“Awake already? I thought Director Sun was still sleeping, so I was even planning to wipe your body too.”

Kong Dalong showed no surprise at all when Sun Desheng suddenly opened his eyes. He smiled faintly, tossed the towel back into the basin, and continued:

“When you were brought in earlier, it was quite a scare. No heartbeat, no pulse—nothing. They even sent you to the morgue and left you there for half the night. In the end, it was your wife and Shen La who came causing a scene and had you moved back out. Strange thing is, after spending half a night in the morgue, your heartbeat and blood pressure suddenly returned. So they brought you here to keep you company with our boy.”

Sun Desheng blinked and glanced at the unconscious Che Qianzi beside him.

“What’s wrong with my brother? Just exhausted?”

“Mm-hm…” Kong Dalong shook his head. “The other Che Qianzi inside him came out again. This time he stayed out too long—his body got drained too badly. He’ll need to rest for a while. Nothing serious though, he’ll recover.”

He added casually, “As for you, Director Sun… when you were sent to the morgue, even your funeral committee showed up. That Director Ren even came to pay respects, said he’d help fulfill your final wishes…”

“That surnamed Ren isn’t done yet…” Sun Desheng rolled his eyes in anger, then asked, “Besides those bastards, how did everyone else react? What about Shen La?”

“Shen La? No need to say anything,” Kong Dalong said with a thumbs-up. “He slapped Director Ren twice right on the spot. You really should make friends like that—he hits whoever stirs trouble and even hits the peacemakers.”

“The Yang secretary tried to mediate and got locked in the morgue instead. Shen La even forced Director Ren to bow to him. If not for Hao Wenming, Mo, and Ximen stepping in, Shen La might’ve kept both of them in there.”

“That’s right,” Sun Desheng smirked. “That’s my brother. Shen La and I have a bond like sharing wives and children.”

Finally hearing something good, he smiled.

“Honestly, if it wasn’t for my father-in-law sending me in here, Shen La would’ve gone all the way with Wu Rendi. Oh right—you mentioned Hao Head earlier. Is he okay? You impersonated him—what about the real one?”

“He’s doing better than fine,” Kong Dalong said, pulling an apple from the bedside drawer. While peeling it, he continued:

“I just drugged him and left him in an office on the fourth floor. Let him rest a bit.”

He finished peeling the apple, sliced the flesh into a plate, then stuffed the almost-empty core straight into Sun Desheng’s mouth.

“Eat some fruit. Clears the heat.”

“If you didn’t mess with me, I wouldn’t have any heat to clear…” Sun Desheng snapped his head away. “Hey, Kong Dalong, you’re crossing the line. I saw a fruit basket downstairs—it said ‘Wishing Director Sun a speedy recovery.’ Are you Director Sun? Why do you get the apple flesh while I get the core?”

Kong Dalong chuckled. “You’re even being picky now. I was just planning to juice it. Our boy needs liquid food anyway. Besides, apple cores are good—like herbal medicine. Very nourishing.”

“That’s not nourishment, that’s punishment,” Sun Desheng muttered helplessly.

Then he asked, “So… how come you’re completely fine? This whole mess started because of you. You’re not just going to walk away clean, are you?”

Kong Dalong stood up with the basin, smiling.

“Why wouldn’t I walk away clean? Hundreds of people came to kill me, and then they all mysteriously died. From any angle, I’m the victim. Now you want to blame me? Where’s the law in that?”

“If anyone wants to deal with me, they should at least bring evidence. Tell me—who would say they came to An Da Building just to kill me?”

He walked out with the basin.

Leaving Sun Desheng alone in bed, smiling bitterly.

But he didn’t intend to pursue the matter further—for Che Qianzi’s sake. Otherwise, even without evidence, he would have found a way to manufacture it.

When Kong Dalong returned with the empty basin, Sun Desheng smiled at him.

“Hey, I’ve got another thing to say. In Room 808, inside the bedding, and that pile at the door—you really worked hard covering up that many corpses. Luckily our boy is still young and doesn’t need that stuff yet.”

“Heh,” Kong Dalong said. “Director Sun, you’re not that young yourself. How do you even know about that herb?”

Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out several sand-like grains.

“These are the real medicinal Plantago seeds—they help with urination. Someone used these to force me into suicide, claiming they had already found Che Qianzi’s whereabouts. Said if I stayed alive, they’d go after him instead. So what choice did I have? I could only kill them to shut them up.”

He placed the grains by Sun Desheng’s pillow.

“Originally I didn’t plan to go this far. I just wanted to kill a few leaders to scare the rest. But that person reminded me—if I don’t cut the weeds at the root, it’ll be bad for our boy Che Qianzi.”

“So there’s nothing more to say. If I run into them again, I’ll send them all down.”

He said it lightly, as if it were nothing.

But Sun Desheng broke into a cold sweat listening.

After a moment, he forced a smile.

“Right… if someone threatened our Xiao Wu like that, I’d kill a few myself too. Speaking of which, those people the Bureau arrested—what are you planning to do with them?”

“Just small fry,” Kong Dalong said. “They were just there to make noise for the big ones. Even if they know something, they won’t dare say it—they’ll just keep it buried.”

Then he smiled again.

“But a few big ones didn’t show up this time. Probably hiding somewhere, waiting to strike again.”

“Our Che Qianzi still needs your care. This kid is stubborn and not very socially skilled. If anything goes wrong, I hope you’ll overlook it for my sake.”

Sun Desheng grinned.

“Hey, you’re talking like an outsider. That’s my brother. I treat him just like Shen La. Except for wife and kids—I’ll give him anything else. No need to be polite.”

Kong Dalong nodded.

“Director Sun, you really warm my heart. I almost want to become sworn brothers with you.”

“Back home, at times like this we’d drink until we’re drunk, pull Shen La in, and kowtow as brothers. Then we’d be brothers on our own terms—not tied to your group.”

He paused, then suddenly asked:

“When did you find out about Che Qianzi’s background?”

The casual chatter suddenly snapped back into sharp focus.

Even Sun Desheng, sharp as he was, paused for a moment.

The two of them stared at each other—an old man and a fat man, both foxes sizing each other up in silence.

At that moment, a woman’s voice came from outside the room:

“Don’t give me any of that nonsense. When our fat guy wakes up, you can tell him yourself…”
