Although Sun Desheng didn’t have the key to Yang Shujie’s office, he still managed to find a wire and quickly picked the lock. Then he walked in with Che Qianzi and the three white-haired men.

Yang Shujie’s office was the same size as the bureau chief’s office. Behind it stood a full wall of bookshelves, filled with over a hundred books of various types, along with several trophies he had earned during his school years.

“Come in, sit down. Make yourselves at home,” Sun Desheng said casually as soon as he entered.

He immediately opened Yang Shujie’s desk drawer and found a jar of tea leaves inside. After smelling it, he said, “Pre-rain Longjing. Nothing special. Just drink it.”

He tossed the tea to Shen La, then turned to the bookshelf and started rummaging through it.

Yang Jun couldn’t help but say, “Desheng, you should tone it down a bit. Look at this office—an entire wall of books. Then look at your own place, all flashy and extravagant. You should learn some of this low-profile style.”

Before he finished speaking, Sun Desheng pulled out a thick book. When he opened it, there was a rectangular cut-out inside filled with cash—ten thousand yuan.

“Big Yang, what exactly do you want me to learn?” Sun Desheng laughed. “That there’s gold in books?”

He casually put the money back and continued searching through the shelves. Several thick books all contained hidden stacks of cash. After counting, it came to around two hundred thousand yuan.

Looking at the cash on the desk, he said with a smile, “Director Yang really doesn’t have it easy. Unlike you guys, he can’t make side money. Old Ma tried to use connections with him many times, but he refused every time. This is probably all his private savings. Honestly, it’s less than what Big Yang makes on a single side job.”

Che Qianzi looked at the cash and asked, “He just keeps his private money like this? Why not deposit it in a bank?”

Sun Desheng chuckled. “You don’t understand. Director Yang is going through a divorce. I heard they even fought with kitchen knives.”

As he spoke, he stuffed the cash back into the books and suddenly turned to the Yang brothers.

“By the way, I should ask—has the new guy already met you two?”

He waved his hand. “Relax, I’m just guessing. If he wants to take over the bureau, he’d naturally need to prepare in advance. The core of the Special Investigation Bureau isn’t the five divisions—it’s you Sixth Division.”

The expressions of the Yang brothers stiffened slightly.

They exchanged a glance.

Yang Xiao finally said, “Yes. Today when you were in Tianjin, Director Ren personally invited us to meet him. But he didn’t mention taking over your position. He only said there might be personnel changes in the bureau soon, and told us not to worry—no matter what changes happen, our treatment would remain the same, and we could still take private cases. We were planning to talk to you tonight, but we didn’t expect him to move so fast—he takes office tomorrow morning.”

Yang Jun added, “I can confirm what Yang Xiao said. He didn’t say a single word about replacing you. He also knows everything about us and even promised me a house near Nanjing, plus helping Yang Xiao’s wife arrange schooling. He also asked us to pass a message to Director Wu to meet him. But Desheng, no matter how good the conditions are, it doesn’t matter—we’ve been through life-and-death situations with you.”

Sun Desheng thought to himself: Life-and-death situations? And yet you still followed someone else behind my back.

But his expression didn’t change. He just chuckled.

“I thought he’d offered some golden mountain or silver mountain. Turns out it’s the same old tricks.”

Just then, his phone rang again.

It was his contact from above, Old Zheng.

After answering, Sun Desheng laughed lazily, “What’s up, Old Zheng? This late… yeah, I just heard from Director Yang. It’s fine, I already resigned anyway… what? The ministry just finished a meeting? You want Director Yang to retire and me to take over his position? Don’t joke around… I’ve already reorganized myself. I’m starting an entertainment company now—‘Lingyun Temple Film & Culture Co.’ I’m going into the entertainment industry, not this anymore… the minister wants to personally talk to me? Which minister? I’m now under the Ministry of Culture.”

After hanging up, he checked the time—past 3 a.m.

The white-haired men were fine, but Che Qianzi had already curled up on the sofa and fallen asleep.

Sun Desheng quietly took Director Yang’s coat and covered him with it, then said to the others:

“I’m just a mortal body. I can’t stay up all night. I’ll nap for a bit. When morning comes, we’ll welcome your new leader.”

Then he lay down in the boss chair and immediately fell asleep.

Seeing him like this, the three white-haired men exchanged glances. Shen La gave a wry smile.

“It looks like Desheng already has a plan. We’ll see what he does tomorrow.”

Time passed—no one knew how long.

The first to wake was Che Qianzi. He rolled off the sofa and hit the floor.

Groggy, he looked around and finally realized he was in Yang Shujie’s office. Sun Desheng was still asleep on the chair.

He blinked.

Where are Shen La and the Yang brothers?

Just then, Sun Desheng’s phone rang loudly.

He jolted awake.

After answering, still half-asleep, he said, “La Zi… what—already nine o’clock?”

After hanging up, he quickly washed his face with tea and rinsed his mouth, then said to Che Qianzi:

“Brother, have I ever told you about the under-14 protection law? I know you’re seventeen or eighteen—it’s just changing your birthday, one sentence.”

Five minutes later, almost everyone in the Special Investigation Bureau had gathered in the large conference room.

Only Director Wu had not arrived.

All personnel had been urgently summoned, but no one knew the reason. Many assumed another major incident had occurred.

Soon after, several high-ranking officials from the ministry entered, along with Director Yang in a wheelchair and an unfamiliar middle-aged man.

The room fell silent.

With a gesture from the officials, Director Yang was pushed to the podium. He smiled awkwardly.

“Today, we have an important announcement. The position of bureau chief has been vacant for over two years. After careful consideration by the ministry, the new acting—”

Before he could finish, Sun Desheng walked into the conference room with Che Qianzi.

He smiled brightly.

“Sorry I’m late.”
