What shocked Hao Zhengyi even more was that Ren Rong was actually at the very front of the charge.
This new director somehow got hold of a standard-issue Municipal Investigation Bureau handgun and, disregarding his own safety, fired four to five shots at the enemy.
His marksmanship was exceptionally accurate—within moments, three or four opponents had already fallen. Across the entire Bureau, only Shen La could match his shooting skills.
But being the first to show himself was also dangerous.
On the opposite side, a bearded man saw Ren Rong injuring several of their people and immediately pulled out a fire talisman. With a flick of his wrist, the talisman flew straight toward Ren Rong.
Seeing a black shadow rushing toward him, Ren Rong instinctively fired.
The bullet struck the talisman perfectly.
With a massive explosion, the fire talisman detonated on impact. The shockwave sent Ren Rong and three or four investigators flying backward.
But it didn’t end there.
After exploding, the talisman transformed into dozens of fireballs that shot toward the Municipal Investigation Bureau’s people.
Several investigators—including Ren Rong—were struck instantly. Their bodies erupted in flames.
Fortunately, it was ordinary fire. With help from nearby colleagues, they quickly stripped off the burning clothing and retreated to the rear for treatment.
Taking advantage of the Bureau’s brief chaos, the blacklisted group launched another technique.
A thin-mustached man poured a specially prepared liquid onto several already-dead bodies. As he chanted, the corpses stiffened—and slowly stood up.
Then, swaying unnaturally, they charged toward the investigators.
The Bureau’s side immediately opened fire.
Bullets struck the corpses, but had no effect.
These specially modified bullets were supposed to dispel evil and break sorcery—but for some reason, they failed completely.
The corpses used their bodies as shields and continued advancing.
Seeing the situation worsen, Hao Zhengyi decisively pulled out his revolver and shot the corpse-controller first, dropping him instantly. He then shot down several others at the front.
Seeing this, the investigators immediately followed up with concentrated fire, taking down four or five more enemies.
Although Hao Zhengyi was alone, he managed to hold down most of the enemy’s firepower.
After firing, he quickly rolled behind the stairs for cover. Reloading on the move, he continued firing at the blacklisted group.
Just as the situation began to tip in favor of a pincer attack, a woman suddenly leapt down from the third floor.
Her target was Hao Zhengyi.
She landed on the upper landing of the stairs and threw a longsword at him.
Once released, the sword moved like a living serpent, twisting through the air as it shot toward him.
Hao Zhengyi quickly drew his serpent-shaped dagger to block.
When the weapons collided, a sound like a bronze bell rang out.
The impact shook him so violently that he coughed up blood, and the dagger flew out of his hand, clattering to the ground.
At the same time, another man followed the same route down from the upper stairs.
He was in his thirties, slightly below average height, and unnaturally pale—so pale he looked almost like the white-haired investigators of the Bureau. Though male, his entire presence radiated a cold, yin-like aura.
Upon seeing him, the faces of the Municipal Investigation Bureau directors all darkened.
Under Ouyang Pianzuo’s signal, they raised their hands, stopping their subordinates—temporarily halting the battle.
Standing calmly behind the blacklisted group, the pale man ignored the heavily injured Hao Zhengyi and said coldly:
“I told you to guard this place while we went to find Kong Dalong. Is this how you were guarding it? If I had come down one minute later, you’d all be dead.”
At that moment, Ren Rong—who had just finished bandaging himself—saw an opening and immediately raised his gun, firing at the newcomer’s head.
But it was too late to stop him.
Bang!
The shot rang out.
Just as everyone thought the man would be killed, he raised a finger and lightly tapped in front of his forehead.
The bullet struck his fingertip—and was flicked right back along its original path.
It hit Ren Rong in the shoulder.
“Don’t move!” Ouyang Pianzuo shouted urgently as the investigators raised their guns.
He quickly stopped everyone, then turned to the pale man:
“Mr. Bi… long time no see. Listen to me, you’re not one of them. Don’t get involved in this mess.”
The man’s name was Bi Yan.
Unlike the others, he was not on the blacklist. In fact, he was far stronger than most of them.
He had previously helped the Bureau handle several cases and even had a decent relationship with Yang Xiao. When the blacklist restricting entry to the capital was originally set up, it was Yang Xiao who spoke on his behalf, allowing him to be exempted.
So he had always maintained a relatively friendly relationship with the Bureau.
Which made his involvement here all the more confusing.
Bi Yan glanced at Ouyang Pianzuo and said:
“Director Ouyang, for Yang Xiao’s sake, I won’t pursue the man who just fired at me. But I suggest you withdraw from this building for two hours. After two hours, we’ll leave. The building will be returned to you. Any damage—we’ll pay whatever compensation you name. As for those who died at your hands… I’ll settle it. Let them be dead. No one will trouble the Bureau again.”
“Bi Yan, don’t push it!” Xiong Wanyi forced himself up despite his injuries.
“Our Sixth Division reinforcements are on the way! At this point, you think you can still leave? Do you really think Yang Xiao can still protect you after this?”
“Annoying.”
Bi Yan didn’t even look at him. He spat a thick glob of saliva.
It shot forward like a bullet.
It pierced straight through Xiong Wanyi’s chest.
As he fell into a pool of blood, Bi Yan showed a trace of regret.
“You all saw it. He disrespected me.”
Then he added casually:
“By the way, didn’t you know? Around noon, your Director Sun Desheng already took all the white-haired members of Division Six and left the city. They took the highway south. By now, they should already be—”
“Enough nonsense!”
The woman who had injured Hao Zhengyi earlier descended the stairs.
Hao Zhengyi was already unconscious at this point.
Seeing her arrive, Bi Yan immediately changed his expression, becoming almost gentle.
“Why did you come down? You should rest… I can handle this. Don’t strain yourself—you might harm the child…”
“I’m not getting anxious because of you—I’m anxious because we still haven’t found Kong Dalong.”
She glared at him and then turned to the others behind them:
“This place is under our control now. Go find Kong Dalong’s whereabouts. Ask Zhu Nan—he might be the only one who knows where he is. What are you waiting for? Move!”
The blacklisted group immediately reacted and rushed toward the stairs.
The Municipal Investigation Bureau tried to open fire, but Bi Yan and the woman blocked them completely.
Without orders from the directors, no one dared shoot.
At that moment, several more figures slipped into the building—but because both sides were focused on each other, no one noticed.
Xiong Wanyi couldn’t hold back any longer.
“Open fire! He’s alone—see how many bullets he can block! Anyone who tries to go upstairs—shoot them down!”
Before Bi Yan could react, someone suddenly shouted from behind the Bureau investigators:
“This is insane… this is way too realistic… why the hell is your filming location the same as mine?”
