Bureau of Paranormal Investigation: The Final Chapter 5 min read 120 of 176 1

Seeing that his elder brother insisted on taking the elevator, Hao Wenming refused to stay behind no matter what. The two brothers shared an extremely deep bond, and the moment he saw his brother preparing to take the risk alone, he immediately followed him into the elevator without hesitation.

Just as the elevator doors were about to close, Xiao Yifeng slipped inside.

The Hao brothers were slightly surprised by Xiao Yifeng’s decision to join them. The Fifth Division was usually responsible for logistics and support, yet this deputy director had recently become unusually prominent—he almost looked like someone from the Second Division instead.

Hao Wenming pressed the button for the eighth floor. There was no time for further discussion.

The three of them drew their weapons.

Hao Wenming held a pistol in one hand and the Municipal Investigation Bureau’s standard-issue expandable baton in the other. His elder brother, Hao Zhengyi, carried a serpent-shaped dagger and also had a revolver on him, though he had not drawn it yet since the situation on the eighth floor was unknown.

Xiao Yifeng’s equipment, however, was a bit excessive—he actually pulled out two Scorpion submachine guns from under his coat.

Noticing the looks from the two Hao directors, Xiao Yifeng gave an awkward laugh.

“I modified these myself. Thought I’d test them this time. When we get back, I’ll talk to Director Ouyang and see if we can roll them out in the Fourth Division…”

Hao Wenming glanced at the submachine guns with envy.

“Even though your Fifth Division doesn’t handle frontline incidents, you sure have good stuff. When you get back, maybe you can tinker with some rocket launchers too. I’ll be waiting for those in the First Division…”

Before he could finish, the elevator reached the eighth floor.

With a soft ding, the doors slowly opened.

The three of them immediately raised their weapons toward the outside—but nothing unusual was visible.

There was no time to test for formations using the withered herb smoke. Hao Zhengyi used the simplest method instead.

He bit his tongue and spat a mouthful of blood directly outside the elevator.

Still, nothing happened.

Seeing this, Xiao Yifeng was the first to rush out. He stepped onto the floor where the blood had splattered, holding a Scorpion in each hand, aiming left and right. Only then did they realize the entire corridor of the eighth floor was completely empty.

“Room 808…”

Hao Wenming also stepped out, staying close to Xiao Yifeng. He gave space to his elder brother and continued:

“Let’s go see what exactly made those people risk offending the entire Municipal Investigation Bureau to rush in here…”

As he spoke, Hao Zhengyi also came out.

He grabbed Xiao Yifeng, who was about to head toward Room 808, and said:

“It’s been this long. Whatever was in 808 is probably already gone. And it’s too quiet here…”

While speaking, he switched the dagger to his left hand and reached into his coat, pulling out a small porcelain bottle.

The moment Hao Wenming saw it, he instinctively stepped back.

“Isn’t that Old Yang’s corpse oil? Big brother, did you steal that from Yang Xiao?”

“Why would I need to steal it? Why wouldn’t Yang Xiao give it to me? This is a newly improved formula of his.”

Hao Zhengyi glanced at his younger brother strangely, then held his breath and slowly removed the stopper.

The instant the bottle opened, an indescribably foul stench flooded the entire eighth-floor corridor.

Xiao Yifeng could not stand it at all—he immediately squatted down and began retching violently.

Hao Wenming, already familiar with the smell, held his breath and barely managed to stay upright.

Then, from all the rooms on the eighth floor, faint human-shaped shadows began drifting out through the doors.

They slowly floated toward the three of them, as if preparing to surround them.

Just as they were about to close in, Hao Zhengyi quickly resealed the bottle.

The shadows suddenly lost their target. After lingering in place for a moment, they drifted back into their respective rooms.

Seeing this, Hao Zhengyi glanced at his brother and said:

“This is more troublesome than I expected. I didn’t think so many people would die…”

He stepped forward, carefully avoiding the blood he had spat earlier, and pushed open Room 803.

Inside, four to five corpses lay scattered in all directions.

From the scene, it was clear they had killed each other.

What exactly had happened to drive them into mutual slaughter?

Hao Zhengyi then opened the remaining rooms one by one. Without exception—each room contained corpses. Larger rooms held more bodies; smaller ones still contained at least one or two. In short, not a single room was empty.

The three of them exchanged glances.

What exactly was going on here?

Finally, Hao Zhengyi pushed open Room 808.

The moment the door opened, a pile of corpses that had been blocking the entrance immediately tumbled out.

A glance revealed more than twenty bodies piled at the doorway.

Inside the room, the wall separating it from Room 809 had almost completely collapsed.

“Ge Zhongluo, Yu Meiren, and the two members of the He family—they’re all in here…”

As he spoke, Hao Zhengyi pointed at four corpses lying side by side inside the room. They were the first group who had entered earlier.

“I understand now. Room 808 was bait. It was used to lure these people in.”

He turned to his younger brother.

“But who caused all this?”

Without another word, he stepped over the corpses and entered the room alone. Only then did he notice a hole in the ceiling above.

Room 808 had clearly been thoroughly searched already. He intended to look for any remaining clues.

Hao Wenming and Xiao Yifeng followed him in.

After circling the room, they found nothing.

Just as they were about to leave Room 808, the doors to Rooms 810 and 811 at the far end suddenly opened.

Several strange-looking figures stepped out.

Both sides locked eyes.

When those people saw the three of them emerging from Room 808, they suddenly seemed to “understand” something. Under the command of their leaders, they charged forward.

“They rescued that person! Charge! We must finish them off!”

Seeing them rush in, Xiao Yifeng showed no hesitation and opened fire with his submachine guns, sending a burst of bullets toward the ceiling.

The gunshots echoed through the corridor, and the attackers quickly took cover.

One of the leaders shouted:

“It’s the Municipal Investigation Bureau! Don’t let them escape!”
