alright.”
“Do you know? Director Ren has already taken all the credit for An Da Building and pinned the blame on you.”
“And not just that—he even reported me, saying the Bureau lost control at the beginning because I failed to manage my team properly…”
He glanced at Shen La and Che Qianzi, then lowered his voice:
“Back when you were dealing with me, you were ruthless… I didn’t even dare stay in the Bureau after dark, popping heart medication like candy.”
“You can’t let me take all the hits this time…”
Sun Desheng smiled faintly.
“I don’t understand what you’re talking about, Director Yang.”
“I didn’t even know what happened back then. Don’t pin everything on me.”
“As for Director Ren—I actually quite like him. Let him take the credit if he wants. I’m not even with the Bureau anymore.”
Just then, Ren Rong walked in wearing formal attire.
Seeing that Yiyi wasn’t in the room, he quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
“Director Yang, you’re here too,” he said with a smile. “Sun Desheng, I’m here on behalf of all Bureau staff to visit you.”
While he was speaking, at the ICU entrance appeared a baby-faced white-haired man.
Seeing there were already two people inside, he did not enter.
Instead, he turned to the empty air behind him and said:
“Got it. That’s the one standing there.”
