From the opposite side, one of the men suddenly raised his hand and threw a flying knife.

As it reached the three of them, the blade suddenly split into countless identical knives, scattering like a rain of blossoms toward Hao Wenming and the others.

Fortunately, Xiao Yifeng reacted fast enough. He fired both Scorpion submachine guns at once. A burst of gunfire rang out, and the flying knives were all shot down, clattering to the ground.

After clearly seeing the owner of the flying knives, Hao Wenming cursed:

“Shen Kui, have you lost your mind? You dare attack us? Last time at Juelong Ridge, I let you off the hook!”

The man on the opposite side replied:

“Director Hao, I’m sorry. Today, whoever tries to rescue Kong Dalong will die. For old times’ sake, hand him over and I’ll owe you a favor. In the future, we can still—”

Before he could finish, someone beside him interrupted:

“Shen Kui, shut up. Why are you talking so much? Trying to tip them off? Or are you involved in what just happened too?”

“Fuck you, Lan Weiyan! Are you blind? Didn’t you see me kill people just now?”

Shen Kui roared in fury, turning on his own ally.

“Zhu Nan was right. There’s a traitor among us helping Kong Dalong. I think it’s you!”

As he spoke, Shen Kui suddenly opened his mouth and spat a flying knife straight at Lan Weiyan.

At such close range, there was no way to dodge.

The blade pierced his throat, and Lan Weiyan fell to the ground, struggling briefly before going still.

“Shen Kui, have you gone insane?! You’re killing your own allies—you’ll be cursed for this!”

Seeing this, the others immediately retreated back into the rooms and slammed the doors shut.

From inside, someone shouted:

“Ever since you came in, you’ve been killing indiscriminately. You’re clearly Kong Dalong’s spy planted among us!”

“Bullshit! I only killed those you all agreed to! If you didn’t suspect anything, why would I act? You’ve been using me as a pawn all along—and now you want to silence me? I get it now—you’re the real insiders Kong Dalong planted!”

Shen Kui had completely lost control. Ignoring all warnings, he conjured another flying knife in both hands and hurled it toward the door.

At the same moment, a red flash appeared through the door crack.

A fireball shot directly through the door and slammed into Shen Kui’s group.

They had no time to dodge.

Instantly, they were engulfed in flames. In just four to five seconds, they were burned into charcoal.

But the people inside the room did not fare any better.

The flying knife Shen Kui had thrown shattered the door, burst inside, and split into countless blades that rained in all directions. Everyone inside was unable to escape and was cut down instantly.

In the blink of an eye, both groups annihilated each other in utter chaos.

The Hao brothers and Xiao Yifeng outside were completely stunned.

They had seen internal conflict before—but never anything like this. This wasn’t infighting; it was closer to enemies of a blood feud.

Xiao Yifeng exhaled and said:

“Do you think this is Director Sun’s doing? Even though he’s not even with the Bureau anymore, he’s still manipulating things like this… incredible.”

“If he had that kind of ability, the Bureau wouldn’t have been able to keep him,” Hao Wenming replied, still dazed. “He’d already been transferred to some higher place. But whoever is behind this… their mind is no less sharp than Fatty Sun’s.”

After a pause, he added:

“Big brother, what do you think?”

“Didn’t you hear them both mentioning Kong Dalong?” Hao Zhengyi said as he stepped out from behind the door, moving cautiously forward. “The key might be this Kong guy. Second brother, do you remember anyone named Kong Dalong?”

“Kong Dalong… sounds like someone without much ability,” Hao Wenming said while following behind. “Too bad Fatty Sun isn’t here. He’d probably know who this is. Xiao Xiao, do you know him?”

Xiao Yifeng hesitated, then replied:

“When Che Qianzi first joined the Bureau, Director Sun had our Fifth Division investigate his background. I don’t remember all the details clearly, but one name stood out. Kong Dalong is Che Qianzi’s master. Some even say Kong Dalong is his father…”

At that, both Hao brothers stopped and turned back to look at him, shocked.

They never expected Kong Dalong to be connected to Che Qianzi.

But if that was true, then Director Sun’s unusual attention toward the boy suddenly made sense.

At that moment, Hao Wenming’s communicator crackled to life.

Ren Rong’s voice came through:

“Directors Hao! Are you alright? We heard gunfire… are you safe? Do you need backup?”

It had already been two or three minutes since the shooting, and only now he was asking. Truly, like offering milk after the child has died.

Hao Wenming glanced helplessly at his elder brother, about to respond—when suddenly another voice came through the radio:

“Director Ren! Come up quickly… we’ve been ambushed! Deputy Director Xiao Yifeng is dead, and our chief is seriously injured! Hurry! Take the elevator—those evil cultivators are everywhere outside!”

The voice was identical to Hao Wenming’s.

The tone, pitch, and cadence were all perfectly mimicked.

The Hao brothers and Xiao Yifeng were all shocked.

Hao Wenming immediately shouted into the communicator:

“Trap! Ren Rong, this is a trap! That voice isn’t me—did you hear that?! Respond!”

But there was no reply.

Instead, Ren Rong’s voice came back again:

“Understood! Hold on, Directors Hao—we’re coming up immediately! Director Xiong, organize everyone and rush in! No matter the cost, we must rescue the Hao brothers! I’m coming too!”

Even though the signal was supposedly blocked, they could still hear voices.

The three men on the eighth floor quickly pulled out their communication devices—but all of them found the same situation: no signal for outgoing transmission, only incoming audio.

“Kong Dalong has already calculated everything…” Hao Zhengyi said coldly. “Director Xiao, take the elevator down immediately. Don’t let them come up.”

But before he finished, both elevators on the eighth floor suddenly began to plummet.

A loud crash echoed from the first floor.

Someone had already anticipated their move—and destroyed the elevators in advance.

At the same time, gunfire erupted from below.

The three of them immediately rushed toward the stairwell, shouting as they ran:

“Don’t come up! It’s a trap!”

But the gunfire downstairs was too intense—no one could hear them.

They entered the stairwell and immediately saw dozens of formations densely arranged across the steps, clearly meant to block descent.

Fortunately, Hao Zhengyi had prepared for this.

He pulled a thin steel cable from his sleeve, tied one end to the stair railing, and leapt downward.

Using the cable for support, he dropped along the side of the stairwell and soon reached the second floor.

Below, the Municipal Investigation Bureau investigators were already engaged in fierce combat with dozens of blacklisted fighters.

Both sides had suffered casualties. The Bureau investigators wore inner protective armor, so although injured, they were not in immediate mortal danger. The opponents, however, were forced to fight under heavy gunfire the moment they revealed themselves to cast spells—and were being steadily cut down in the exchange.
