Wu Rendi slowly walked down from the rooftop.
With every step he took, everything within a four-to-five-meter radius instantly turned into drifting smoke. The shadow-like figures panicked and immediately scattered in all directions.
Shen La seized the direction of the fleeing Wraiths and controlled his twin short swords to cut them down as they tried to escape.
Meanwhile, the Yang brothers had recovered somewhat. They firmly blocked the stairwell, eliminating any shadows that tried to rush downward. However, the Wraiths were simply too numerous—dozens still managed to slip past during the brief openings and escape downstairs.
When Sun Desheng first heard Wu Rendi’s voice, his confidence immediately surged.
With Wu Rendi here, everything should have been under control.
But before he could even feel relieved, he saw shadows rushing down from above.
It was unclear whether these Wraiths had been driven into panic or had lost their minds entirely—but instead of fleeing, they charged straight at Sun Desheng and “Hao Wenming.”
Sun Desheng was startled.
Why were they still rushing down even after Wu Rendi had arrived?
Without time to think, he immediately turned his gun.
Bang!
Two Wraiths were pierced in a single shot and dissipated into nothingness.
At the same time, his other hand tightly gripped “Hao Wenming,” afraid he would escape in the chaos.
He had expected the shot to scare the rest off—but instead, the remaining Wraiths seemed to go mad and continued charging forward.
With no choice, Sun Desheng kept firing. Several more Wraiths vanished after being hit, but more kept surging forward.
After six shots, he ran out of bullets.
Helpless, he drew his short sword and swung it to keep the Wraiths at bay while retreating downstairs, still dragging “Hao Wenming” with him.
But after only a few steps, he suddenly realized something.
He turned to “Hao Wenming” and said, “Man… these ghost things are all coming for you, right? This is part of your plan… You knew they’d go out of control, and you also knew I had already seen through your flaw—tch, what flaw… this was all intentional, wasn’t it?”
“Hao Wenming” smiled faintly at him.
“I have to give you credit,” he said. “You little fat guy—no one else could have spotted those flaws except you.”
“Now you’ve got two choices. Either let go of me and run for your life. Or keep holding on and get drained dry together with me. Hurry up—there’s not much time left.”
“Even if I die, I’m dragging you down with me!” Sun Desheng growled.
He suddenly recalled the frustration from the airport incident the day before. Still gripping “Hao Wenming,” he shouted upward:
“Wu Rendi! You can’t even handle a few ghost shadows? Did you learn your skills from your master’s wife?! Don’t tell me your master doesn’t even know—hey, they weren’t wrong! If you want to learn real skills, you’ve got to follow your master’s wife!”
Before he could finish—
Wu Rendi, standing upstairs, laughed in fury.
“You’re asking for it.”
As the final word left his mouth, he stomped his foot.
The moment his foot hit the ground, all the Wraiths vanished without a trace—no smoke, no ashes, nothing.
After clearing everything, Wu Rendi walked toward the stairwell.
At the entrance, he saw Che Qianzi lying unconscious.
The white-haired man glanced at him and said coldly:
“Such a waste… Shen La is at least a blade of chives. You? At best, bean sprouts.”
He ignored the unconscious Che Qianzi and the Yang brothers, then slowly descended the stairs.
When he reached Sun Desheng, he smiled faintly.
“What were you saying earlier? Say it again in front of me.”
Sun Desheng immediately turned to “Hao Wenming” and said, “Sir, our Director Wu is asking you something. Be honest.”
At that moment, “Hao Wenming” rubbed his face.
His appearance shifted—revealing Kong Dalong.
He ignored Sun Desheng entirely and instead studied Wu Rendi carefully.
Finally, he muttered to himself, “So this is the famous Director Wu… I’ve only seen your photos before. I’ve long wanted to pay a visit, but I never dared.”
“What do you mean you didn’t dare?” Sun Desheng cut in. “You were bold enough just now—why not dare meet Director Wu?”
He then smiled ingratiatingly at Wu Rendi. “Director Wu, give me some face. We’re all on the same side here. Kong Dalong even came back from overseas…”
Wu Rendi’s gaze remained fixed on Kong Dalong.
“So you’re the one who made this fat guy’s life miserable?” he said lightly. “I thought only Gao Liang had that ability back in the day. Try harder next time—kill him.”
Kong Dalong laughed.
“I don’t have that kind of ability. I just got lucky. Besides, I also want to make peace with Director Sun. If I don’t, I might be the one who gets killed instead.”
“Then I’ll have to do it myself,” Wu Rendi said. “How should I explain this to Shao Yiyi and Xiao Wu?”
He looked at Sun Desheng with a faint smile.
“Let’s do this. We’ll say you were killed by Kong Dalong during the mission. Then I’ll kill him afterward—consider it revenge for you. After that, Shao Yiyi can observe your mourning period, then quickly remarry… Shen La’s also been single for years…”
Even knowing he was being deliberately intimidated, Sun Desheng still broke into a cold sweat.
Just as he was about to say something to defuse the situation, Wu Rendi added casually:
“That sounds like a good plan.”
Sun Desheng’s vision went black.
And he knew nothing more.
When he opened his eyes again, he was lying in an ICU hospital room.
Tubes were inserted all over his body, and various machines were monitoring his condition.
Something’s not right…
This should’ve been Che Qianzi’s script—how did it become mine?
Fortunately, he could still move slightly. He quickly looked around and saw another hospital bed nearby.
Lying there was none other than his “brother,” Che Qianzi.
Sun Desheng let out a bitter smile.
Still alive… good. Looks like the father-in-law didn’t really go all the way.
Just as he was lost in thought, the door opened.
An old man—Kong Dalong—walked in carrying a washbasin.
He didn’t notice Sun Desheng had woken up and went straight to Che Qianzi’s bed.
Dipping a towel in warm water, he gently wiped Che Qianzi’s face while muttering:
“My dear boy… don’t let that Che Qianzi come out again. Every time he appears, your body gets weaker… Just a little longer. Hold on a bit more. Soon I’ll merge the two of you into one…”
After wiping his face, he rinsed the towel and began cleaning Che Qianzi’s body, continuing:
“Oh right, my boy, I saw Wu Rendi. He completely forgot he ever met this old man. I didn’t bring it up either. Immortality is really something… after so many years, he hasn’t changed at all.”
“I originally wanted to include him in the plan, but thinking about it, I decided not to. After all, you’re in the Bureau now…”
Sun Desheng lay still, listening carefully, trying to catch any useful information.
Soon, Kong Dalong finished cleaning Che Qianzi and walked toward Sun Desheng’s bed.
Seeing this, Sun Desheng quickly closed his eyes, pretending to still be unconscious.
He heard water being wrung out.
Then a warm towel touched his face.
Suddenly, Sun Desheng opened his eyes and shouted:
“Old man, you used the same towel you just wiped your ‘dear boy’ with to wipe my face?!”
